how it feels to be obsessed with your own ocs but you cant think of what to say about them
Rico, Aiden, and Jamila: Language
More flow of thought posting while im at work
One of the reasons i wanted Blackthorn to be based in Algeria is because i wanted their lingua franca for operations and document translations to be Arabic.
Jamila knows how to read and speak arabic very well as a part of not only working there but specifically working in the BOH* archive. (She also speaks french, french creole, and english)
Rico speaks and reads arabic courtesy of Healey's private education. He worked on and/or lead multiple teams with people of different backgrounds so it was good to have Rico be able to speak with and understand them so to most effectively keep them in line with Healey's wants.
Aiden is the only one who cant really speak or read arabic. She knows bits and pieces, but her mother, who was egyptian, passed when Aiden was young and before she could really pass on the language. Most of what she knows is stuff she learned from cousins, aunts, and uncles, but it wasnt quite the same as speaking it in her home everyday.
So when she starts working for blackthorn alongside Jamila, theres this sort of linguistic tension. She has to learn to speak and read a language she should have learned from her mother and that her two lovers who aren't even from arabic cultures already speak fluently.
There is a little bit of resentment or frustration as a result. Aidens emotions are loud, but its not enough to cause a rift or anything. Its mostly just old grief.
*BOH > Back of House. Internal lingo for the secret society aspect of blackthorn. Front of House would be the public facing institute.

just ask that person out, the worst thing they can say is an esoteric incantation that topologically inverts your body
Real thing that changed how i write: I started asking "what does this character think is wrong with them" and separately "what is actually wrong with them." Those two things are almost never the same. She thinks she's too much. She's actually terrified of being too little. He thinks he's bad at commitment. He's actually just never met someone he trusted enough. The gap between their diagnosis of themselves and the real thing, that's your character arc right there. you don't have to explain it. just write both.
