Erik is seemingly able to appear and disappear out of nowhere, using that ability to stay close to Calem and lead him in the right direction without officially joining his team, and then allowed himself to be caught after a ferocious battle at the Tower of Mastery. Contrasting Calem’s usual intensity, Erik is a very quiet Pokémon, expressing himself through actions rather than words, but the two of them are meticulous, calculating planners, so they're easily able to synchronize their thoughts and feelings in order to achieve Mega Evolution.

His battle style is best described as efficient. Erik’s disaster-sensing ability has been honed to allow him to read his opponents’ actions ahead of time, giving him a nearly-unmatched reaction time, and his horn can be effectively used as a rapier to pierce through defensive barriers. Erik’s named after the legendary Phantom of the Opera himself, since Calem thought there was a resemblance between the Absol’s half-white fur and the character’s white half-mask. It does break the musician theme, but since it’s a musical reference it’s not that disconnected.

Eugene’s named after an actor known for his distinctive dancing style. It doesn’t really fit the theme, but Calem’s kind of a birdbrain, so chances are that he forgot there was a theme in the first place.

Prince is a little bit of a grumpy bear (grumpy bat?) who doesn’t like to be bothered unless he has work to do, napping during the day and being more active during the night, but he’s also known to act as a strict but fair mentor to less experienced Pokémon. Apparently, he and Calem have a very complicated history they’re still working through.

He’s an offensive powerhouse that overwhelms his opponents with destructive sound waves, having mastered a violent fighting style that not only causes injuries in the traditional sense but also causes sensory overstimulation and internal damage. As such, commanding him in battle requires extreme caution, and he won’t obey the orders of a trainer he perceives as weak. Since Calem’s excessively meticulous as a trainer, he instead prefers more controlled tactics, so Prince tends to primarily use his stealth, flying silently to strike his opponents from their blind spots with extreme precision and only using his more destructive attacks if necessary.

Prince is, in fact, named after the royal title, a nickname chosen by his original trainer, but Calem does appreciate how it still works for the music theme he has going on if you don’t think too much about it.

Shirley is named after the iconic singer, as Calem’s nickname habit was taken from his mother. Incidentally, her name is also a pun, but most people don’t get it since it doesn’t work on either of Calem’s native languages.

Name meanings

Touya Mizuki: Touya means fighter, a consistent theme across all of his canon names in different languages. In-universe, he's named like that because his parents wanted to give the image of a hardened, tough person who fights to get what he wants. Mizuki is written with the characters for water and moon, meaning the reflection of the moon on the water's surface, and figuratively referring to illusions. The two names, combined, have contrasting images, with his given name conveying the idea of violence while his surname conveys the idea of something harmless and incorporeal.

Calem / Emilio Campanelli: Calem means dove. As his canon name, it follows the theme of peace among the XY protagonists, with Calem and Serena referring to calm and serenity respectively, and Shauna, Tierno and Trevor's names meaning healthy, kind and curious. Emilio means rival, and shares the same etymological origin as the word emulate, as in someone who strives to measure up to another. It can also refer more negatively to a jealous person. Campanelli is a plural, diminutive form of campana, meaning bell, and it's typically a surname given to people who ring church bells. Calem’s eyes are a grayish blue, with a slanted shape that naturally gives him a sharp, focused expression. He’s a very expressive person, so his eyes tend to reflect his emotions quite easily and usually display a bright, cheerful glint to them, but in old pictures before he became a trainer the expression in his eyes looked oddly distant.

He has slit-shaped pupils, but it’s only noticeable if you look close. It’s a trait he shares with his brother.

When Yveltal wants to make their presence known, Calem’s eyes change to match the color of their eyes, becoming a much brighter blue that encompasses the whole sclera as well as the iris, with the pupils turning white. It’s a pretty handy visual sign that Calem’s not present, even if you’re looking right at him.

Yveltal’s dormant cocoon form was found by the descendants of the royal family of Kalos many centuries ago, who trapped it underground so that it could be used as an energy source to replicate the king’s power from the times of war, unwittingly delaying the deity’s cycle of reincarnation and setting events in motion for the Ultimate Weapon to end up in Team Flare’s hands as a dirty family secret. Conscious, but immobile in their current state and unable to escape without causing unnecessary destruction, Yveltal patiently waited and set events in motion so that they could get revenge on those who tried to use their power for personal gain, eventually projecting their will and conscience into a human vessel to clear the path for their awakening.

