When customers complain about issues you can't control
We are appalled by President Trump’s tweets about banning transgender people from military service. There are an estimated 15,000 transgender people already working in the Department of Defense, putting their lives on the line to protect our nation and its values. Those values do not include the heartlessness exhibited by Mr. Trump this morning. Discrimination has no place in our government, in our workplaces, our schools, or anywhere else in our lives.
While it’s still unclear what the actual policy ramifications of these tweets will be, we recommend keeping up with (and, if you can, donating to) the ACLU and the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund.
You can also directly tell the president how unacceptable his attack on American servicepersons is by using this form provided by the @transgenderfreedomproject.
We know there will be plenty of conversation about this on Tumblr in the coming days, and we urge you to take this moment to support and educate each other in whatever ways you can. And if you just need someone to talk to right now, there are people here to listen, 24 hours a day, seven days a week:

Be kind or at least be considerate
Tonight I witnessed one of those bad customer moments at a restaurant. My sister and I were eating sushi at our favorite spot, it was nearing their closing time so we ate our food quickly in an effort to get out of there. We understand they have more responsibilities than just waiting on us when closing. (if you don’t know, cleaning, counting the money in the register and checking totals are among some of the things restaurants and retail stores usually do at closing. Yes, I speak from experience) Unfortunately the table next to us didn’t share the same thought (or courtesy) we had. No, these two young ladies decided to order more food to-go come closing time. Then proceeded to insist they get the special price that is clearly stated on the menu (that they had in front of them) that it does NOT apply to to-go orders. After they gave up on that they paid for their food, by that point I had told my sister I was going to tip the waitress $10. It wasn’t much but it was a little more than what I could tip for our meal being that I’m on a tight budget this week. (Christmas in a big family kills the wallet) However when those girls left we noticed the $1 they left as a tip. We couldn’t believe it! With all the food they ate on top of the food they ordered to go and the fuss they made, that just seemed ridiculous to us. The waitress was so nice and she was working so hard tonight it was almost heartbreaking.
FYI this is a very small restaurant, they usually only have 1 waiter/waitress working at a time, 2 if it’s extremely busy and she was training someone that evening as well. She was literally zooming all over the place tonight and these girls made, not only her work longer, but the cooks as well. Then gave her a hard time about something that she can’t change causing the other customers (us and a few other tables) to wait longer to pay and get out of there. So you can only imagine how stressed she must have been. (also I’m not talking about a young waitress, she’s an elderly woman and no she’s not the owner)
So I just couldn’t leave without helping make her night a little better, I decided to tip her $20 which I feel still wasn’t enough but it was literally the most I could do on my budget this week. I also left a little note on the receipt thanking her for all her hard work tonight and wishing her a Merry Christmas. (I added the note because I wanted to leave more than just $20 but since I could leave more money I left a note to to express that I appreciated her. No one should be treated like those girls treated her and the last thing I wanted was for her to feel unappreciated and/or frustrated) She picked up the signed copy of the receipt as we got up and thanked us for coming in tonight. I figured we’d be out of there before she read it but as we got to the door she thanked us again, gesturing to the receipt.
I’m a bit socially awkward so I thanked her again and wished her a Merry Christmas but I said it sincerely so that’s what matters right? :)
Moral of the story, be kind and if you can’t be kind at least be considerate!
PS: If you’re wondering exactly what the note said it was “Thank you so much for all your hard work tonight! Merry Christmas!”
Mannequins.
Everyone who’s seen an older Old Navy commercial remembers the terrifying mannequins.
I was cashing out a woman today and her six year old was acting up. The kid was pushing over piles trying to sit down on the tables and playing with the scanner on the counter as I tried to ring things up. Whenever he’d try to run off to go look at something his mom would have to walk away, grab him, and haul him back over to her. She looked beyond frazzled and kept apologizing for cutting me off to yell at him.
I leaned down over the counter and said to him, “Hey, buddy - you wanna know a secret about Old Navy?” He nodded, eyes getting wide. “Last time someone knocked over all those piles on purpose, they became one of those guys and had to live here forever,” pointing to the family of mannequins that stand in front of our registers. Her son was completely silent and on best behavior for the rest of the transaction. I’m not sure who had a harder time not laughing - me or or his mom.
I don’t do it often, but sometimes giving a parent a few minutes of peace like this is worth it.
When an annoying regular is walking in, and I need to get to the stockroom without being seen.
Angry Customer: You should really have more people working! It's REALLY busy!!!
Me:
Oh boy do I feel this one, at our small store we only have a few employees working at a time. Heaven forbid anyone should need to take a break, I’ve had to ACTUALLY explain that to a customer. Sadly I am not joking.
When a customer throws 20 items on my station and immediately barks, "HOW MUCH!?"
Yeeeeessss
Things not to say to a retail associate who is leaving work for the day:
* “They let you leave?” * “I thought you lived here!” * “Real quick, let me ask you something.” * “Uh uh, you better turn around. You’re walking the wrong way!”
Whether you realize it or not, you’re implying we don’t deserve to go home and rest or spend time with our families. You’re not funny, you’re extremely rude and you need to stop.
Yes, this truely needs to stop! It's a shame and down right ridiculous that some people can't see how just how degrading their "jokes" really are.
"We all get a little unwanted ketchup every now and again, and we are all expected to handle it like mature and decent adults. Some of us manage to make it through our whole lives without ever feeling the need to berate restaurant or retail employees over some small and fixable mistake. Other folks, such as yourself, seem to get into a customer service Battle Royale every time they step outside their house. Maybe it's because the universe is against you guys. Or maybe -- just maybe -- it's because you behave like selfish obnoxious bullies. Just something to think about." Just a piece of a very good article, we believe everyone should read, epecially around the holidays!
Today is a “Fuck off” kind of day
Every day in retail during the holidays
I’m being forced to ask if you want a credit card/ membership card. Please don’t yell at me when I ask
working in small business retail
Me: “Ok, that’ll be $9.72, would you like a bag?”
Woman: “no, but I would like a recipe.”
Me: “ok, I can either text or email that to you, which would you prefer?”
Woman: *scoffs* “paper.”
Me: “we don’t have a receipt printer, but-”
Woman: “You’re kidding. What kind of world is this?”
Me: “We’re using the Square System with an iPad, it can send or text a receipt automaticity and we don’t have to waste paper printing receipts that usually just get thrown away.”
Woman: “Oh yES. Save the TREES! look at ALL THESE TREES you’ve planted with your fancy iPad! This is outrageous. You’re probably going to loose me as a customer.”
Me: “I apologize for the inconv-”
Woman: “you’re technology is doing more harm than good. It causes cancer. So does cellphones! I tried to stop those too.”
Me: (internally) hoe, the fuck is your damage
Woman: “Do you own this store?”
Me: “No, I just work here.”
Woman: “when will your boss be here?”
Me: “well I’m the only one working weekdays, on the weekends one of the owners-”
Woman: “so he’s unreachable! This is ridiculous. Please write a receipt for me.”
Me: *hands her the writer receipt that I’ve been trying to hand to her for the past 3 minutes"
Woman: *leaves the door open on the way out
