Maryland will become the first US state to ban surveillance pricing in retail stores, after passing Protection from Predatory Pricing Act.
Jesus fucking christ that this exists in the first place
I WAS FUCKING WONDERING WHAT THOSE DIGITAL PRICE TAGS WERE ABOUT SUDDENLY i had hoped they were so the workers didn't have to finagle those little papers into the slider part anymore 😭
Hi, yes, that is the OFFICIAL excuse made to me by the guy replacing the paper tags with digital ones at my local Walmart, but the end goal is to remove the numbers off the shelf entirely, replacing them with QR codes that you have to scan with the app…. Which requires your login information….. and also stores your card information so even if you didn’t use your Walmart account at the physical checkout, if you used a card they recognize, they assign that purchase to your Walmart account purchase history.
I explained very clearly to the manager my issue with the meat section not having the price tags listed, and they claimed it was only going to be for the meat, since meat is by weight, and the price of each item is printed on the packs of each item.
Sure. That’s how they get their foot in the door. Fast forward not even two weeks, and here we are:
Bar codes. No prices, no item descriptions. No price stickers on the individual items. Heck, not even the name of the item that is SUPPOSED to be there.
No. The only way to see the price is to scan it on your phone app, which is also recording what you looked at recently, as a way of gauging what you might be looking for in the future.
So here’s what we’re gonna do gang:
Every time you go into a store that has implemented these price-less tags:
Take 1-3 items up to the cash register. Ask the cashier for the price, or hit the price check item on the self checkout, which will likely call over the attendant.
Express that you didn’t actually want it, you just couldn’t see on the shelf how much it was.
POLITELY, AND WITH A THANK YOU FOR THE PRICE CONFIRMATION, Give the items to the cashier or attendant to put back.
When they inevitably try to push the app, politely decline. If pressed for why not, say you don’t want to have to carry your phone in-hand the whole time you are shopping in order to see how much things cost. (Not having cell service or data to use the app is NOT a valid excuse, as stores already often have complimentary WiFi AND more stores will provide WiFi rather than give up on this push for surveillance pricing)
If it’s a shelf-stable item, the cashier will have to set it aside, taking up room in their limited operating space, and eventually pass it off to someone to put in a holding area to put back later. If it’s a fridge/freezer item, it might have to get tossed due to food product sale regulations.
In either case, you are making it a pain in the ass for them to have these digital bar codes. Tie up the checkouts. Give the employees more busywork that the company has to pay them to do. Hurt their bottom line having to toss the pint of ice cream you carried around in your cart for 20 minutes before giving it back to the cashier.
Yes, call your reps. Yes, push for more legislation like this in more places. But also take an extra minute out of your shopping trip to MAKE IT HURT for companies to pull this shit.
Emphasizing what eliptic said: BE POLITE AND SAY THANK YOU TO THE CASHIER.
They have no control over this. They don't want this. They are threatened with firing or at least a cut to hours if they don't push you to get a membership card or app or whatever.
Do NOT TAKE IT OUT ON STORE EMPLOYEES.
I've been real busy lately because it's December and I work at the post office, so of course I am
But that doesn't mean I can't show up with an unprompted PSA
Hey! Have you ever mailed a letter to Santa Claus? Have you ever wondered what exactly happened to that letter? Well wonder no longer! If it had a stamp and a return address, then odds are that it ended up on the USPS's Operation Santa page!
Every year, the USPS collects letters to Santa Claus, and processes them to black out any identifying information. Last names, addresses, things like that. Then, the letters are posted on the Operation Santa webpage and people can adopt the letters.
Once you adopt a letter, you can buy gifts for them, wrap them up, and package them. Then you get a barcode from the website, and bring them to a post office. The clerk there will scan the barcode, which prints out a label with the address on it, and sends out the gift.
It's anonymous on both ends, and is generally just. A really nice thing to do.
I highly recommend it if you have some money to spare this year and want to give a kid a moment of magic this year
It's one of those things that the post office just happened to be positioned to do, and ended up knocking it out of the park. Unfortunately, I don't think they advertise this nearly well enough, and most letters end up going unanswered
Hopefully, a few more will be answered this year
Almost forgot to add a link!
