Office Job vs Retail Job by @noobtheloser
Check out Confessions of a Retail Worker
Dealt with a phone customer this afternoon who I’m pretty sure had a five second memory. Imagine this conversation carrying on for twenty minutes:
Customer: “So, you don’t have the pink/multi or the blue/multi [cardigan] in size small, but you have the turquoise and the orange in small?” Me: “Correct.” C: “Because I called back on October 2nd, and the woman I spoke with said she’d put the pink/multi on hold for me; but when I called the next day it was gone. Isn’t that weird? It was just gone.” M: “We only put un-purchased items on hold for up to 48hrs. After that time if we don’t hear back from the customer, we put the items back on the selling floor.” C: “But I called the next day, and it was gone. Isn’t that weird? It’s so weird. The lady told me to call each week to see if any have come in, so… have any come in?” M: “No, we only have the pink/multi in medium.” C: “Uh-huh. Uh-huh. And what would you wear with the turquoise?” M: “… jeans?” C: “Would you wear khakis with them?” M: “I don’t own any khakis, so no… I probably wouldn’t wear khakis with that cardigan.” The woman pauses before asking, “And what would you wear with the turquoise?” I’m thinking, “Seriously? I just answered this.” I reply, “Probably jeans.” C: “And the azalea? What would you wear with the azalea? Khaki? Do you like the orange or the turquoise better? I guess the turquoise is busier than the blue/multi… What about the turquoise and the azalea? I suppose the azalea is more versatile. What would you wear with the turquoise? Khaki?”
Rewind… repeat… rewind… repeat…
…Twenty minutes later…
C: “It’s just so weird. You have the medium in the pink/multi and the blue/multi, and when I called your store on October 2nd you had them in the small. Then they were just gone. That’s so weird… I might go with the small in the azalea. It’s three dollars cheaper than the turquoise and more versatile… but since I was promised the pink/multi and then it was just gone when I called back to purchase it, which is so weird, right? It’s so weird. Since it was promised to me, is there anything you can do about the shipping charge? Like waive the shipping charge?” M: “No, ma'am. There’s nothing I can do about the shipping charge. If we put that cardigan on hold for you, and you didn’t call back within the time you said you would, then it was put back on the selling floor. You do realize this is a retail store, right?” C: “But I called the next day, and then it was just gone. You had two left, and then it was gone. That’s so weird, right?” M: “Ma'am, this is an outlet retail store. We sell things. We don’t make promises that certain items will always be in stock; we’re continuously discontinuing and marking down stock.” C: “So, can you see if you can do something about the shipping charge? I might buy the azalea if you can waive the shipping charge.” M: “Sure. Hold please.” I leave the woman on hold for a few minutes before coming back to the line saying, “Yeah, we’re not going to be able to waive that shipping fee.” C: “Oh, okay. I’m going to have to think about that then. Goodbye.”
Apparently five of my coworkers have unfortunately conversed with this woman over the past month. Stories confirmed: Lady is legit cra'y cra'y.
Several days pass: So, cra'y cardigan lady called back again today… five times… being indecisive if she wanted to buy the tabasco color dress we had on hold for her or the black version the catalog has available. She almost bought the tabasco one we put on hold for her, but she would only buy it if we waived the shipping on this order seeing as we “sold the sweater we ’promised’ her.” She’s naming names now trying to get associates in trouble over the possibility of getting free shipping… over a matter of six dollars. Had the catalog customer service put a flag on her account so everybody knows this lady is trouble. *Reposted image that was meant to accompany this story simply because I could not for the life of me find my transcript of this conversation until just now.
Sounds almost identical to a story I had from my first holiday season at a Gap Outlet. Trying to explain the most basic information to some people is like trying to explain what the color nine smells like.
March on retail warrior.
working in retail
I fucking hate when people ask for cash back in general but the worst is when they ask for "nice bills" because they need them for a gift. Go to the fucking bank if you want nice looking bills.
I have never read a more true statement.
I had a customer refuse a $20 as change because it was taped on the corner and that it "looked dirty".
I had just opened and it was literally the only $20 in any of the six registers. I counted out his change in $15 singles and a $5 as slowly as I could to make him wait. Don't be a dick. If you want "nice money" go to the bank or don't use cash period.
If anyone in California is interested in adopting a dog or a cat, Kerns County Animal Shelter ( one of the most disgraceful shelters in California ) is being shut down. Dogs are being sold for 15$ and cats for 5$ ( all are fixed with shots. )
Every animal will be put down by September 30th.
Go here for more information.
Stop shopping at Urban Outfitters.
DOnt shop at urban outfitters
they literally sold a blood-stained-looking sweatshirt with the name of a college where the ohio national guard massacred 4 innocent students
they sold prescription-drug related accessories trying to make it cute
they sold a board game entitled “gettopoly” i should not have to explain why this is bad
they sold a super transmisogynistic card with the T slur on it
they literally sold this shirt
PLEASE STOP SHOPPING AT URBAN OUTFITTERS
It’s a good thing I’ve never spent a dime at this fucking shit store.
