Hello!
Sending this for two people ^^ I bought the Dark Fairy zine and saw your Owl Dinner artwork, screamed over it a bit, then found you on tumblr, saw you posted it, and sent it to a friend of mine so we could scream about it together :D
We really loove so many things about it, how you painted it (and the metallic surfaces!!), the poses, the face expressions (i can only hope someday mine will be as lifelike!), the claws, and the possible stories in it.
I am unsure if you're someone who likes giving details about your art, so please feel free to just say it's all a secret, of course... but if not, we also have some questions
- is the held rat alive?? we are on the fence about it. a bet, you might say
- who IS this human?? she looks like a knight, but also kinda like a princess? princess knight? what was she doing there? do you have any sort of wider story in your head about the artwork?
- are the rats trying to escape to the chandelier? :D it kinda looks like it, at least some of the rats seem to be in on it..
- where ARE we? there is a table, but also trees in the background... or are those shadows on a wall? hmm
Thank you for your time, please take this photo of my nail funnily matching as a token of appreciation (the nails are really realistic, what did you reference them with..? :P)
Hi! That's so incredibly sweet! First of all thank you so much for supporting the Dark Fairy zineđand I am so so happy that your friend and you liked the owl dinner, and it even made you curious about the story behind. It truly means a lot! I am also very jealous of your nailđ thank you for sharing! the reference were the actual owl claws, I think they are prettyđ¤
It's not a secret, I am just not as good in describing my concepts with words, but I'll try.
The rat is alive! It most likely accepted its grim fate - which is to be eaten, but it is not yet, and, depending on the viewer's head canon, it might never be. I will add my sketches for this illustration, but the rats are originally part of the owl fairy design, as well as part of her magical being. You could view them as her magic spilling out, extending and staying to be consumed again, whenever she feels like having a snack. In their rat state they get to run around committing tiny acts of vandalism and mischief. But they can't get too far, that chandelier one is just particularly daringđ. And maybe one day, with the power of LOVE, the big bad owl fairy will even stop viewing them as food, who knows.
The human is a fairy hunter. She might not look like a hunter in her current predicament, but her plan was to heroically defeat the evil in these woods. I imagined her a little princess like - idealistic, fuzzy, beautiful, and prickly. In her world evil is just evil because it's said to be, until she ends up on the platter. Her design is inspired by the white rabbit. It's not very prominent in the final version, more so in the concept when I was still experimenting. The other rabbit, closer to the viewer, is there for intimidation, and to symbolize what's to come to little creatures that enter uninvited. Owl fairy has a very crude sense of humor đ She will offer you a rat for a treat and then cackle about it.
Their theme is consumption and hunter/hunted, where they get to be both.
And they are in the forest, it's like an Alice tea party situation, where you get a place for the fancy table in the woods.
And here are the concepts, nothing fancy, but they reflect the dynamic a little. You can also see how some elements of the pose changed with time, especially for the fairy hunter, I moved her around a lot.

sometimes i think about how iâve effectively dug myself a grave with this blog. half my internet presence is about being queer and ukrainian, famously two things russia hates the most.
if trump proceeds with the âpeaceful negotiationsâ that happen without ukraine even present, if he pushes to implement another leader in ukraine (meaning, of course, a pro-russian puppet) and makes my country a quote unquote neutral territory, it obviously means occupation. when there are bombs over my head, iâm at least an abstract target, i can rely on luck not to get hit. if russians come to power tho? iâm toast.
i wish i was exaggerating, but this is already happening to people in occupied parts of the country. those who had social media posts in ukrainian, about queer rights, etc. are being seeked out and threatened. my acquaintance was once on call with her friend on crimea, who had weird noises in the background. when questioned, she casually said that they were coming from russian police beating her neighbour for listening to ukrainian music.
i constantly hear from people who miraculously left the occupied territories how they had to delete everything from their phones, because russian soldiers would do random phone searches â both just on the street or when a person tries to leave the occupied city. itâs not uncommon that people get shot over it.
everything about âpeaceful negotiationsâ and âcompromisesâ, trading âland for a peace agreementâ promises me a death sentence
