Since there are like, actual people following me now I feel like I should throw out there that any of my short little posts I absolutely have more thoughts on I just also have ADHD and am unlikely to write anything longer without prompting.

Which is to say, if I post something you find interesting, my ask box is open and I will absolutely answer any questions about it/ramble at length with the slightest motivation.

Also to clarify, any views expressed herein are not intended as judgements of other people’s preferences and interpretations of omegaverse. This is purely about my own likes, dislikes, squicks, and Favorite Things

the "milkman" is a common figure in stories depicting a woman's infidelity and adulterous affair.

this implies that the ability to provide milk would both decrease the likelihood of a man abandoning his wife and children, as it would eliminate the need for leaving to get milk AND would secure that man's marriage, as his wife would have no need to seek milk from an extraneous source.

So someone left this comment on a post (an ongoing conversation between other people) in the past few hours and since my name got slapped on it I'm talking about it.

(urls redacted so that nobody else has to be involved in this if they don't want to be.)

To start I would like to request that my meta and opinions and analysis and dicking around for fun on the internet not be used to attack people with. Especially people who are minding their own business.

It's unkind and, in general, I am of the opinion that if you see a post with something that annoys you to the point you need to publicly disagree, make your own post and don't tag the people playing with jpg dolls in the original post.

Specifically regarding the omegaverse:

People assign fictional genders to fictional characters for a variety of equally valid reasons including but not limited to "it just makes sense to me", "it's thematically consistent", and "I think it's hot."

I approach the omegaverse in general, and my DC omegaverse (which I have been developing for 11 years now) in specific, through the joint lenses of worldbuilding and thematic identity. While I am perfectly happy to discuss just about any gender + character combination in isolation, the opinions I use as my default are held through a combination of my belief in what constitutes the core of the character in question canonically, and what flavor of stories I want to write about them.

And those are my personal preferences.

Do I think that the tendency in fandom to assign Diana as an alpha is something worth discussing seriously? Absolutely. Do I also think it is possible to have a thoughtful and thought-provoking portrayal of Diana as an alpha? Also absolutely! None of that is relevant, however because there is a time and a place and other people's notes are not it unless they have specifically opened the floor for discussion.

absolutely looosssinggg it. i'm so obsessed with movies which portray the woman MC in a highly specific job because the writers clearly think it's like "off-beat" and "quirky" but have no idea how the field works whatsoever.

i decided to try a romcom i somehow missed i the 2000s 'head over heels' and i got 3 and a half minutes in and we're introduced to the lonely MC with bad taste in men as evidenced by her extremely short list of ex boyfriends, including her first boyfriend when she was 11 or something because i guess that's still relevant in her adult life.

so she's resigned herself to never finding love and prefers to ignore men to focus all her energy into her career.

this job is immediately presented as though it's for spinsters with no hope of ever finding a man.

the mc's lesbian bestie (whose first line involves her being scolded for being too sexual in the workplace, but moving on) points out their colleagues as evidence that they're doomed to a romance-less, sexless life if they don't switch up their shared career path. the colleagues are three old women, so-dubbed "the menopause triplets":

these women are presented as if they have no idea what's going on at any given moment. this is 2001, and presumably this is an entry level job requiring low effort and no experience.

then their boss bursts into the room, unceremoniously bumping a large painting into the door jam and walls, announcing that it's a new project for our MC.

our MC is thrilled to see the painting. apparently it's a light in the daily slog at her dreary job for loser women with nothing going on in their lives.

And that job is? Conservator of paintings (specializing in Renaissance) at the New York City Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The painting being handled like an old couch on its way to the curb?

The Bacchanal of the Andrians by Titian.

Her lesbian colleague who is presumably also a a highly trained & skilled curator finds it depressing that the MC is so excited about the painting.

it's a quirk unique to this MC that she cares so much about paintings, in her department at the metropolitan museum of art, where her colleagues find all that art business rather dreary. because we all know that's what conservators in extremely competitive museum positions are like.

Today we were talking about how words can mean different things to different communities, and that people outside the community wouldn't understand. He's confused because Dean used to nest all the time when they were kids, and he's worried because he knows how important nesting is for hormone regulation in omegas, but every time he brings it up Dean just brushes him off. He comes to understand that the nests Dean used to make in the shitty motel rooms of their childhood weren't really for Dean; they were for Sam. Children with an omega parent need nests growing up, and in Mary's absence, Dean stepped up to the plate. So Sam starts to wonder how he can make Dean see nesting as something he does for himself, not others.