As the deity’s human incarnation, Calem shares a mental connection that allows them to work in unison as two parts of the same being, but for the purpose of fully blending in with humanity, Yveltal’s consciousness manifested as a subtle influence rather than completely overriding his identity. The closer he got to the Ultimate Weapon, the more Yveltal began to directly control him to lead him towards the right path, and once the dormant cocoon was freed, the deity’s body and mind merged together as one once more and Calem’s human form was discarded as an empty shell… but it seems that, for one reason or another, Yveltal has decided to continue inhabiting that human shell for the time being. Calem regards himself as a human that’s being possessed by an external force, but deep down he’s aware that he and Yveltal are one and the same.

In battle, their mere presence casts an oppressive aura over the battlefield that makes anyone, friend or foe, cower in fear, and their fabled life-draining abilities and rotting touch allow them to turn any living being into an empty husk in a matter of seconds. If sufficiently injured, they’ll start stealing energy from their surroundings indiscriminately until the whole area becomes a wasteland, which isn’t actually something they want. As the deity’s human form, Calem can transform into Yveltal at the cost of losing his consciousness or, alternatively, briefly separate from the deity so that the two of them can coexist at the same time, but this is tantamount to ripping his soul out of his body. Both options hurt.

Yveltal has been known by many different names over the course of history, as no matter the time or culture, everyone knows about death. While the name ‘Yveltal’ is already specific enough as is, if they need to be told apart from Calem specifically, they have been known to go by Thanatos, as it’s a name given to them by humans in the past which they actually like. Calem refers to them derisively as ‘the bird’, though.

Rain Dance - The user summons a heavy rain that falls for five turns, powering up Water-type attacks. The rain also lowers the power of Fire-type attacks. Dragon Tail - The target is knocked away, and a different Pokémon is dragged out. In the wild, this ends a battle against a single Pokémon. Hyper Voice - The user attacks by letting loose a horribly loud, resounding cry.

One of the guardian deities of Unova as well as the god governing over the concept of ideals. Zekrom spent countless years sealed within the Dark Stone and recovered his physical form when Touya accepted his title as the hero of ideals, the deity's chosen trainer both gifted and burdened by the nature of their bond, the two of them then joining forces to save the region from Team Plasma the first time around.

Zekrom was originally only a part of a whole being, and for most of his existence he has only been defined by a single concept, so he has a hard time adjusting to the current times where the region doesn’t need the deities' presence to inspire order and authority. After defeating Team Plasma, Touya decided to allow him to roam the world freely so that he can learn more about ideals from all sorts of people as well as define his existence outside of his role as a guardian deity, but as the two of them have a telepathic bond and instinctively know what the other is thinking, Zekrom will always appear if Touya calls.

He has a rather harsh, judgmental personality, and isn't very talkative either. Apparently he's always thinking about what people could be like, rather than what they are objectively, and as such he's usually disappointed because others can’t meet his lofty standards. Since Touya is a rather timid guy that would rather avoid confrontation if he has the option, they seem to have different opinions on what a hero of legend should be like, and he’s taken the responsibility to keep Zekrom from indulging too much in fantasies.

In battle, Zekrom is far beyond the scope of an average Pokémon, completely incinerating the battlefield with lightning in a matter of seconds, and with enough muscle mass to overwhelm most opponents by pure physicality alone. He's actually quite skilled in melee combat, using a combination of electrified punches and grapples to fight opponents that don't succumb to raw strength alone, and his tail can be used as a bludgeoning weapon as well as a generator. Apparently, he can take over Touya's body to use those same fighting skills, but doesn't like doing so as it means allowing Touya to slack off on his self-defense training. For long-distance travel, he covers himself in a massive raincloud that completely obscures his form.

Zekrom refuses to be nicknamed due to a matter of practicality. Unlike other Pokémon, who have to be told apart from other, identical members of the same species, he's the only Zekrom there is, so that name alone already identifies him well enough. Also, he has access to all of Touya's thoughts, so he knows his trainer would name him something corny like Colby or Sobek.
