The Final Implosion of Romancelandia (maybe)

So for those of you who don’t follow Drama on Twitter, Romancelandia basically imploded, possibly finally, when the BIGGEST industry association, RWA, decided to sanction Courtney Milan, former chair of their ethics committee, following a complaint against her for calling out racism. It should be noted that Courtney is Asian-American and was calling out the writing of a Chinese character by a white author. RWA have now backtracked and said they’re temporarily reinstating Courtney and seeking legal advice. (that might have been a good idea BEFORE they sanctioned her, but what do I know) HUGE names have started publicly tearing up their RWA memberships. Romancelandia is basically splitting in two. On one side… Nice White Ladies who get upset when their racism is called out. On the other side… everybody else. RWA have apparently decided to come down on the NWL side. Which is… A Decision. I’ve never been an RWA member: I’m a member of Romance Writers of Australia which is an entirely separate org. And now, I can 100% promise I never, ever will be.

Putting this on my author blog since it’s relevant… I was a RWA member for …two? years? but let my membership lapse after it became obvious that I wasn’t utilizing my membership at all. I hate mailing lists/discussion loops, so I never read them, and I was basically on a break from publishing so I wasn’t entering the (shoddily run) contests or going to conferences or anything like that. I had started to wonder if letting it lapse was the best idea, since I’m getting back into publishing, but after all this, I’m kind of glad I did. The silver lining is that I found out through the discussion around it about Novelists, Inc., which looks like it might be a better fit anyway, and the President-Elect is a former RWA member who has been vocally protesting the current trashfire, so at least she’s on the right side of that one. It’s uh, it’s a whole thing though.