Adopt a child's letter to Santa this holiday season with the USPS Operation Santa® program. Spread holiday cheer and help make a child's hol
Definitely donate cash if you can, because food banks can make it go a lot farther. $25 at my local bank is estimated to cover over 60 meals.
Goodnight, Sweet Prince (of Darkness) 🦇💔
RIP Ozzy 😢
One thing I've seen people accuse Sabrina Carpenter (and... a million other vocalists of) is queerbaiting and it's so weird because you really, really cannot queerbait with real people. Queerbaiting is a marketing tactic used to gain the viewership of a certain audience while also humiliating them (BBC Sherlock simultaneously teasing and mocking fans for wanting gay characters). It's harmful because it humiliates people for the crime of wanting to be represented. An artist, whose art is based around themselves, cannot do that.
There's also nothing to gain from an artist coming out as queer. Like, Demi Lovato came out as nonbinary and that didn't suddenly turn more artists nonbinary. Chappell Roan didn't turn anyone into a lesbian, nor is she lesbianbaiting like the "Roan is bi and pretending to be leabian for attention" conspiracy theorists claim.
If we're talking about making the art itself more accessible to queer people, that can easily be done by cishet artists. Hozier is well-known for his gender-neutral lyrics.
Idk i just think people feel way too entitled to strangers. The parasociality is real.
I'm a bisexual woman who found the Taste music video hot. Send help.
What do you think? The blurry line between the artist and the art in music make this a more complex topic.

sorry i meant to answer this sooner but it's just been mulling in my head this one... i had to think on it a bit like i have my answer but sometimes i gotta let it cook yk
i think you have it right on the money like it's so so so weird to say an artist is "queerbaiting" and frankly it's very fucking harmful. like, let's look at billie eilish for example. before coming out, she had gotten a MASSIVE hate train for the lost cause music video. so many people were saying she was queerbaiting when in reality she just hadn't come out or maybe she didn't even know yet. and even if she didn't come out to be honest, all of it was unwarranted because why does an artist have to explain a girls sleepover to yall. like yeah they're talking shit they're getting real close SO WHAT. why is it owed to you for artists to baby you through every single step. grow up. talk to a real person
like a lot of these people seem a bit too online cuz like... in some of these people's eyes it's like oh being queer is like this hot trendy thing that the internet eats up but in reality like there's still so so SO much hate and discrimination we as a community have yet to overcome and being queer can put a massive target on your head. and people's entitlement of celebrities can go way too fucking far to the point they forget that.
and let's be for real even if they do come out as queer... like they tore demi lovato back into the closet. chappell is CONSTANTLY being scrutinized for ANY SIGNS of not being a lesbian. and even if they are bi, like let's look at doechii for people invalidating her bisexuality, or billie (even though she's unlabelled) for dating a man after coming out.... i think anyone who is perceived as a "woman" by the general public is already being looked at on a microscope but if they're queer. Oh Fucking Boy. that's why it's brave to come out! because it fucking sucks! everyone is looking at you to "prove" your queerness, even if they had bitched at you for acting "gay" (which honestly a lot of "queerbaiting" can come down to just harmful stereotyping) before you came out!
also gonna be so real. i'm like 70 percent sure hozier is queer but i don't follow hozier enough to know for sure. like that's what i thought but now that you say that i'm like. wait. like it's none of my business but if he said it then like i don't wanna be like wooo ally yk.... it's fine anyways the point is yes gender neutral lyrics!!!!! like it's not necessary bc it is the artist's art but i think it's really great cuz it's like a free for all like you can truly project anyone into the song so it's kinda like diversity win by default?
anyways you're so real for the taste mv like well first of all. i love women covered in blood. i love women killing. i love women. that's why i watch yellowjackets. and why are yall complaining. sabrina and jenna are so hot and they KISS!!!! i don't CARE if they're queer or not this is AWESOME and why should being straight stop two beautiful women from kissing???? also they're actresses????? they're telling a story???????? and also they're hot????????? so like exactly. case closed.
