I think the world would be a lot better if everyone understood OCD a lot more. Not just because folks with OCD such as myself get treated like shit because of folks not understanding, though thats part of it and people should treat us better. But because OCD is a disorder all about the connections between thoughts and actions, and the treatment is basically one big guided course on "thought crimes arent real", and everyone would be less shitty in general if they accepted that.
Like. A major thing with OCD is that you have intrusive thoughts, right? And when someone's untreated, this usually results in someone who just deeply hates themselves. A common aspect of OCD is worrying that you're a pedophile, not just because those intrusive thoughts can crop up, but also because if they did you worry you'll just unquestioningly act on those thoughts. And so you end up viewing yourself as a monster yet to unleash, which society doesnt do much to help.
But like, treatment (in particular mindfulness training) is built around letting thoughts and feelings just pass, without action, without judgment, and it makes a strong case that feelings and thoughts are entirely neutral. I have had incredibly upsetting intrusive thoughts. But none of them define me, its what I do with them that makes me who I am! Actions can be harmful, but thoughts and feelings which never get acted on...Aren't. Not even a little bit.
And well, once you go through this treatment, you realize how much of society is built around hating people for their thoughts and feelings rather than the effects of their actions. And I just well and truly wish that people wouldnt. It actually speaks a lot to a persons strength of character if they have thoughts and feelings which, if acted upon directly would be harmful...but choose actively instead to seek help, be better, find safer outlets for thoughts and feelings. In fact, I'd say all of them are much less harmful than anyone who spreads hate based on "thoughtcrime" mentality.
So yeah. Thoughtcrimes arent real, and fuck anyone who says they are!!! And if you're out there fighting thanklessly to find safe ways of handling your thoughts and feelings, you are beautiful and I love you.

truly the most american thing is Big Drink. more than late stage capitalism, more than an unparalleled cultural focus on individualism, more than 9/11 jokes
what binds all americans together culturally is Big Drink
and you might be saying "is this fat shaming" or "but mayor bloomberg outlawed Big Drink in nyc" or "gays are so annoying about their iced coffee" or some other dumb comment but no open your minds, Big Drink isn't just sugary or caffeinated beverages
every day i see one of you hydration bitches (affectionate) on the train with a water bottle so big a toddler could drown in it. that too is Big Drink. we literally invented a bigger beer can (tall boy) in wisconsin in the 60s in the service of Big Drink
anyway i never feel more american then when i have Big Drink in my hands
I also feel the need to point out to Europeans that the Big Drink isn’t actually meant to be consumed in one sitting. Just like Americans have leftovers culture at restaurants, we also have Big Drink culture where the Big Drink is consumed over several hours.
“Pratchett went back to older throwaway jokes (like dwarves being apparently unisex) and used them as metaphors to discuss social change, racial assimilation, and other complex issues, while reexamining the species he’d thrown in at the margins of his world simply because they existed at the margins of every other fantasy universe. If goblins and orcs and trolls could think, then why were they always just there to be slaughtered by the heroes? And if the heroes slaughtered sentient beings en masse, how heroic exactly were they? It was a long overdue start on redressing issues long swept under the rug by a parade of Tolkien successors who never thought of anyone green and slimy as anything but a notch on the protagonist’s sword, and much of the urgency in Pratchett’s last few books seemed to be related to them. ‘There’s only one true evil in the world,’ he said through his characters. ‘And that’s treating people like they were things.’ And in the last of his ‘grown-up’ Discworld books, that idea is shouted with the ferocity of those who have only a few words left and want to make them count. Goblins are people. Golems are people. Dwarves are people, and they do not become any less people because they decide to go by the gender they know themselves to be instead of the one society forces on them. Even trains might be people, and you’ll never know one way or the other unless you ask them, because treating someone like they’re a person and not a thing should be your default. And the only people who cling to tradition at the expense of real people are sad, angry dwellers in the darkness who don’t even understand how pathetic they are, clutching and grasping at the things they remember without ever understanding that the world was never that simple to begin with. The future is bright, it is shining, and it belongs to everyone.”

One time I was at a pub trivia night with some writer friends and we almost won but there was a tie. As a tiebreaker they asked us and the other team to write down as many moons of Jupiter as we could in two minutes.
None of us are very into astronomy so at first everyone was like oh we’re gonna lose but there were three of us at the table that night who were either former classics majors or otherwise super well read on Roman mythology and the three of us were like give us that paper right now and we just took turns writing down all of the lovers of Jupiter from mythology that we could.
So of course we won lol
You really never know what random niche knowledge you have will come in handy at trivia night. You really don’t.
