tl;dr: i'm logging off of tumblr for the foreseeable future after today. catch me on pillowfort, or, less actively, on bluesky. im also on discord @ owlsong74. rambling below the cut

ive been on this hellsite since 2012, very nearly half of my time on earth, including all of my high school and adult years, and across several major changes in my life. i've made a bunch of friends here, laughed at silly posts, was introduced to many new ideas, pieces of media, cool facts, and different viewpoints i may not have encountered otherwise, and had my idiolect irreversibly altered. the site and the people on it had a major part in making me who i am. it's also still by far the best social media in terms of it's features and format

but man!!! i cant trust this place! the bad changes outpace the good (and to be clear, there have been good changes: more options for search, tags in notes, etc), and time after time staff has shown to be incompetent and bigoted in it's selective use of TOS against particularly trans women. between monday's changes and today's bans, the past few days in particular have been a disaster.

(and im not a main target of their bans, but ever since my blog was deleted by staff a couple years ago for no reason, ive just been quietly waiting for it to happen again and this time stick for good)

there are other places i can find cool posts and memes, and honestly, there are better uses of my time than endlessly refreshing a major social media site anyway.

i have a lot of attachment to this place, so i'm not going to leave completely forever -- i'll probably still poke my head in now and then to check on things and find ancient posts for archival/nostalgia purposes -- but i'm logging out for the immediate future and i dont plan on actively posting anymore. i'm keeping my blogs up so the posts don't disappear into the ether, but i want to give this place the least amount of my time as possible

went to check if tumblr has got rid of one of the biggest nazi communities on here and the first thing i saw upon hitting enter was a drawing of josef mengele as a catboy.

i think staff have bigger fish to fry than forcing unnecessary changes that objectively make tumblr harder to use.

potentially hundreds of trans women just got banned for no reason (tumblr very literally said it's for no reason) and yet the very real nazis are still allowed here. my report of the nazi i mentioned in the first part of this post seems to have vanished into the void.

like thats the big thing, regardless of whether or not any of the individual transfem users who get banned Deserved those bannings, pointing out the double standard in where and when terms of service are actually held up is the big thing here. sometimes bigotry doesn't look like giving marginalized people consequences for No Reason sometimes bigotry looks like making sure marginalized people receive consequences for their actions overwhelmingly more frequently than privileged groups. deciding who you actually enforce your rules against is a big way this sort of thing manifests.

There are literal TCC fangirls on this site that post about how much they want to fuck their shooter idol, there are reichblr accounts posting about loving Hitler, there are pro-contact abusers posting about wanting to molest children and actively going into the DMs of minors. But staff is only obsessed with nuking innocent trans women.

The FDA is considering a petition to make all trans women on estrogen enroll in a registry as a condition of our prescriptions.

If you are in the United States, you have the power to comment on this proposed regulation. The instructions for doing so, and more about the petition, are here. I just left a comment, and it took two minutes. You can do so anonymously.

The petition is bad for other reasons too. It blatantly singles out transgender women and asks for mandatory psychiatric gatekeeping of lifesaving gender affirming care.

right now there are 61 comments on the petition and all are in support of it. Being one of the voices that pushes back is the easiest thing in the world.

If you don't like those posts about how everyone on this website doesn't care about trans women, and wouldn't lift a finger to save us from genocide, here's your chance to prove them wrong.

Reblogs in a chain now get their own notes

The reblog chain is one of the things that makes Tumblr unlike anywhere else. All the notes on reblogs are attributed to the original post, no matter which branch people actually liked or reblogged. We want to keep encouraging conversations, and give contributors the recognition they deserve. 

Soon, you'll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog's author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, you’ll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.

If a reblog doesn't add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn't lose notes just because people spread it quietly.

Past notes will stay on the original post — we're only changing what happens from here on out. Retroactively re-attributing all of them would be... a lot.

This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out – stay tuned!

Let's talk about reblog notes.

We rolled out a significant change to how notes work on reblogs, and the reaction has been strong. We're not going to pretend otherwise. 

First things first: We're reversing the change. Your feedback in comments, emails, and especially reblogs, made clear that the rollout created problems we need to address before moving forward. We also should have communicated this differently from the start, and we didn't.

We still believe there's a better version of how reblogs can work. One that gives every voice in a chain the credit it deserves. But we want to get there with you.

In the coming days we'll share more on how we plan to do that,  including ways to work directly with some of you on this and future changes before they ship.

note that pillowfort does not have reblog chains (they value the ability to prevent unwanted hijacking of posts more). however, you will at least be able to see all comments, reblogs, and likes you have gotten, which can't be said now of tumblr

bigots can now reblog your selfie or personal post, mock it, and block you, and if you don't see it the second it happens, it can spread to thousands of their ilk with literally no possible way for you to know, unless you happen to be on one of their blogs and come across it. are you comfortable with this? i know i'm not.

if they go through with this--and i can't remember a single time tumblr dot com course corrected in recent memory--i will genuinely be really really sad. one of my absolute favorite parts of this site was being able to look at the notes of a post and see the conversations it had sparked, see if someone had already raised a point i was planning to raise, see if the op had responded to a response i found interesting. this will massively hinder this from happening, while also making it much harder to use the notes of posts as blocklists (a basic proactive safety precaution to be a trans woman with any kind of following on here) and much easier to direct harassment at whomever one pleases

in case it's not clear to everyone, OPs can't even see tags unless they're on a post reblogged directly from them, even if nobody's added comments in the reblogs chain.

a post can have 500 reblogs, half of them with tags, but unless every single post is being shared directly from the original, the OP is probably going to think that nobody's saying anything

Even if you click on the notes you can only see the ones that came from your blog, there's no way to access other chains. What if I want to browse what other people are saying in different chains and replies? What if I want to see what other people said before me? Where's the CONVERSATION???

Literally none of the reblogs with tags or comments are visible on the blog activity, the only visible activity is the replies and even as the OP of the post I can only see the replies on the individual reblog that was replied to.

This seems to make it impossible to have a conversation with anyone on a post except the person directly replying to your reblog, so instead of being a conversation in the town square kind of feeling, it has more of a "I hope my email finds you well" or passing notes vibe.
