one guy was facetiming his sister, she was in Texas for work and I know this because they were yell-talking at each other. This went on for a few minutes so I got up, walked over and sat down in the chair next to him an asked if she was staying hygrated as I heard Texas can get really hot in the summer and that it looked like she has a bit of a sun burn.

The two of them were flabergasted. And the guy said "what are you doing???"

So I was like. "....well you included me in this call and I'm just worried about your sister."

He goes "Im having a PRIVATE conversation!"

So I goes "If it was private then how the hell do i know youre talking to your sister who is in texas on a business trip?"

Ultimately im not sure he really got the point but he lowered the volume because now he's worried about creeps like me listening to his conversations but at least he's behaving now even if he doesnt understand why

I literally did this to someone. She was listening to very very descriptive erotica on the beach at max volume. So I walked over, sat down next to her, and asked her to catch me up on the plot I'd missed. When she asked what the hell I was doing I said "oh I thought this was like a book club thing? Since you're playing it at full volume on a crowded beach?" She suddenly remembered she did in fact bring headphones and was willing to use them. She kept looking at me like I was a lunatic for the rest of the time she was there but it was probably the funniest thing I'd ever done

we were hanging out at the river - a location known for its lovely natural sounds not requiring mid ass top 40 played off a tiny bullshit speaker - and some guy had his iphone sitting on a rock playing music. i just swam over, tapped the screen, and hit pause before swimming away. dude saw me do this. dude said nothing. dude did not turn the music back on.

One of my pet peeves is when people describe cave-dwelling homo sapiens or even late hunter-gatherers with only names like 'grug' and 'ogg'. They're homo sapiens! They have the same brains and mouth and vocal cords that we do.

The earliest name we know from oral history is an Egyptian king named Iry-Hor, the earliest name we have written down is a Sumerian accountant called Kushim. The earliest known author is a Sumerian priestess named Enheduanna. Another name we have from that period is Enmebaragesi. I probably forgot some other beautiful names in this directly-from-wikipedia list. We can't look further back, but there is nothing to suggest that we were less capable of giving each other beautiful complex names.

Why does this matter? Because the idea that we as a species are constantly becoming superior is bullshit and is tied up closely with a lot of very harmful ideologies (capitalism, eugenics and fascism, to name a few). We're not becoming a superior species. We're passing on information and inventing more stuff and figuring out how to live longer, but those are social processes, they come from humans taking care of each other and valuing the preservation and free exchange of knowledge. They don't come from being fundamentally better than our ancestors, we're not.

Don’t join the army to get free college. First two years of community college is free. Peace corps and Americorps have scholarships and student loan forgiveness programs for their volunteers. If you’re not rich you probably qualify for Pell grants. Go to a state college. They teach you the same things they do at fancy colleges. Sometimes there’s scholarships for people of a certain background. Ethnicity. Sexuality. Gender. Religion. Go to a grad school that’ll give you free tuition for working there as a teacher or assistant. Become a stripper or something. Just don’t join the army.

It’s crazy how homophobes/transphobes are always like “I don’t think gay and trans people should exist in public. How do I explain them to my child?” and gay and trans people are like “Oh okay, I can do it for you. Sometimes boys like other boys and girls like other girls. Sometimes people are told they’re a girl as a child but realize they’re actually a boy or something in between a boy and a girl or no gender at all and vise versa.” and then they ban the books explaining these extremely simple concepts in child friendly terms.
