This Thanksgiving, if youāve ever once in your life claimed Indian heritage, give a couple bucks to NICWA. Im not here to argue with you about whether or not you have NDN heritage, but if you truly do, the reason why you know nothing about it is because of your ancestor being taken away and colonized by the methods the Indian Child Welfare Act protects against. Right now ICWA is under attack by a horrifying court case that threatens to undo all the recent strides weāve made in tribal sovereignty and NDN cultural preservation by eliminating NDN children.
The court case is called Brackeen v. Haaland and is spearheaded by a literal Oil & Gas lawyer named Matthew McGill that has succeeded in destroying the sovereignty of Tribal lands for pipeline construction and has even tried to disestablish entire reservations for his Big Oil paycheck. Their case is a disgusting attack with no legal merit, but still may pass in their favour because of the greed of our Supreme Court. Hereās the most important snippet from that link.
Do not let them trick you into thinking this is to protect NDN children. Child abuse is a widespread US problem and the federal and state governments have never handled it with the best interests of children in mind, let alone NDN children. This is why I am offering up a link to NICWA, a program that ACTUALLY intervenes in cases of child abuse among the NDN community, while allowing the child to remain an established member of the tribal nation. This program is led by tribal leaders who know the communities they are operating in intimately, and therefore can actually act on what is best for the child.
If you are concerned about NDN Child welfare, DO NOT support the striking down of ICWA and instead support public programs on tribal lands and tribal child welfare programs like NICWA.

The same SCOTUS that refered to tribal land as a territory of the state is about to hear a case that might overturn ICWA.
ICWA allows Alaska Natives and Native Americans control over the adoption and foster care placement of Native American and Alaska Children. In practice what this ensures is that if a Native American or Alaska Native child cannot be raised with their parents', the extended family will be given custody. If the extended family cannot care for the child, the child is placed with a family in their tribe or, barring that, with a family who is Native American or Alaska Native.
This act is important for two reasons:
For centuries, Native Americans and Alaska Natives were forcibly assimilated into White culture. From the 1800s to the late 1900s, children were taken from their families and either adopted out to White people or put in boarding schools. If parents refused, they were sometimes incarcerated, and they could lose custody of their other children. There are cases where tribes would hide their children and tell people who came that they had none...so the white people started showing up uannounced. The children sent to these schools were abused. Some were murdered. And survivors still live with the trauma. ICWA was passed to stop this...but not even 50 years after it being passed, it's at risk.
Native Americans and Alaska Natives are constitutionally guaranteed sovereignty. We all know the government picks and chooses when it wants to honor that, but Native Americans and Alaska Natives are supposed to have sovereignty. The idea that one country can step in and tell sovereign tribes and nations that they are not allowed to control the placement of their own children should be absurd. The U.S. doesn't tell Britain what to do with their foster care system...but the SCOTUS knows that Native Americans and Alaska Natives don't have an army or navy like Britain does. Because of this the SCOTUS believes it has the right to violate years of precedent and treaties. It knows that it will be protected no matter what it decides.
So I'm asking people to keep an eye on ICWA. I'm asking them to boost the signal. And I'm asking them to protest if it falls.
On this Indigenous People's Day in USAmerica, support Indigenous ppl by signing the petition to President Biden and the Supreme Court to uphold the ICWA, keeping Native children with their families. Every time one of you godforsaken freaks tells me to 'get out and vote' like its cutely trivial and didn't take months of desperate phone calls just to register (IF my registration even WORKED THIS TIME).
If you, like me, are struggling with registration or poll access, try contacting your STATE board of elections.
Request that they send you TWO copies of their registration guidelines. Collect any documents listed in them.
Then, contact your LOCAL board. Tell them you would like to register IN PERSON IF POSSIBLE.
Bring your documents and the two copies of the guideline AND a working cell phone.
If you get ANY trouble AT ALL tell the local person you will call the state board to confirm their registration requirements. Be polite, but do not leave. Put the phone on speaker.
Most of the time, the local person who is doing Actual Serious Federal And State Crimes will give up at that point. If not, the person at the state board will generally outrank and overrule the local one.
Make a note of the names of both the local and state official.
Then, and this is the most important part:
CONFIRM YOUR REGISTRATION WAS FILED.
