Serena blushed a little bit when she was offered to sit on the bed. He absolutely knows what he's doing here! ... but he also knows that she was going to agree, even despite the chairs. And, such, she shyly nodded and moved over to sitting on the bed with him. Sure the place was quaint by his standards, but she liked the coziness and intimacy of such a hotel. It gives such a different vibe than Hotel Richissime, after all.

Luckily talking about her battling and competitiveness gave a good distraction. While she did sense that hint of creeping aura before his pull back, that's not really enough to back her down. "Yeah, heh. I kinda got that reputation during my first run as Champion before my previous retirement. I'd go around and challenge anyone and everyone that thought they were strong enough to take me on. That's actually how I became friends with Hilda, Barry and Zinnia, funnily enough. Sometimes two of the four of us would meet, and, without a second word, we'd battle the day away and into the night over and over. If one of us brought a Legendary Pokémon with us, the other would, too... well, except for Barry but that's because he actively doesn't seek one out. Too into Crasher Wake and his dad to consider it. Still, we'd battle a ton and have a blast. Heck, even now, ever since I've come back to being Champion, the four of us duke it out a ton, but also Nemona and Leaf join in, too. Honestly, since then, it's felt as though my love of Pokémon and Pokémon battling has been supercharged, y'know?"

Serena giggled, but then brought herself back down to earth. She doesn't know why, but he always gets her like this, doesn't he? "Uh... well, actually, there's something that I wanted to share, but I'm... not sure how to word this. Just... promise me that you'll take this seriously, okay?"

Oh, boy.

"I've been meaning to talk to you about this, but... I've been kinda staying here a bit more so I can give my mom some privacy. A bit ago, I reconnected with our Yveltal, Lilian, after he turned into his active form. We talked things out and we're friendly again. I even sometimes spend time with his Murkrow, Corbin. Between hanging out with you, talking things out with Lilian, and going to therapy with Artemis, I've honestly been getting a lot better. I even had the courage to group up with Trevor and Tierno again like old times, and Shauna's going to join us next time now that she's back from Paldea. Really, I'm genuinely grateful for that and everything that you've done for me."

She paused. There wasn't really anything that she could do to propely

"... I've... been getting... a lot of dreams recently, and pointed ones, too. They've either been about my Calem... or about you." She sighed. "In regards to my Calem, I've been mostly getting dreams about the past... about our close friendship and rivalry after mom and I first moved here... and in the years since knowing each other. Some of them have been nice and friendly. Some romantic. Some... a bit more. I've also been getting dreams about the possibilities... some about finding some way to bring him back to life... or getting married... or spending our time together. It's... really made me realize how much I still miss him and how much he was such a part of my life."

"... and then I get dreams about you, too—"

Serena paused before quickly making a backpedal. "—n—not in the same way, to be clear! I—I don't have dreams about you in the same way." She shook her head. She... may have had one or two but not nearly as frequent or as detailed, and always strongly refuted. "Instead, it's been... about our own friendship and how nice it's been to have someone by my side like you... but, well, I've... also been getting horrifying what-if dreams. Mostly... I've been getting dreams about you possibly dying, too. Like, dreams of you succumbing to the same fate as my Calem, where Yveltal... drains you of your life or ends it in some other way.... How would I feel about that? How... horrifying something like that would be.... I would spend the time with you in my arms, crying and begging you not to go... not to leave me here all alone, only for it to be in vain. Maybe you'd give parting words, or crack one final joke about your own Serena... but it always ends the same — that you would die from the encounter... and that I... I would be left here once again without a friend and a neighbor. Luckily, I'd wake up and realize it was just a dream, but... it's made me think about our friendship a lot...."

She sighed. "I—I know this is weird and random, and I get it if I just creeped you out or something. I just... wanted to take the time to tell you and get if off my chest, y'know?"

Calem listened to the stories of her battling escapades with a curious smile, playfully rolling his eyes at the mention of Barry being too focused on Crasher Wake to focus on anything else. Some things never change across different universes, it seems.

“You know what that means, I gotta challenge you to a battle as well sooner or later. Definitely sooner rather than later, actually.” Really, the fact that they hadn’t battled yet was the anomaly here. Then again, their conversations usually tend to be about very serious topics that are kind of a downer, so that’s probably why the mood isn’t always right for competitiveness.

In fact, considering the first impression he had of Serena, seeing her smile like that, reminiscing about fun experiences with friends, made him happy as well. All in all, it was really nice to see that she was going to therapy, reconnecting with old friends and, in general, doing better after so many painful experiences. As she started talking about dreams, however, Calem’s smile dropped just slightly into a more serious, cautious expression, as he had a feeling that things were about to get heavy again.

(Thankfully, due to the way he was reclining, Serena would have to look over her shoulder to maintain eye contact, so he didn’t have to control his expressions as much. Even that was calculated!)

There wasn’t much that he could say as she described her dreams about her Calem. It was a feeling that he understood well, dreaming about a happy future with loved ones that have already passed, even knowing it’ll never actually happen. As the topic shifted to dreams she had about him specifically, though, his silence wasn’t that of an active listener anymore, but rather a reflection of something much more raw that he didn’t quite know how to put into words.

Guilt. It hurt to listen to her describe how much she’d miss him if he was gone, knowing that everything he had been hiding from her would only make that pain greater. As much as he was focused on keeping up the charade from the moment he arrived at the hotel, even having some fun by brushing up on his acting skills, now he found that he just didn’t have it in him to keep up the deception for very long.

“Don’t worry, I get it.” As Calem spoke, his gaze remained focused on the ceiling as he thought carefully about what to do next. As much as he understood that maintaining his secret was an impossibility in the long term, his rational side told him that breaking the news to Serena carelessly would devastate her even more. “It’s not something that creeps me out. I mean, as your friend, listening to you is the least I can do, right? And knowing you care about me this much… it’s nice, in a way.”

The mask was finally slipping, and Serena could notice just how distant Calem sounded when he was deep in thought like that. She wouldn’t have much time to dwell on it, though, as he sat back up with his signature winning smile that could dispel any worries.

“I’m a tough cookie, you know? You’re gonna be stuck with me for a while!” He let out a playful, boisterous laugh, the type of laugh that made him seem invincible. “But if we’re talking about dreams, then…”

Right, that might be a good way to lead the conversation in the right direction without giving too much away all at once.

“I have a certain… condition that messes with my sleep. Because of it, when I go to bed, I tend to have the same recurring nightmare in which I can’t move in any way or even see anything around me, and when that happens I end up unable to move in the morning for a really long time if someone doesn't wake me up.”

“...Well, I did teach my Pokémon to help with that, so it’s manageable, but it’s weird, right?” Still, isn't that really dangerous to someone who lives alone?
