Here it is finally — James’ POV of the Whispering Room scene from Chain of Gold. I wanted to wait until Chain of Iron was released to give more people a chance to read the book, and also because what we learn in COI does inform the scene. I hope you enjoy!
The seven, Thalia and Nico at Jason's funeral and everyone of them hating every moment of it.
Because Camp Jupiter celebrate him like a honoured soilder.
They talk of his achievements.
The monsters he's slayed.
The quests he's been on.
Someone mentions his sacrifice was for the greater good.
And that sents them off.
Because how dare you, how fucking dare you!
How dare you reduce his life to his years of service.
Jason...
Jason who's eyes brightened like the sun whenever he was happy.
Jason who doodled in the margins of notebooks when he couldn't concentrate.
Jason who would laugh at even the most terrible of puns.
A laugh that would echo around them and only encourage them to make more.
Jason who stood up for the little guy.
Who joined the lowest of cohorts so they would get the treatment they deserved.
And when they didn't he still fought.
Jason who filled Percy with confidence, that he could do anything as long as Jason was by his side.
Jason who held his hand when the nightmares got to much and never let him apologise for it.
Jason who Annabeth saw as her little brother, who comforted her when Percy went missing even when she was mad.
Jason who sat beside her when she couldn't sleep and filled the space with his words.
She grew up in a cabin that was always full and hearing him gush about hef favourite thing made her feel at home.
Piper who loved him, no longer romantically but he would always hold a place in her heart.
Jason who would tease her about her dates but smile wide. Who wanted nothing but her to be happy, and being reminded he deserved that too.
Leo who died for him, who hasn't stopped crying and suprisingly the one holding him is Thalia.
Jason who he promised they'd see the world together and could picture him smiling brightly.
Who false memories aside was his best friend.
Thalia who lost her little brother all over again.
Nico who's praying to his father to grant Jason Elysium. The tears falling from his eyes as he loses the first person to completely accept him.
Jason who despite not knowing Nico, his first instinct is was to accept him. To support him to hold him in open arms.
Frank losing one of the first people to believe in him. The one who granted him the rank of Praetor when Frank didn't think he even deserved his parentage.
Who was his constant support. Who filled him with confidence.
Frank who killed his friends killer having to face that it won't bring him back.
Hazel who never forget Jason. Both of them bonding over not quite understanding the modern world.
Jason who explained things and never got tired of it. Who put on music and they'd both silly dance around the ship till they couldn't stop laughing.
Who made her brother happy.
And they said as much.
Because Jason Grace was a person.
He was a feral, silly abd a complete and utter nerd.
He was soft and sweet and powerful.
He was so loving and he was loved.
And damn you... Damn anyone who tries to erase that.
Jason Grace was a hero.
He was a friend, a brother, a son.
Jason Grace was more than you made him, more than you hurt him, more than the role you put him in.
And he deserves to be remembered as such.
And all of them knowing that Jason died because he thought he was simply a soilder.
And they would do anything to have him back and show him he was so much more.
They take over his funeral.
Apollo gives the campers a look if they try and intervene.
He sits quietly.
He wants to know about the boy who saved his life.
Shoutout to @skys-unused-main for their incorrect quotes that i used for this comic! Also, there's some creative liberty being taken with the quotes and kids design so they might look different from their official description.
It's really not that hard to understand, I'm a harry potter fan not in a "I'm in love with draco and I love jk for creating this universe" way but in a gay marauders fanfic masterpiece good old fashioned lover boy dorlene happy sadness flowerpot regulus headcanon human golden retriever wolfstar happy ending everyone lives 70s way
debunking pro-snape/anti-james arguments and putting it on the internet because clearly i hate myself. buckle up. this is gonna be a VERY long post. im ready for the amount of hate i will get; im willing to take one for the team.
I’ve seen a lot of discourse about Jegulus in this fandom and I want to give my opinion on it. Before I get into this I would like to say: no hate to any Jegulus shippers. You’re entitled to your own opinions, and I could care less about who you ship as long as it’s not pedophilia, incest, etc. This is just my opinion.
I really hate Jegulus for multiple reasons:
First off, it completely destroys their characters and makes 0 sense for both of them.
James was strongly against blood purity and the Potter family were labeled as blood traitors. He was invited to join the DE by Voldemort and declined (JKR confirmed this was 1 of the 3 ways he betrayed him.) Not to mention he betrayed Voldemort 2 other times. Plus, he was friends with Remus, a half-blood werewolf and Sirius, a blood traitor Gryffindor. Do you really think the Marauders would still be his friends if he suddenly dated a blood supremacist? Imagine if you’re a POC and your white friend dated a racist. Or if you were Jewish and your German friend dated a German N@z! supporter.
