The epic highs and lows of being a mcyt fan
"you only deserve food and shelter if you contribute to society" says people living in countries where nobody's labor actually feeds or benefits their neighbors anymore but exclusively benefits the companies keeping the food and shelter behind the artificial paywalls
You're not nomads relying on each other to hunt and gather anymore, you're talking about stocking shelves for fucking wal marts
And even the oldest societies on earth all took care of the elderly or sick anyway
dudes will be like "if you don't Contribute To Society you don't get to live, that's the simple facts" meanwhile their job is like Marketing and Brand Development Specialist
oh sick someone paved this whole road with good intentions. i wonder where it leads
I’m not trying to attack you or anything, just trying to get a more clear idea.
But from what I’m understanding a creator posted a boundary about something they’re uncomfortable with and you’re just deciding to ignore it?? If so, that’s actually insanely disrespectful. If not, is there possibly something more clarifying to say?
I’m actually glad you asked! This is probably the last post I’m going to be making on this subject, but let me provide you with a comparison that might make things easier to understand.
This is a bit like someone you know saying; “Hey, people listening to rap music makes me uncomfortable, can you please stop?”
And it’s like… what? I mean, I can… not play it out loud when I know you’re around. A bit of a weird request to make, but if it’s really that bad, then I don’t mind making accommodations.
And they reply with; “No. The fact that people listen to it all makes me uncomfortable. I want you to stop listening to it entirely. It’s against my boundaries.”
Which like… that isn’t a boundary. A boundary is something that dictates how people interact with YOU. Like, I can’t even listen to it in my OWN privacy? How the hell does that affect you in any way, shape, or form? That isn’t a boundary, it’s an attempt to control my personal agency and interests. I don’t even have to LIKE rap music very much for this to be a problem.
Then they say; “If I catch you or anyone else in this community listening to or creating rap music, then I will be sending people to harass and excommunicate you from this space.”
like… ??? I’m sorry, but that’s absurd. You do realize how that’s entirely absurd and unreasonable, right? In a community that is known for loving and thrives off of it? It is not our job to coddle your internet experience- if something is triggering or makes you uncomfortable then it is your responsibility to avoid those things. I am not shoving these things in your face, and at this point you’re only going to find it if you are actively looking for it.
This doesn’t even begin to address the issue of queer-baiting and internalized homophobia of the matter. A fan space ultimately belongs to the fans, first and foremost. If there is something that makes you uncomfortable, then you don’t have to interact with it at all. When you share a creation, you forfeit control over how people perceive and interpret those things, that’s just the nature of art and performance. If you truly cannot handle the way people interact with the things you make, then perhaps this is not a career you are fully equipped to handle.
Hopefully this helps explain a couple things- this allegory has been floating around in my mind for a while, and I appreciate the excuse to share my perspective on things.
I'm only going to speak this one time on the matter.
The shipping situation with Pyroscythe and Maddie has been handled horribly. Point blank.
Maddie is completely valid in being uncomfortable, I will not hear anyone say otherwise. That being said, expecting the entire internet to bend to your whims as a creator is wrong.
Fandom existed before, many of us, myself included, have been here for years. Within the last several years there has been a shift of Content Creators becoming extremely involved in their fandoms, and it has become a detriment to the culture as a whole. This is not just Pyroscythe, many many others are just as guilty.
So to those Content Creators, you are a person just like the rest of us. You have to curate your online experience just like us as well. You do not get to control fandom spaces, you don't control what we create for free. You're characters stopped being completely your own the second it was shown on the internet. If something makes you uncomfortable, you have to take the action to avoid those fanworks. Block tags, block accounts, scroll past. You do not get to say what we can and cannot do. You are in control of the buttons you press, of what you see.
To my fellow fans, do as you wish with fictional characters in your art. You're not doing it for the CCs, you're doing it for you. Rarepairs and crackships have existed for decades. Ships that are strange or wrong or controversial have existed just as long. You are your own person, not everyone will like what you make, but at the same time, someone might love it. Please keep creating. The CCs don't control you. At the same time, don't force your works onto others. Tag properly, don't @ the CCs. That is how you be respectful without giving up what you love.
Fictional characters are just that, fictional. When I write fanfiction, I am taking fictional characters and playing with them like dolls. They are not real, nothing I do with them affects real life.
