Racist Stereotypes About Magic
Someone asked me today whether it helps to replace the racist terms “white magic” and “black magic” with “positive magic” and “negative magic.” While that’s a lovely idea, unfortunately, it doesn’t entirely fix the underlying problem…
The notion of “good” and “bad” magic does, in fact, go beyond the terms “light” and ”dark” or “white” and “black.” If you replace the words with “positive/negative” and then refer to “death magic, graveyard dirt, curses, and animal sacrifice” as “negative” then you’re literally calling lots of Africana traditions and other practices or religions “negative.” That’s part of why they were called “dark” in the first place.
Let’s break down some of these stereotypes of “bad magic” one by one:
Ancestors are really foundational to African religions and to the magical practices and diasporic religions that developed from them. Working with ancestors is technically “death magic” since you’re working with the spirits of your family who have passed away. But really there’s nothing evil or wrong with that, it’s lovely! Gathering graveyard dirt is a way of connecting with ancestral spirits because in many African religions, the earth and one’s ancestors are interconnected. Goofer dirt/graveyard dirt is a part of that spiritual and material interconnection. These sorts of practices are often labeled “evil” and “creepy” when removed from the sophisticated and rich spirituality of their actual cultural contexts then misunderstood.
These negative stereotypes even apply to cursing and animal sacrifice. Many think “it’s a given that those things are wrong or unethical,” which comes from an uninformed Eurocentric set of assumptions. I personally don’t curse, but I am curse-positive because I support anyone’s right to choose to curse. Curses, jinxes, hexes, and crossing magic are a big part of the hoodoo tradition because it’s a tradition developed by black people during slavery, many of whom used magic for self-defense against their slave masters and oppressors. For black people, fighting this oppression with magic has been a way of regaining agency in a world of slavery, segregation, and systematic racism for centuries. When people just label “cursing” as “bad,” it completely ignores the context from which that developed and still exists for rootworkers and the magical traditions of marginalized groups all around the world as well.
Finally, with animal sacrifice, that’s been a part of many African religions for a long time and is still a part of how many practitioners of diasporic Africana religions (including myself) make offerings to their deities. It’s not just slaughtering animals in a careless way and then disposing of their bodies as waste… At least within the Ifá tradition, I know that the animals are treated ethically with great care and appreciation. They are killed because their ashe (energy) and spirits return to Olorun to send your message and the ashe to the orishas, where they will rest in peace afterwards. They are killed in an ethical manner similar to halal/kosher slaughter (as quick and painless as possible) and deeply appreciated and blessed by all involved. Typically, they are eaten afterwards as shared communion with the orishas or put into the wilderness to return to the cycle of life and be eaten by animals. They aren’t wasted or forgotten. They are treated far better than most animals that are eaten at a dinner table every day, many of whom are horrifically butchered and taken for granted. (I’m a vegetarian btw!)
So as for replacing “white/black” terminology with “positive/negative” to refer to magical traditions and practices, I think it all depends on what you’re calling “negative” because if it’s based on popular stereotypes of what’s “bad,” it’s still going to end up perpetuating racist stereotypes.
What’s the alternative? Personally, I refer to specific practices that I would or would not do myself rather than lumping them all into one group and putting a judgment on it. In other words, I don’t talk about the notion of “bad” or “negative” magic at all. For instance, if you don’t like working with the spirits of the deceased, you could just say “personally I don’t practice that” instead of labeling it “bad” as a blanket judgment on other people’s practices without knowing the context.
My magic is my business, your magic is your business, but it’s everybody’s business to put an end to racist stereotypes in the way we conceptualize and talk about magical practices and traditions.
If you or someone you know is a Voodoo practitioner in the LA area, please contact me.
I have an oldish black rattle. It was formerly used in Voodoo practices and had a curse on it (which HAS been taken off successfully) and has been uncursed but needs a place to go.
I will only give it away to a responsible and intermediately experienced practitioner.
Message me for more information.
