I actually saw a chachalaca eat a leaf of frogfruit in my backyard.

The mystery about frogfruit is it grows in thick patches on full sun lawns especially alongside roads and sidewalks. It can clearly out compete grass and weeds when it wants to.

In May I dug up a 5ftsquare patch of exotic Bermuda grass and replaced it with native ground cover called frogfruit that I’d like to grow as a thick mowable mat that needs way less water and the bees love its flowers. Well weeds overtook it and now I’m weeding the patch carefully to preserve the frogfruit so I can try again.

To get more frogfruit I have to clip it from around town and root it in water for a week then pot it for a month then transplant.

When I pull up the rest of these weeds I hope I can mulch the bare spots to keep them free of new weedlings until I have time to plant more frogfruit maybe in the fall.

I’ve made so many mistakes in this gardening experiment and frogfruit is so beautiful I will hopefully have a whole zero maintenance lawn of it after 10 years of effort. If I’m still living in Texas which I sincerely hope to move before then.
