Ok this is it, I have to get something of my chest. Because of this goddamned Odyssey film I keep reading everywhere that Emily Wilson is the first woman to translate the Odyssey and because of this she has a unique take on the text.... NO NO NO THIS IS NOT TRUE she's the first ENGLISH woman to translate the Odyssey but women have been translating and publishing their translation since the 1700s !!!! In French and Italian and I'm sure other languages too!!

I'm so mad because students in Italy have been studying on Rosa Calzecchi Onesti's translation for decades!! Her translation is so well regarded it keeps being used in academia to this day and it's from the 60s!!! There have been dozens of other translations since then but we keep using that one !!!

(and also many other women published their translations both before and after her)

I have obviously not been fond of The Mysteries of Udolpho, but I do need to say that Ann Radcliffe was an incredibly important writer, acknowledged as such at the time. The Mysteries of Udolpho was a massive bestseller, and it and her subsequent works made her a lot of money, enough to let her husband quit working for a while, and to allow them to travel. (Though she never seems to have traveled in France.) Her works were credited with starting the "Radcliffe School", and while she didn't invent the Gothic genre, she refined and popularized this particular form of it: Highly emotional with lots of nature and poetry, not terribly violent, and with the "explained supernatural" as a theme.

Radcliffe influenced pretty much every fiction and poetry writer in Britain of the 19th century, and many in France as well. That doesn't mean it influenced them all to write like her -- Austen, for one, obviously had serious problems with some of Radcliffe's major themes. But in later years, her importance and works, like that of so many women, were buried. People worked to resurrect them starting early in the 20th century, and now she is finally getting the respect she once had and still deserves.

If you want to truly understand the Regency period of England, and much of the development of literature in the time, I think you have to read some Radcliffe. My husband keeps being puzzled as to why I'm reading this book when I obviously don't like it. It's because I'm fascinated by how literature both presents and shapes views on history and ourselves. As I am not writing a masters' thesis, I'm not being fully academic in what I say about it. I'd have to read a whole lot more books and papers for that anyway.

Scammers are gaining access to legit/established accounts and messaging their followers/people they've previously dm'd to steal money/access to their accounts. This is important because one of the accounts they STOLE @/yetacomis does legit commissions! We've shared email/payment info and she's done this commission for me.

They will contact you telling you that they've reported you and that they've got their friends to report you too in order to scare you. They may even mention they mistook you for another user or provide a fake case number.

How can you protect yourself?

1. Tumblr will NEVER ask you to contact them via discord for account disputes. If you are banned/suspended/in violation of a rule an automated email will come from a tumblr dot com email address. Any communication with a human is user initiated and comes from their zendesk ticketing system.

2. Turn on 2FA (2-Factor Authentication). This way if you are scammed they will not immediately gain access. Tumblr will NEVER ask for your 2FA code. NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR 2FA CODE!!!

Ironically enough I received this message literally 10 minutes before I saw a dm from my moot @ramonathinks telling me she got something similar from a different account @/carlkojee. Here is what she received:
