Rhamphotheca
The Rhamphotheca is the keratin covering of the bird’s beak, also known as the beak sheath.
The upper part is called the rhinotheca and the lower part the gnathotheca.

I think I might have seen a juvenile eagle last week down by the lake… maybe. We’ve been enjoying our nearly daily sightings of the peregrine falcons too. About nesting time for the Cooper’s Hawk we tracked last year… we should go down to the river and see if we can find them again.

Argentavis magnificens (literally “magnificent argentine bird”)
… is the largest flying bird ever discovered. This bird, sometimes called the Giant Teratorn, is an extinct species known from three sites from the late Miocene of central and northwestern Argentina, where a good sample of fossils have been obtained. The estimate span was 7 – 7.5 m (~23 ft.), height ca. 1.5 m (5’6”) and the mass approx. 72 kg (~ 155 lbs).
Comparison with extant birds suggests it laid one or two eggs with a mass of somewhat over 1 kg (smaller than an ostrich egg) every two years. Climate considerations make it likely that the birds incubated over the winter, mates exchanging duties of incubating and procuring food every few days, and that the young were independent after some 16 months, but not fully mature until aged about a dozen years. Mortality must have been very low; to maintain a viable population less than about 2% of birds may have died each year…

As the collector notes on her extensive page, Hummingbird jewelry like this was put on show at the London International Exhibition of 1872 by the jewelry firms Ward and Co. and A. Boucard.
That the Victorians’ love for natural history should extend as far as pinning a bird’s head to your dress may be a bit bizarre, but should come as no surprise to those of you who have seen their elaborate bird decorations popular as millinery ornaments, scarab beetle jewelry, or the fascinating taxidermy displays common in wealthy households. I think they are utterly beautiful and would die to have one in my collection!

"For a BBC program about penguins called "Penguins - Spy in the Huddle', a special camera was designed to look like a penguin egg. After placing the egg-cam amidst a penguin colony, it was met by a curious striated caracara who eventually snatched the device and took flight. With the falcon's ascension into the air, the egg-cam managed to capture some stunning aerial shots of the penguin colony below—the first video of its kind to be filmed by a bird."

hey guys! decided to make this blog just to indulge myself, since there don't seem to be many (if any at all?) that are focused on ornithology/research itself and gritty bird weirdness instead of parrots doing people things. i'll make a real introductory post later. for the time being:
excessive gore will be tagged as "gore" and "tw: gore". otherwise, animal violence is natural and not generally unsettling; i'll assume everyone has their big girl undies on.
the ask and submit boxes are always open. i'm happy to answer general or biological questions about birds, wild and domestic, but i'm just a college student! if you suspect something is wrong with a pet, take it to a professional before asking some chump on tumblr.
i try to be meticulous about sourcing, but sometimes it's hard. i'm going to maintain a "source unknown" tag -- if you're savvy and know where anything in there came from, please shoot me a message and help me give credit!
i'm 19 years old and vultures are my absolute favourite.
i'm also probably going to start having night terrors over the fact that "ornithology" is taken by a hipster travel blog with two (2) posts that hasn't been updated in over a year.