Thank you~
Reaching out to anyone in the Voodoo community
A few months ago I found a black rattle out in Barbosa Park sitting by itself, I sensed something very dark on it and picked it up and immediately put it in my Tibetan blessing book bag for safe keeping and kept it in darkness for that span of time until last night. I had a friend who is good with sigils take a look at it and she told me it had a Voodoo curse on it, that the magic used was somewhat old (18th Century Voodoo), and the curse was relatively weak. We took the curse off successfully and the item is now sitting in the same bag in darkness and our plan is to keep it like that for a few days so it can rest, and check up on it after and see if the curse lingered at all. When the item is ready I plan to give it away to a responsible Voodoo practitioner because I was told it will only accept Voodoo practices, and I am not a Voodoo practitioner nor am I a follower of the religion.
If anyone is interested please message me here, or on my main account in my description for a faster response.
Please only contact me about this item if you have extensive knowledge in Voodoo practices and plan to use it responsibly.
I will show you a picture of the item and give a more in depth description of it's history when contacted. I don't think I will require compensation of currency unless it has to be shipped.
If you also have any advice, as I've mentioned before I know nothing about Voodoo but want to be as respectful as possible, for me as how to take better care of the item PLEASE let me know.
Thank you ~
Energy Work: Introduction to Fields Exercise
I want to start sharing more of my energy practice, here, and felt the best way to start doing that was to post an “introductory primer”. This meditation is designed to familiarize you with energy and its tactile properties. You can get some use out of this exercise regardless of your experience level (I still practice it, today), and it’s a great entry point for someone who’s never even dabbled before. All you’ll need to enjoy it is a comfortable, quiet place where you’re unlikely to be disturbed for roughly 30 minutes.
Tip: Don’t try to follow along with this text as you perform the exercise. Instead, read it in its entirety before you begin. This way, you can avoid the distraction of scrolling or flipping pages during your meditation. That will kill your focus dead.
Step 1:
To begin, sit or stand in a comfortable position. Shake yourself out, paying particular attention to your shoulders and wrists. Do this until you feel loose and relaxed. Now, take a deep breath in, filling your lungs to the largest capacity possible. Hold the breath for a count to three, then exhale slowly, through your mouth. Concentrate on your breathing for as long as necessary to make it deep, slow and even. As you inhale, focus on the weight in the middle of your chest. Feel all the tension leave your body as you exhale. Draw your focus inwards, and feel your pulse as it travels through your body. Be still, quiet, and whole. Remain here until you are grounded and focused.
Step 2:
When you feel relaxed and grounded, raise your arms so that your elbows are up and away from your body. With your hands open, turn them so that your palms are facing each other in front of you. The palms of your hands should be roughly one foot apart, and one foot away from the core of your body.Feel your focus slowly travel from your chest, to your shoulders, and down through your arms. Sweep it down past your elbows and wrists until you are focusing on the palms of your hands. You may notice a tingling sensation, or a hyper awareness, in your fingers. Push this feeling out until you are focused on the space between your palms. The keyword is ‘push’. Feel a pressure building up between your hands; focus until that pressure is a dense weight.
Step 3:
With your attention still on the space between your palms, physically push them together. You should feel a slight resistance, or “bounce”. Bring your hands together and back apart rhythmically, getting a feel for that resistance. Play with the energy you have gathered there, growing it, condensing it, passing it back and forth between your hands. Get a feel for its properties. This is “you” energy. Get to know it. Take as long as you need.
Step 4:
When you are finished, draw your hands back towards the trunk of your body. Press the tension you have built up against your chest and “breathe” it back in until nothing is left externally.
Repeat the earlier breathing exercise — inhale deeply, hold for three seconds, and slowly exhale through your mouth. Focus on your breathing until it is deep and regular. Bring your focus from your hands, back to your chest. Feel the weight there.
Slowly, begin rolling your shoulders. Roll your head on your neck, and shake out your arms, dispersing any tension. Shake your wrists and hands until they are loose and free. Feel yourself slowly wake from the deep relaxation you enjoyed earlier.
When you’re finished, engage in some mundane grounding activity, such as washing up, eating, or drinking. You might enjoy journaling your experiences so that you can reference them later on.