Regulus was strongly for blood purity, seeing as he made a shrine dedicated to Voldemort and the DE. This means he would’ve hated Muggleborns, half-bloods, half-breeds, and blood traitors.
Not to mention Sirius. Regulus probably loved Sirius since he asked Kreacher not to tell his family about the Horcrux, and Sirius died not knowing about it, but that doesn’t mean Regulus was a good brother when Sirius was still around. In his youth, Sirius would’ve hated Regulus because of Walburga and Orion’s favoritism. The Potters took Sirius in and James adopted Sirius as a brother. He would’ve hated Regulus because of the way Sirius talked about him. And considering that Sirius hated Regulus as kids, he would be very hurt and angry with James if he suddenly got in a relationship with him.
Second off, Jegulus and Jily can’t work in the same timeline. Lily would never go out with James if he dated a blood supremacist before her. If a white guy asked me to date him, and I knew he dated a white racist before me, I would be horrified and shocked and immediately say no.
And don’t even get me started on the HC about a poly relationship between Lily, James, and Regulus. I’m sorry, but that’s a very disgusting HC to have. Muggleborns are an allegory for Jewish people and DE are an allegory for N@z!s. It’s just like Dramione/Drarry, just Marauders Era edition.
The only way I can see Jegulus or a poly relationship between Regulus, James, and Lily working is in an AU where Regulus was always good, but that still changes him entirely and throws away anything canon about him.
I think a lot of people use Jegulus as a way to give Regulus a better redemption arc. But honestly, using love as a redemption arc doesn’t work and is just lazy writing. We see this with Snily and even Grindledore, to an extent. I think Regulus should’ve been given a better redemption arc but using Jegulus to do so makes no sense and isn’t a good way to fix JKR’s terrible try at a redemption without obsession.
- gross ship where the creepy but arguably (?) charming (not in snivellous’s case) death eater guy falls in love with the smart muggle born who canonically ends up with the cute blood traitor
drarry = jegulus
- slightly less gross but still pretty gross ship (IMO) where the homophobic homosexual somewhat charming death eater falls in love with the jock who canonically ends up with a redhead
deamus = wolfstar
- beautiful ship where roommates become lovers and live happily ever after and are perfect for each other, except in wolfstar’s case they both die :/
linny = dorlene
- mean quidditch lesbian from a pureblood family plus a she/they pansexual who’s a little soft and a little bubbly = cute ship
romione = jily
- gryffindor blood traitor who likes quidditch falls in love with the smart gryffindor muggleborn and they live happily ever after
I like to think that outside of Will, Nico spends a lot of time with other Apollo kids. Maybe not willingly at first, but Kayla and Austin are just kind of like “he’s one of us now“ and forcibly include him in all sibling shennigans. A new Apollo kid might be claimed and it’s just
New Camper: Who’s that?
Kayla: That’s Nico. He’s like our brother-in-law.
Nico: I am not - Kayla, please. I date your camp counselor… for some reason I have been bullied into being friends with everyone else here.
Austin: He brings us McDonalds when Will is at the infirmary.
Will: He what?
Kayla: It’s a joke, Will. Jeez. *whispers to new camper* It’s not a joke.
Like, it’s to the point where if they ever end up on separate teams during Capture the Flag that the Apollo kids are collectively pissed because he’s pretty much part of their cabin. Same thing anytime they try to separate them in camp activities. Nico is just lumped into Apollo cabin and if he isn’t placed with them then there will be rhyming curses to be had.
They also all get offended if Nico leaves camp without one of them.
Gracie: you know, you get to spend eternity in the underworld when you die. You only get limited time to hang out with us.
Nico: I was gone for an hour.
Gracie: And we missed you. What of it?
Nico: …sorry. I missed you too.
Eventually Nico can’t help but become fond of all of them as well. Gods help anyone who is ever mean to an Apollo camper. Also, he teaches the younger ones Mythomagic and it becomes a weekly tradition to play. He also aids in every prank they play.
In turn, if anyone is mean to Nico… well, there are a lot of Apollo kids with a variety of skills and powers. Draw your own conclusions.
Bonus: Somewhere along the way Apollo forgets that Nico isn’t actually part of his cabin and gets annoyed with another god for insulting his child while Hades is there like “Apollo, wtf he’s my kid? We talked about this??”
Hey Bruce. Kind of a bizarre night. Sorry if I seem a little shaken up.
So we found—or I guess Ty’s Sensor found—this dagger in the weapons cache at Southwark Cathedral. Which is pretty random since we were just in the area because of the Shadow Market. (I guess whoever put the dagger there was probably also in the area for the Shadow Market, come to think of it.)