Then it turns out the whole time Dean was nesting, albeit he was doing it subconciously. His nest is just the Impala.

Ao3 Top Stats of All Time: Omegaverse Edition!

Thanks to the support I received on my 2025 Omegaverse Stats, I decided to do an all-time version! Listed below are the top alphas, betas, omegas, and ships of all time on ao3!

Characters who were most often tagged as an alpha within each ship are blue, omegas are purple.

Betas only go to 50 because of a lack of numbers.

I also made lists for the top 50 F/F ships, top 50 alpha females, and top 50 omega females!

My toxic trait is that I am far more interested in the socio-economic and geopolitical implications of ABO settings than the smut.

For example: I can't read any ABO AUs set in England or France because while I can suspend my disbelief far enough for a gender trinary set up, I can't suspend it enough to believe those two countries would still be distinct entities in a alternate history where Richard the Lionheart could have impregnated Philip II.

If there was a viable dynastic future with Richard, Philip would have climbed him like an oak and dragged him to the altar if he had to. It's a match that makes perfect sense from both their points of view: Philip gets Aquitaine back under French rule, the best general in Europe on his council, and a powerful check on the Angevins... then unexpectedly (after Henry the Young bites it) the entire Kingdom of England for his Capetian dynasty. Richard meanwhile gets to stick it to his father, secure Aquitaine's prosperity, and gets the leverage to start pushing for his mother's release. Then when Henry kicks the bucket Richard doesn't actually have to be King of England in anything but name: Philip can run the countries and unify the Crowns and what not while Richard runs off to go Crusading.

Plus they also like, loved each other and stuff and being able to get to be together long term instead of being torn apart by politics would have been cool. But I'm mainly obsessed with the historical and dynastic implications.

All this to say any ABO au set in England or France that doesn't have them united as a singular Anglo-Frank empire is doing it wrong.

The concept of A/B/O also introduces the question of what succession law would look like under a gender trinary. England historically used cognatic succession, where female scions and their descendants could inherit titles if there were no surviving males from the previous dynast’s line, whereas France used agnatic succession, where succession could only pass through male lines.

In this AU, it’s unlikely that an Anglo-Frank union could last due to differences in succession laws between the two realms. What would happen if an Alpha died without an heir? Would Betas be treated similarly to Alphas for succession purposes? Could succession pass through Beta or even Omega lines? Succession laws were quite difficult to change, with modifications to royal succession often resulting in civil and/or international wars.

So I see your A/B/O geopolitical hypothetical and raise you that while Philip WOULD climb Richard like an oak and bear him multiple viable heirs, the Anglo-Frankish Union wouldn’t last long due to differences in how the kingdoms would be inherited by the descendants of those multiple heirs. And with the complexities of succession laws in a gender trinary, the War of the Roses would only be more insane.

DC Omegaverse: OG Teen Titans Part 1

Victor Stone | Cyborg - Victor is one of the characters I could see as any gender, though I usually lean beta for him because I think it hits a nice beat with the conflict between his own passions and what his parents wanted for him, pursuing academics over athletics (football in particular I think would be an alpha-dominated sport, in-universe), as well as his issues with being seen as a science experiment rather than a person. (Even before The Incident.) Also I think betas are incredibly undervalued and under-used in the genre and that also fits him so well. Going specifically with my more detailed gender breakdowns, I think he's a high-level beta.

Koriand'r | Starfire - Kory is None of the Above! Part of Team Alien Genders, I haven't settled on the details of what her whole situation is, though I am leaning towards her pheromones, to humans, read "almost omega but a step to the left" to humans and physiologically I currently have her basically "non-omegaverse female" with maybe a few minor "modifications," for lack of a better term.

Raven - I think Raven is an alpha. I think it plays well with her ongoing fight for emotional control and also in my opinion subverts some appearances and expectations. There's a lot to play with there with gender and aggression and power and control that I have a lot of fun with. She is also a little bit to the left, because she is half human, half demon and that does impact it, but she did inherit her surface gender at least from her mother's humanity, even if the expression of it is influenced by the demonic nature from her father. Her personal expression of it is also influenced by her upbringing on Azarath, where there had been approximately a millennium of divergent social evolution, and thus social norms and gender norms are somewhat different from what exists on earth.

