I was surprised when Hestia called to me, & I worried I would let her down. I'm not good at homemaking. I'm not good at belonging. My parents never taught me about care, safety, and rest. They didn't know how to nourish & tend to themselves, much less their children

I told her that. I told her that I struggle to cook, that I forget to eat. That I'm often too tired or too sick to clean. That I don't remember how to feel at home in my body & in this world. I told her that I couldn't do it, though I desperately wanted to

But she told me that every step on the journey home is sacred to her—however faltering, fearful or imperfect those steps may be. She said she reached out to me because of my commitment to start where I am, use what I have, and do what I can

So long as we are trying to nurture ourselves & our loved ones, we have already made Hestia proud 🏠 She loves trauma survivors, watches over our recovery every day, & blesses us on the long and difficult road home

Hestia to me

She is as gentle, warm, and calming as the flames in the hearth that she represents. She is the feeling of sitting by a fire in a cozy chair wrapped in a soft blanket, drinking hot chocolate out of a favorite mug while reading a favorite book. She is the joy of dinner dates, of coffee with friends, of holiday gatherings, of shopping for new furniture, of putting clean sheets on the beds, of having fresh flowers in the vase on the dining table.

She is the feeling of coming home after a journey, of seeing loved ones after a period of absence.

She is home itself. She is the security and comfort of home, the safety of those who dwell within.

She's like the loving aunt who always remembers your favorite treats. When a homemaker rests at the end of another day of housekeeping and treats themselves, she approves.

She loves seeing our family happy together. She smiles when our household asks for her blessings.

When we leave for yet another traveling adventure, she blows us kisses and sends us off with her love. And when it's time for us to return, she is here to welcome us home.

She is an eternal fire, forever radiating warmth and ease.

She is love. The love of family. The love of home.

Hey Mom aka An Open Letter to Hestia 🔥🔥

Things have been kinda hard lately, ya'know? My chronic pain has been flaring and my mental issues have been quite intense. My home has fallen to disarray and I've been quite embarrassed because after all, you're the Goddess of home & hearth.

But you're also the Goddess of warmth and family and happiness in the home and so even I'm in too much pain to clean, nothing is stopping me from lighting a candle and dedicating its delicious aroma to you while I spend quality time with my little family.

And I am ever so thankful to be your child, Hearth Fire 🔥🔥

An idea for modernising hearths

Something I saw some up recently in a conversation was the topic of hearths. Most of us don’t have access to one, and if you do, you’re lucky and should totally use that for worship.

Hestia and her hearths were very important and even key to life in Ancient Hellas. She even has a role in politics, as the one who governs over the state. She is the one many give to first and last. Hestia plays a huge role in our religion and she unites many, if not all, of us. Her hearth keeps us warm and comforted. 

This is where my simple idea comes in: tealight burners as a mini hearth. They’re small, easy to disguise, and practical. Tealight candles are cheap and therefore good for us on the poorer side. If it’s safe, due to the fact that it’s an oil burner, you could burn oil as an offering to Hestia. It’s not something that screams pagan and therefore it’s very easy to disguise. The use of fire also connects back to Hestia and can bring a sense of home, community, and warmth.

Overall, I believe that these small structures can improve our worship. I wish I could have a hearth, but this will do. I know some burn candles and maintain that fire for Hestia. I think that this will be like that, but with the ability to burn oils in her honour.
