Theres an older movie scene that makes the rounds on Tumblr as a gif, of a woman crawling under a man's arm upset as they sit next to each other, tucking herself into his side and pulling her legs up to be as small as possible against him. She tucks her skirt under her knees, I think it's in color?

I don’t think people have realized the absolute bombshell implication of the Dark World we see in Chapter 5.

Let me contextualise a bit.

Way back in Undertale, the only contact the monsters had with the surface world was from anything or anyone that fell through the one-way barrier under Mt Ebott, including any junk people threw away.

Alphys in particular was a huge fan of trashy human media that was literally found in the waterfall garbage area. She’s the one that drew up concept sketches for her friend in the human fan club who eventually ended up as Mettaton, and presenting him as a robot with a soul is what got her working for Asgore. Alphys didn’t actually end up making an artificial soul, but Asgore was impressed enough to hire her as Royal scientist, or at least he was just looking for a replacement after the old one [DATA EXPUNGED]. This is the thing that lead to the creation of the amalgamates and Flowey, which means this bottleneck of musty old human media resulted in the events of Undertale’s story happening as we know it.

But despite humans and monsters living alongside each other in Deltarune, the setting of Hometown still seems to be cut off from the rest of the world, including any humans other than Kris (which should include Japan considering Hometown seems to take place in the states, unless this is a fictional composite Japanifornia-style which I really don’t think is the case)

Remember that Queen can’t access the internet, Tenna can only play reruns, and we’ve yet to see any contact from the outside world since the start of the story. Though we can hear it, judging from Onionsan’s story or Susie hearing the song from across the waters.

We know this outside world should exist thanks to the accounts of the characters, plus Carol’s katana, Asriel’s mspaint videogame ideas, Alphys’s anime reviews and Berdly being Berdly all suggest the same type of media exists in Deltarune’s world. Though considering Alphys liked Mew Mew 2 enough to introduce it to Asgore, either the sequel series is far batter in this world. or something very very wrong has happened for Alphys to think that shit is cinema.

I joke of course, (remember the Bad Opinion Zone from Hotland?), but there’s more.

Undyne’s perception of humans as member of the Royal Guard right up until we befriend her in the underground was shaped by Gerson’s old stories as well as Alphys showing her ‘human history documentaries’ aka shonen anime. And she was far more devastated at the idea anime wasn’t real than anything else Alphys confessed on the route to True Pacifist.

And the NEO vessel, which greatly parallels Mettaton NEO from the No Mercy route, exists as it does in a world without Alphys being able to design a robotic body for her friend based on their shared interests of human media… only that can’t be the case here unfortunately. If Alphys couldn’t sketch a glamorous humanoid form for a friend who admired humanity, then who made NEO? I have my guesses, but nothing’s been confirmed yet.

As the citizens of the Underground were influenced by the ancient prophecy, memories of old, and modern-day shovelware, Hometown has its fair share of pop culture… only Alphys, the primary character responsible for sharing the so-called ‘awful cartoons’, doesn’t have the same impact here. And Undyne and Mettaton lead very different lives, and aren’t exactly better off because of it.

The one exception is Asgore, who actually seems to have enjoyed her recommendation, when it took until the end of True Pacifist for Alphys to tell him what can be defined as a cartoon with gun’s slash swords.

That’s right folks, the biggest link towards understanding the connections within the worlds of Undertale and Deltarune hinges on anime being real.

Look y'all, this reveal means so much to me. So many times in movies these days there are big reveals for the audience’s benefit that mean absolutely nothing in the context of the story or to the characters in it. I’m talking the Thanos cameo in the Avengers’ stinger, I’m talking Benedict CumberKhan in Star Trek, I’m talking about every hackneyed “This character is actually this other character” when in universe nobody knows nor cares about their true identity.

But here? This reveal? This is a Big Reveal for us, Peter B Parker, and Miles, all on different levels. We and Peter both know Doc Ock is a portly dude, not a woman. We know the name Octavius… Otto Octavius. But when she says her name is Olivia Octavius we’re clued in to the fact that Doctor Octopus is a woman in this universe. And she has Peter captive.

Miles, if he was paying attention in science class earlier in the movie, would have known her name was Olivia Octavius, but that doesn’t mean anything to him, why would it? Liv has apparently been very good about keeping her supervillainy a secret. She’s in educational videos shown in high-schools. So to Miles, the reveal here is this scientist lady, who he knew enough about to know was the head scientist at Alchemax, is a supervillain. He gets the reveal a second or two after Peter.

And the movie? It was dropping hints the entire time, confident in our expectations blinding is to the truth. Olivia’s name was partially visible when Miles got to science class. Her glasses are octagonal. The lights in her lab are octagonal. We know she’s working with the Kingpin. Why wouldn’t she be a supervillain? Because she’s hot? Hell, Peter even says he needs to reexamine his internal biases. Maybe he was telling us that we should too.

It’s a reveal for us, and for our heroes. It means something, both in-universe and out. And that makes it infinitely better than other similar reveals.

The storyteller side of me wants Kris to be a genuine antagonist, I WANT them to be a kid that made some really hateful and stupid choices that ended up getting people hurt, and now has to deal with the consequence of being forcibly injected with a conscience that says, "Hey maybe dont fucking be hateful????"

The shitposting side of me wants them to be just, like...stupid??? A genuinely stupid teenager? They were dissociating and made a deal with some weird shadow man in the forest, and now sometimes their 'free will' isn't theirs anymore, but its also better at dating/friendships, so big-L win???