As a retail employee PLEASE do not spend your money here but do not antagonize the employees that work there. A LOT of people work for companies that sell/promote terrible products or are ignorant about social issues, but a job is a job and for most of us, our families come before personal beliefs.
If you find yourself suddenly needing a TON of money for an emergency vet bill, it can be very stressful! Luckily, there are some things you can do to help your situation. I know from personal experience that this is THE WORST! Stay positive if you can, because things can work out. Personally, I applied for Care Credit and did a fundraiser through YouCaring. There are other options out there too! (also a reminder that we only signal boost and donate to certified non-profits, so we can’t help individuals in those ways, but I hope this post helps out because I know how difficult this can be!)
SIGNAL BOOOOOST
jobs are for survival, not for joy. not everyone has the luxury or pleasure of loving what they do. they do it bc it pays the bills and everyone needs to stop acting like everyone is supposed to love their job. if you love your job, you are lucky.
To follow up - the idea that everyone can or should find/work their dream job is a really privileged concept. Quite a few people work two or three jobs just to get by - don’t tell them to believe in the universe or some shit to find their dream job. The fucking reality is that if we really think that works we are privileged.
I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU'RE DOING STOP AND READ THIS
Ok Dr. Phil’s wife, Robin, (yes groan, but listen up) has this new app out (iPhone and Android) that’s for people in abusive relationships. It’s called Aspire News and it’s disguised as a regular news app, but when you go to the “Help” section of the app, it leads you to domestic violence resources and also has a “Go Button” that when you press it, if you’re in a compromising situation, alerts local authorities as well as local shelters and starts recording everything that is going on.
Now, if you’re looking up resources on the app and your abuser is near, simply press the X button and it brings you to a random news page. Same goes for the actual foundation site.
ITS COMPLETELY FREE Site

How long is it reasonable to wait to be acknowledged by a server? We were out tonight and while it was busy, we went ten minutes without even a simple "I'll be right there!" before my mom got fed up and we left. There were also a ton of servers around but it also felt like they were purposely avoiding looking at us? We aren't regulars and haven't been there in over a year so I don't feel like we have a bad reputation and we always tip well...
Ten minutes is bullshit. If you wait more than 3-5 minutes (and 3-5 is being exceptionally generous) you need to flag a server down and ask for a manager.
Standard time between being sat and greeted is around 45-60 seconds.
It’s entirely possible something was up that no server knew you were supposed to be their table, that’s why involving a manager is good for both you and the restaurant. Good for you because you *finally* get service and good for the establishment because they can figure out where the breakdown in service happened and *hopefully* fix it.
‘A Californian congressmen has just introduced a law to make it illegal to keep orcas in captivity. This could change everything — but SeaWorld is already mounting a vicious campaign to defeat this congressman’s brave move. We need to tell the State of California that the public won’t accept SeaWorld’s imprisonment of orcas any longer.’

No, I can't "just".
"Like, can't you just let it slide? I don't understand why it's such an issue. I've never had this problem before at *other* locations." No lady, I can't "just" exchange more than $100 worth of merchandise for you that you claim you lost the receipt for months ago and give you "your" cash back for it. I don't care if they're the same thing, if you don't have a receipt or credit card used at the time of sale there's nothing we can do but offer you a merchandise credit by mail. And if you've "never had this issue before" who the hell was letting you do it all this time?
Your blog is pure gold and I'm mining away. Haha.
Have at it haha, glad you enjoy it!
“It can be tough dealing with the public every day. There’s such a sense of entitlement. So many people feel like the rules don’t apply to them, and they know that if they call up and complain loudly enough, they’ll eventually get their way.”
What's the dress code like at Old Navy? I just applied and was thinking about what I'd wear to the interview/to work. Also I have a dermal beneath my eye and I was wondering if that's okay or not. Thanks in advance!
Hey! I’m sorry I took a bit to respond, my store has been crazy.
To answer your questions, and I’m assuming your interview took place already (and if it went well, congrats!):
Your dermal should be totally fine upon hiring! I took out my lip and septum piercings but kept my plugs on during my interview with Gap. The hiring manager explained as long as I removed them before going on to the floor it was okay. Old Navy though has a much more relaxed dress code. We’ve had several employees with piercings get hired even when having them visible during the interviews.
At my old job we would always have a copy of the active coupon at the register so if a customer didn't have one and asked about it, we were just supposed to give it to them. One day the coupon was $10 off $25 and this lady was like "I can't find my coupon, do you have one I can use?" So I said sure and that I would give it to her. Then halfway through she was like "oh wait I found mine. So I'll just split it up and use my coupon on these things and yours on these." Lol bitch no