Energy Work Masterpost
Anyone who knows me will tell you that I am a stickler for energy work. In my personal experience, energy work is the single most important thing that a witch can practice. It brings so much to the table, both in practical everyday matters and in witchy stuff! Here is my complete masterpost of all of the posts from my energy work series:
Part 1: Grounding
Part 2: Centering
Part 3: Shielding
Part 4: The energy ball and programming energy
Part 5: Sending energy to objects

Energy Work
I am an energy witch! Energy work is one of the best ways to do easy, inexpensive, and on the go magic! With practice, one can produce the same results with energy magic as with spells. But how does one start?
🔮Meditation. This is very important! Choose a set time each day, and a method of meditation, and try to get in tune with your energy. Even 5 minutes is good. 🔮Try to sense the energy around you. Go with your instinct. Feels high energy? Or maybe low? Just practice this. 🔮Try an energy spell, such as a psi ball exercise. Simple is best to start with. 🔮Visualize! Daydream, actively visualize, or work on what I like to call your “mind palace” (Sherlock fans know what I’m talking about 😆) 🔮Try to “see” energy though visualization. What color is it? What shape? Can you move it? Just play with it. 🔮Work on raising energy, use music, exercise, meditation, hanging out with friends, drawing, hobbies, basically whatever makes you happy and energized. Everyone will have different ways of doing it. 🔮Again, meditation! It doesn’t need to be long, one can even sit for 2 minutes, feel their energy, and be like “good it’s there”. 🔮Work on being aware of your own energy.
How would one go about starting energy work? Are there certain exercises you can recommend?
There are a bunch of ways to start energy work! At first, aside from feeling energy in object and such, you’re going to want to start with grounding, centering, shielding, and actually being able to direct your energy places.
The way I started was meditating. Meditating may be difficult to get the hang of, but it genuinely opens you up so that you’re able to feel energy a lot easier. I actually have to start meditating again because I have to regain some stuff I lost because of trauma.
My second recommendation is trying to feel the energy of the atmosphere around you. For instance, I’ve felt a lot of bad energy around me and I could tell something bad was going to happen. It’s kind of like your gut feeling or intuition, but I guess you could say it’s more energy based.
My third recommendation is trying to feel the energy of music or objects. How does a certain song make you feel? Meditate to it. How does a certain object make you feel? I believe that working with crystals could actually help a lot with energy work because you’ll be able to strengthen your ability to feel energy by trying to feel the energy of the crystals.
These are all things that I did that worked wonders for me. Here are some other posts about energy work that could be helpful, too:

Crystals
~ What are Crystals and what are they used for?
Most crystals ( in this case including gems, rocks, precious stones, semi-precious stones, and simple stones) are of mineral origin. Crystals, like amethyst, come out of the ground naturally faceted and don’t need to be changed in anyway. Diamonds, for example, come out of the ground equally as rough, but are usually polished and cut into intricate styles.
For many years, crystal have been used as a tool to aid spiritual healing, psychic development, and meditation.
~ How can I incorporate Crystals into my everyday life?
You can carry around your crystals. This way you can feel your crystals energy when needed. Place them in a little sachet or pouch and they are ready to go!
Infuse your water with your clean crystals. This is a fast way to feel your crystals energy.
Decorate your magickal space and/or surroundings with crystals.
Meditate with your crystals. Just spend a minimum of 30 seconds with each crystal. Hold it in your hands, close your eyes, and feel its energy soaking into your skin.

How To Send Dreams 💤
This post explains how to send a dream to another person. I’ve done this before many times and it’s always worked for me. I’m not here to boss anyone around, but it’s best to get permission to do it first. If not, that’s on you.
Read this post I made about energy work. (x) You’re going to want a little experience with energy work if you want to do this, otherwise it won’t work.
Print out a picture or pull up a picture on your phone of the person you wish to send the dream to.
Create a ball of energy in your hand. Infuse the ball of energy with images or words by thinking it, then imagining the thought or word going down your arm from your head, into the ball of energy.
Slowly push the ball of energy into the picture while imagining that you are in front of that person and physically putting it into their head. Do your best to feel yourself doing it.
