I never managed to make a decision between those two anniversary gift options, so I was just going to show him both today and let him pick one. But yesterday when I was scrolling through VarageSale looking for furniture, someone posted a Wii for $30. Ryan has been wanting a Wii for longer than I can remember, because he misses playing classic Nintendo games. So I hopped on it right away. I sent Ryan a text that said, “After work go to Walgreens, look for a black truck, and give them $30. Happy Anniversary.” I got a giddy text back after he had picked it up, and he was really excited when he got home.
anniversary gift level: shady drug deal
When a toxic person can no longer control you, they will try to control how others see you. The misinformation will feel unfair, but stay above it, trusting that other people will eventually see the truth, just like you did.

When we choose growth over perfection, we immediately increase our shame resilience. Improvement is a far more realistic goal than perfection. Merely letting go of unattainable goals makes us less susceptible to shame. When we believe “we must be this” we ignore who or what we actually are, our capacity and our limitations. We start from the image of perfection, and of course, from perfection there is nowhere to go but down.
