Someone pointed out that I forgot to make a pinned post. Uh, oops? Hi, Otterly here. Like the bio says, I’m a Jewish, Veteran, Husband, father of three, cybersecurity guy by day and writer by night (mostly, but not entirely, NSFW). And furry, but if the PFP and “cybersecurity guy” didn’t tell you that then I don’t know what to tell you.

Writings are mostly Urban Fantasy, LitRPG, and Transformation themed. My NSFW side does a lot of Harem and Hypnosis, though I always focus on consent and healthy relationships within that.

on the topic of disabled characters, though, i think a LOT of artists give characters mobility aids that their character wouldn't actually benefit from using.

i'm sort of having a mild brain fog moment rn so i can't fully articulate what i'm on about, but i think a lot of able-bodied artists view things like canes and crutches as interchangeable. and they often don't know enough about the wide range of mobility aids to make an informed decision about what their character might actually use based on their disability

i also think that aids like walkers and rollators are sort of viewed as "cringe" on some level, and many people view them to be "just for old people," so many artists will opt for giving a character who has full-body pain and fatigue a cane (which, in many cases, can potentially WORSEN full-body pain) instead. and a lot of people don't realize that most wheelchair users are able to walk, so they don't consider it an option for characters with chronic pain

idk it's kind of frustrating. i've genuinely never, ever seen a character that uses a rollator before. not once. i cannot name a single one. i know of multiple ocs who are described to have full-body pain, dizziness, and fatigue that are drawn as cane users and are never shown with wheelchairs or walkers, though

it's also sort of sad? i've been diagnosed since i was twelve years old, and i only heard of rollators LAST YEAR. and that was only because i saw one irl and immediately asked what it was. i wonder how many disabled people out there don't even know it's an option solely because they're completely underrepresented online and in media

if you're a creative with a disabled oc, PLEASEEE check out this link. it's a very nice and detailed guide for telling which mobility aids suit someone's needs best. it's incredibly important to make the right choice for your character! mobility aids tell you a LOT about someone's lived experience. picking the right one will communicate to your audience #1 what your character goes through #2 that you UNDERSTAND what your character goes through!

I have seen EXACTLY one character in fiction who uses a Rollator in over 40 years on this Earth, that one being in harem fiction (shout out to Quaranteam: Project RED, written by S Bradshaw in the Quaranteam universe by Corrupting Power). I had never heard of them before.

When I finished book one of my main story, I decided to take a break for a bit before starting book 2. About two weeks later, I had an INCREDIBLY vivid dream in which most of the main cast of said story sat me down to ask what happened next. I started writing on the story again the next day.

short form writers look at people writing 100k+ fics as though this is some sort of talent given as part of a fae bargain, that the commitment required shows some sort of ungodly mental fortitude.

this post has been making the rounds again and i just want to state for the record that it is a fucking delight to read in the tags all the random things people research for their fanfic and art. fandom, i love you. i love you with your flood maps and medical procedures and tentacle biology and historical fashion and traditional handcrafts and conlangs and urban geography and literally everything else. i am completely sincere about this. the enthusiasm with which people embrace detailed, deep, and often obscure research, just because they want to get it right, because they want to create something rich and interesting, it makes me feel better about the world. i adore it.

The Quaranteam writers room is one of the most ludicrously over-skilled groups of people I’ve ever worked with, and it is for something that is at heart harem porn.

Doctor, Lawyer, Cybersecurity. Mental health counselor, brewer, college professor, real-world scientists. Veterans from two branches of service and at least one active duty. Representatives in six countries and ten time zones. We’ve done epidemiological breakdowns, logistics planning, sociological group interaction mapping, trauma recovery timelines, and research that involved contacting a reader that lives legitimately three blocks from the real-world location something was occurring (that none of us lived within a hundred miles of).