anyways in conclusion real people can't queerbait and every time y'all accuse a real person of queerbaiting an angel loses its wings. and honestly some "queerbait" is also just like hot. like taste mv? lost cause mv? ok more for me ig! and thank you again manchild anon <3
God forbid a woman do ANYTHING. God forbid a woman has fun with her sexuality while shes young! God forbid a woman who is known for her more scandalous songs makes a fun album cover! God fucking forbid a woman posts a quick video explaining she doesn't support trump or ICE! God forbid a woman speaks up! God forbid a woman stays quiet! God for-fucking-bid a woman exists in the public eye, or is perceived at all.
God forbid a woman exists in a way that doesnt represent every single other woman. You have to be sex positive! But oh my god you have young fans!!! Don't pose like that! It isn't a reflection of ME and MY life! People obviously equate what you do to what every woman wants, and that's entirely YOUR fault!!! Why spend my precious time educating the minority of people when you could just sit still and be quiet.
God forbid a woman wants to clarify something in a quick video! Because thats SOOOO much different than putting "I don't support trump" in your bio, right??? I mean yeah everyone is attacking you because they misconstrued an earlier statement about how you don't like stuff both candidates are doing, and CLEARLY that means theyre both equally evil, but come on!! You should post a ten minute dissertation on your politics, even if you have trouble putting it into words and it's a deeply emotional topic! And also, CLEARLY when you, an artist who is famous for QUEER POP, said "people like us" while gay people are under attack, you meant people with little money!!! And how dare YOU, someone who had very little money a few years ago, say THAT!!! I mean, you could've just sat still and been quiet.
People will hate women for anything.
This is what all the discourse surrounding Rachel Zegler and Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter and idk like 5 other currently popular women sound like to me
ICON
btw that is the real OPM email address if any of yall wanna spam it
in some way, Billie Eilish is emo, Chappell Roan is punk, and Sabrina Carpenter is goth
I will elaborate in a reblog when asked
Okay I can understand Billie being Emo and I guess Chappell being punk (since punk is and I know I’m wayyy oversimplifying it) going against the mainstream but I need an explanation for Sabrina
Sabrina Carpenter and Laufey tbh
much of goth relies on throwback (if you've seen the Victorian era craze you'll understand) because part of goth being about finding something to appreciate in the midst of decay and destruction is all that effort to look back and salvage what's left of that past, and rightfully so, in an era where our past is constantly being erased in real time
Sabrina has revivals of old Hollywood in her current era, Laufey brought back esrly 20th century tradpop and jazz to our century's mainstream audience when it's been reduced to upper-class niches here and there for the last few decades
they are not into the horror aesthetics but they're like if the spectral axis of goth and prep rejoin their distant ends into a circle
re Chappell being punk, it shows after all in her choice of including drag queens in performances, choosing to base her makeup on clowns because the straight assholes in her hometown called queer people clowns, and most of all being open about her own queerness and struggles with an industry that steps on artists
in the defence of AOTY
y’all’s uproar about these big 3 category Grammy winners is just reaffirming the idea that Black artists have to work 10x as hard for scraps.
AOTY after a 20+ year solo career and nearly 30 year industry career that broke (and still is breaking down) barriers for all types of artists is the least that the Academy could give her. Her album shines light on one of the most overlooked and under appreciated aspects of Black American history, music history, and the industry’s treatment of those that drive innovation and creativity. This album brought together artists, writers, and producers, that probably would’ve never received the proper recognition at all, let alone from the Academy.
I don’t care what white woman you stan, but for people who are always screaming to “open the school” and for people to get educated, the moment that a piece of history is dropped right in front of you, y’all hide behind your ignorance and unwillingness to learn.
Ignorance might be bliss but there will come a point that some albums in that category will be forgotten in 10 years time. That cannot be said about Cowboy Carter.

Wrote about the recent annoying trend of every popular female artist being dubbed an industry plant.
Recently female artists have been having a moment. Sabrina Carpenter’s singles “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” have proven to be hits
