Hey so I just learned that a Great Comet of 1812 proshot exists in the New York Public Library's Theatre on Film and Tape Archive, as well as a Phantom of the Opera proshot and now I wanna go to New York-

So the TOFT does have recordings of every Broadway show going back to 1970, but they’re not necessarily “pro shots” like what was made for Hamilton or RENT or Into the Woods. They are usually one-camera, back of house recordings and not made with distribution quality recording equipment. Dave actually posted (to twitter or his blog?) about it when they did the recording during the show’s run! He specifically talked about why those recordings can’t be used for wide-release/home viewing beyond just the copyright issues.

That said!! The TOFT is a very cool project and if you do go to New York, make a library card and a Special Collections account ahead of time and you can walk in and watch a basically any show you can think of for free! On a tiny, private monitor in the viewing room, but it’s still cool!