I cant go to my local libary anymore because last year when I stopped by a librarian was reading a book I wrote under a pen name years ago. This book sold under 10k copies and I've literally only heard people talk about this book online *if* I went looking for it so I went up to them and tried to start a conversation like "oh hey I've heard of that book is it good?" Like hoping for some real feedback and she goes "yeah I love reading things by queer writers" and in a moment of terror I was like "oh but- hold on, I thought the author was some old hetero white guy?!" A thing I thought because I used my own dead grandpa's picture for the author pic because grandpa never had internet. I fake looked it up and was like "yeah if he was queer its not public?" And without looking up this absolute unit goes "oh the author bio is obviously fake. I'd bet my left leg the author is a west coast millennial non-binary queer who has never lived on the east coast." And then proceeded to rattle off a dozen linguistic flourishes that are specfic to the pacific northwest that are in the book and several that are nearly ubiquitous in the state where I said my pen name lives that are somehow completely absent from the book.

So you know. Got read for fifth and didn't even find out if she liked it.

In one of my series, a wish results in a magic mansion springing up beachfront in Washington State near Seattle. By context clues and one (1) hard number I gave, one of my readers pinpointed it to within a kilometer and property value within rounding error of my back end calculations.

Note that at the time of writing I lived there, the location being one I scouted personally.

idk if this is controversial or not, but I really like when non-professional writing like fic has hints of author bleedthrough when it comes to like, what different people assume is common knowledge. Like sometimes I’ll be reading a fic and it’ll just be obvious that the person writing it is either obsessed with medicine or has been to medical school, because they’ll use terms that are just a shade too technical without explaining them. It’s never the super specific stuff that they’d know other people are unaware of, it’s always the things that once you’ve known it for a while you forget it’s niche knowledge. It’s fun because as a fanfic reader it reminds me of how this is a fun hobby community, where everyone has their own thing going on outside of fandom. Everyone’s got their own specialties and they can’t help but write that into their work sometimes

Fam, some jobs are like being a firefighter. 90% of the time you're not doing anything that important, but by golly, when they need you, they need you.

Some jobs, you can fuck around for six hours a day, but you know what you're doing so well that the work you do in two hours would take somebody else ten.

Some jobs, you spend those two hours preventing other people from making mistakes that would take 100 hours to fix if you weren't there to steer them right.

So don't buy into the idea that if you're not working 480 minutes a day, you're not doing enough to get paid a day's wages. That's the capitalism talking.

autumn and the spouses were talking about the odd perception of the miraculous fandom as an oversexualized place so i ran the numbers and. come now. let's pick up the pace.

average among the six non-miraculous fandoms* was 20.679% and a one-tailed significance test for the hypothesis that miraculous is less than the average had a p-value < .00001 which is. pretty conclusive.

*fandoms arranged by number of work and sampled by convenience

anon, your ask came across as a little passive aggressive but i do think it's an interesting point so i will give you the most charitable interpretation and answer your question genuinely.

*fandoms are NOT in order this time i was tired of doing math

from this admittedly non-representative but still decently sized sample, it APPEARS true that fanfiction of shows aimed toward kids is on average less horny. however, it's not by that much. the non-miraculous average this time was 13.438% and miraculous is still significantly below that. in addition, i would argue that the same problems afflicting the miraculous fandom also afflict other fandoms on this list. in my experience the owl house is a similarly scary, chaste, and restrictive place. but that's for a different discussion.

in summary, i think it's fair to say the original point stands. miraculous is unusually low in explicit fics.

also, dagger wanted me to tell you that mickey mouse 2013 has 18% explicit fics.

If you filter for just like the first year or two of miraculous, I bet it would be a higher ratio. This fandom had quite a few really amazing writers writing a lot of explicit stuff, and they were harrassed and chastised out of the fandom. And since so many others, have seen the chastising, there are a lot who have been afraid to write explicit fic for the ML fandom even when they themselves have interest in exploring that aspect of their writing.

Totally agree with this, and I joined late in 2019 too and all of the explicit stuff I found was deleted, and knew some "big" ML authors who were chased out of the fandom/ AO3 for outside dramas and their writing choices. I wish I recorded everything back then because I came from Undertale AO3 side, didn't know in MLB fandom the explicit-genre authors were discriminated that badly
