I think it's very important we never *see* anybody abstract in the whole series. We always follow the other characters as they *find* someone who's already abstracted off-screen. The closest we get is Jax nearly abstracting in her bedroom but notably that instance is interrupted when Pomni knocks on her door.

Abstraction always happens in solitude. It happens when someone is isolated and beyond hope, and then one day, you check on them, only to find they're already gone. The thing that remains isn't them anymore.

The suicide metaphor is... pretty apparent when you realize that.

Nikki had no friends and was truly on her own. Ian, who was sleeping with her, saw that she was mentally disturbed yet chose to distance himself to avoid tarnishing his reputation. He continued communicating with Bear, checking up on him despite seeing that Nikki was unwell. Even after Ian witnessed Nikki smash her face with a bottle, Ian still allowed Bear to take her home instead of taking her to the hospital. When Bear came to him with the one-wish willow, Ian worried more that Bear knew he had slept with Nikki than that Bear was covered in blood and behaved erratically.

Sarah believed Nikki dated Bear purely to hurt her and saw Bear as a victim because she had a crush on him. Like Ian, she kept checking up on Bear but ignored Nikki, distancing herself from her. Hours after the party, Sarah texted Bear to meet her. When they met, she told him about Ian and Nikki’s sexual relationship and then flirted with him in hopes of getting together. Bear enjoyed the attention Sarah lavished on him, but he didn’t truly care about her, because if he had, he wouldn’t have sat back and watched Nikki smash her head in. Honestly, he shouldn't have met up with her to begin with.

Bear took away Nikki’s autonomy, treating her as an object for him to use as he pleased. However, as soon as his fantasy started going awry, he at first tried to change his wish while keeping Nikki under his control. Even when she begged him for death, Bear denied her and played victim, treating her like she was the issue. After Sarah's death, he asked Ian to cancel his wish, even telling him he could have Nikki, reinforcing once again that he doesn't see her as a person. In the end, Bear committed suicide, leaving Nikki to suffer the consequences of his actions, Ian's and Sarah's deaths.

Nikki began the movie alone, and she ended it alone with nothing but trauma and the consequences of actions beyond her control.