I write to you tonight by witchlight, sitting in the hallway outside our bedroom. Which is very creepy in itself, because basically everywhere in this house is creepy except our bedroom, at this point. (Well, some of it is not creepy because it looks like a construction site, but whatever.) I couldn’t sleep at all, and I didn’t want to keep Julian awake.
First the good news: Ty was awake, and we weren’t even home (to be fair, it takes a solid hour to go between Chiswick and Southwark) before he had texted Julian a translation of the text on the dagger. Turns out it’s Farsi. Julian read it out loud:
I wanted so much to have a gleaming dagger, that each of my ribs became a dagger.
He grinned at me. “Hot,” he said. “Reminds me of you.”
“You mean, when I was exclusively driven by thoughts of revenge?” I said.
He looked hurt. “No,” he said. “You just like a good dagger.”
“Not sure I would turn all my ribs into daggers, though,” I said. “Ribs seem important to keep inside your body.”
“One rib?” suggested Julian.
Well, maybe one rib.
We didn’t get home until after midnight, but there was no way we were going to bed without showing the dagger to the ghost. We didn’t even have to discuss it, we just immediately went to the dining room.
We’ve been wrestling with how to address our ghost. He’s often quite moody so it’s hard to know what name he prefers. Julian’s been going with “Spirit,” like Ebenezer Scrooge. You know, “Spirit, show me no more!”
Anyway, Julian said something like, “Spirit, we wish your attention. We have something to show you.” The candles all flared up in response, which was a neat trick, though it did not make things less creepy.
We put the dagger on the table and asked the ghost if it was the owner of the dagger, or at least recognized it. Which was a long shot, given that it responded so negatively to the flask. But it seemed like the place to start.
Suddenly the wind picked up and all the candle flames went sideways. Which was a surprise, because this is one of the few rooms in the house with intact windows, and it wasn’t windy outside. And the wind didn’t just gust, it continued, getting louder and softer, higher and lower in pitch. Julian and I just looked at each other. We had no idea what was happening.
After maybe a minute, the wind began to break into little bursts, and then —
Hang on, just had to take a moment. I shivered again, remembering it.
Then a voice spoke through the wind.
It was faint, and at a whisper, and it barely sounded like a human voice at all. But the wind spoke. The ghost spoke.
And it said:
“NOT”
“MINE
“YOURS”
We almost bolted. If Julian hadn’t been there I definitely would have bolted. And I think he would have, if I hadn’t been there. It wasn’t even the words. It was that there were words at all. The ghost was getting stronger.
I mean, remember, it just started with random poltergeist stuff, knocking things over, and then it could write in the dust. And now it could speak. Why was it getting stronger? Was our presence doing it? Was it the repairs, somehow? Did the dagger make it stronger?
And how strong would it get?
Julian got his voice back first. “Mine?” he said. “You’re saying the dagger is mine?”
And then—by the Angel, Bruce, the hair on my arms is sticking up just to write this—the wind spoke again, and it said, “CARSTAIRS.”
I couldn’t speak. Julian said, “Emma? The dagger is hers?”
The wind shifted direction. All the candle flames tilted the other way.
It spoke again.
“TAKE”
“HOME”
“CARSTAIRS”
“Home?” I said. “Home, like, our home? Los Angeles?”
“Or this home?” Julian suggested. “Maybe it needs to be taken to someplace in the house—”
The wind kicked up loudly and said, in the strongest voice it had managed so far:
“HOME”
“CARSTAIRS”
“CIRENWORTH”
The wind dropped, the candles went out, the room was bathed in darkness. The ghost had gone. I could feel its absence. The silence hurt my ears.
I have the dagger with me now. I took it to bed with me and I don’t want to let it out of my sight, for some reason. I keep turning it over and over in my hands. “Cirenworth” meant Jem, of course, so maybe it was his dagger, once upon a time. Or maybe it belonged to someone who lived there when the ghost was alive. The image of Carstairs ancestors of the past keep going through my mind. When I close my eyes, I feel like I can see whoever owned this dagger once, standing over me — protectively, even, as if they know we’re related and want to stand by me, even through the centuries.
I think Magnus is right that the ghost means well. I don’t think a malevolent ghost would be as helpful as this one is clearly trying to be. And the faeries working on the house seem totally unbothered by it, which they wouldn’t if they thought it had evil intent. Which makes me think the ghost isn’t part of the curse, but instead, maybe the ghost is trapped here by the curse.
Okay, I feel a little better after writing all that down. I think I’m going to go put the dagger someplace safe and try to get some sleep. Thanks for listening as always, Bruce. You’re a pal.
And tomorrow – we get to see Jem and Tessa and Kit and Mina, because we’re going to Cirenworth!