All of this is to say, I will not stop writing my fics. I am not making them for the CCs to see, in fact, I have never wanted them to see it. So, I will continue to ship V!Majorscythe. I refuse to give up the ship that finally broke a years long writter's block. I will not abandon my in-progress fics. I am expecting a dynamic change on The Flight, so I will not be writing anything with TF!Majorscythe, I will likely still interact with other's works & art though. If this upsets you, block me now. Control is not how fandom works. I saw someone say how this is our house. Fandom is our space. If you don't like it, leave. I will not be pushed out of my space, my home.
I sincerely hope if somehow this is seen by Pyro, or any other CCs, it helps them understand how poorly this was handled. You cannot control fandom spaces. 6+ years ago, you would never know what we talk about, what we shipped. This space isn't for you and trying to control it makes it unsafe for us. You're not above us, block features exist for a reason.
Stay safe, curate your online experience, you are loved.
Thank you.
How to avoid shipping problems
1) Make sure shipping fics are appropriately labelled.
2) Ignore things with those labels
3) If you have problems with 1 or 2 which are things you can control, do not post a diatribe on the main tag telling people that they are gross and disgusting and they should leave the main tag, because that is gross and disgusting.
It’s sickening to come into this place and seeing people hating others because they do something harmless you don’t like. I am embarrassed that this is representing Hermitcraft fandom. I have no control here, I cannot stop you but the shaming has to stop.
Forget about boundaries for a minute. Let's talk about triggers.
Triggers are a reaction that can form due to exposure to traumatic situations. Some aspect of the environment around the trauma (an item, a song, a food- ANYTHING) becomes associated with the trauma. Future exposure to that trigger brings up the memory of the trauma, causing things like flashbacks or dissociation.
Let's imagine someone who spent a lot of time very sick in the hospital, and as a result they're triggered by the smell of a specific brand of cleaner. Any time they smell it, it feels like they're right back alone and in pain and dying in that hospital bed.
What do you expect they might do to handle that? They might let friends and family whose houses they visit know, so those people avoid that scent. Maybe they've had to leave stores or restaurants a few times, so they call ahead to check if that cleaner is used. Maybe they go to therapy and start working on controlled exposure to it, or how to lessen their reaction.
Why don't they just ask that no one uses that cleaner anymore? It's legitimately triggering to them, it can make them have panic attacks - why would anyone want to use something like that, knowing how much it could upset them? It's not like there aren't plenty of other cleaning supplies and scents out there! How obsessed are you with this cleaner that you can't agree to not use it? Surely you understand how disrespectful it is to prioritize a smell over someone's comfort, they're a person too.
...
Someone who creates media (whether acting, writing, streaming, or otherwise) does not retain control over the stories other people tell when inspired by what they made. It's not about the fucking shipping, it's that the request is fundamentally unreasonable and controlling. Pretty much everyone is happy to use tags and filters and archive locking to ensure CCs don't have to see things they don't like; but if a CC wants to ensure art or writing exists to their precise specifications, that's called a commission.
A creator announcing you can't ship their characters is just a different flavor of Anne Rice issuing takedown letters to gay fanfic of IWTV, and deserves to be equally clowned on.
If you can't bear anyone else playing with the toys you make in ways you don't specifically approve of, don't be a toymaker. Once they're out in the world, in other people's hands and governed by their imaginations, they will do things you didn't intend. They will bury the toy in sand, or they will make the toys kiss, or they will draw all over the toy in permanent marker.
If someone is mailing you pictures of the assorted ways they've destroyed your toys, that's weird and you can and should ban them from doing so. If you're collaborating with other toymakers professionally, it would be perfectly reasonable to ask them to interact with your toys publicly in proscribed ways- that is both a professional business arrangement and a genuine one-on-one relationship.
But the toys themselves aren't yours anymore.
Everyone who sees a performance or movie or stream has a sliver of the idea of that character in their head, and you don't get to tell them what to do with it once it's there. That isn't how telling stories works; it's never been a right anyone could claim.
Your just saying that because your a sick pervert who gets off to themes and ideas
Pyro and Scott finally reconciliated and went on their first date!
That date being hunting CPK down like an animal and hostage negotations!
Much fun.

I've reached the point where cynicism is a major turn-off for me. You're not smarter than idealists, and you're not helping.
Funny that the stereotypical cynic is an idealist who aged out of it. In my experience, the reverse is true. I was an extreme cynic as a teenager and then I noticed how profoundly limiting it was, and also that "cynics are cool and smart" was a message that was being constantly reinforced by corporate media for some reason.
#yes! cynicism reads as very juvenile to me#and yes prev often stemming from teen pain
Yeah, like I see black-pilled people on here and my default reaction isn't "oh, these must be world-weary old warriors who've lost their faith in humanity", it's "these people are in their 20s and need a hobby"