Garfield Logan | Beast Boy - I think Beast Boy is a beta. I don't have a whole lot to say about it Imma be honest, it's mostly vibes, I'm sorry.

Karen Beecher | Bumblebee - She's an omega. A black omega woman in STEMS. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Superheroics) She's bright and brilliant and ambitious and her story plays so well with the fictional intersectionality. Surprise surprise XD. Specifically, for Karen I like that she is very much her own person and hero while also having a long running relationship and marriage and I think that the balance of that suits well to an omega gender for her.

Joey Wilson | Jericho - Joey is an alpha from a family of alphas and everyone is always surprised when they find out. This is a decision partly fueled by my own genetics world-building (both parents are alphas, it would be very unlikely for him to be anything else, though not impossible) and partly by my fondness for alphas who "don't act like alphas" because I enjoy a nice mix of playing to and subverting expectations. Joey, as the very definition of "gentle giant" lends very well to the vibes of "chill alpha." I think partly as a deliberate choice to not be like his family. (Including Adeline. He loves his mother, he is not blind to her faults.)

it gets treated as this like stock fandom AU and i'll see people like 'i don't understand why anyone wants to read this' and i'm like yes that's bcos it's pretty intense* fetish content & you don't have the right assortment of fetishes for it? there's a bunch of other similar Stock Settings that just haven't breached containment.

*intense as in like, Density of fetish content involved rather than intensity of fetish if that makes sense?

SO i think i've observed 2 separate but related things going on:

firstly the aforementioned demographic of people who have somehow genuinely failed to clock that it's a kink thing

but also a second demographic of people who seem to have taken its like. prominence in fandom spaces as a sign that they're somehow 'expected' to like it? i've not really seen this attitude with any other kink.

ppl will talk about it the way they might talk about say high school/college AUs or coffee shop AUs which are very common and i guess are sometimes presented as things that everyone finds fluffy & relatable? when in reality it's more like idk. piss kink. it'd be pretty weird to read a piss kink fic and go 'ewww why does the author expect me to find piss sexy??' well they don't. they expect people who already think piss is sexy to read the fic.

(One of) The Gender Gradient(s)

So the way I conceptualize gender in my versions of omegaverse is not “three genders, two dynamics” because i hate myself and went the complicated route of “six cis genders” which is why I’ll be screaming a lot about linguistics because it messes up so much in terms of terminology. (See: my post about parental names and probably many more to come) 

So rather than two genders with three sub-categories of each, I think of each of the six combinations as its own separate gender concept. Omega males for instance, are not men who are also omegas. They are omega males.

The distinctions are hormonal.

Because even in our real world, there is no actual gender binary, it’s a spectrum made up of (among other things) hormone levels, namely estrogen and testosterone. And that spectrum exists in the omegaverse as well, side by side and interacting with another, related but separate hormonal spectrum, made up of three hormones that I have not yet actually named (because biochemistry is not my field at all) but have been referring to as A, B, and O respectively, and I think that gets the idea across fairly well. 

These three hormones exist on a spectrum, portrayed on the gradient as Red = Alpha, Blue = Beta, Yellow = Omega and people are hormonally distinct based on where on they fall on the spectrum.

the ranking of “high/mid/low” refers to the level of the hormone “A” present in the individual. [This is a concept I read in a fic several years ago, I’m looking for it currently and when I find it I’ll link it in a reblog] This for instance…

The first dot on the left would be a referred to as a mid or high-level alpha. Dot 2 - low-level alpha Dot 3 - mid-level beta or just beta, since they are v squarely in the center of the spectrum Dot 4 - low-level beta Dot 5 - high-level omega Dot 6 - low-level omega

Social expectations and perceptions of these differences vary between cultures and AUs.

Male/Female:

The testosterone/estrogen spectrum also exists and interacts with the A/O/B spectrum to produce each individual’s specific biological gender markers.

In the simplest terms possible, if you turned this gradient

vertical and moved it back and forth over the other gradient like a slider bar, the intersection point is an individuals hormone levels.

Also, male omegas and female alphas are dualsex (EDITED 07/29/25 to change intersex to dualsex)

The TLDR for this is that the differences between say, a low level alpha and a high level beta can be entirely physical; pheremonaly and instinctually the beta might even read as “more alpha”, just without alpha physiology.
