Oh, okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I donât know, that gaslight gatekeep girlboss meme, for instance, because youâre trying to tell the world that you think modern feminism has been co-opted by corporations. But what you donât know is that that meme is not from Instagram, it's not from Twitter, it's not from Tiktok, itâs actually from Tumblr. Youâre also blithely unaware of the fact that in January 2021, Tumblr user missnumber1111 posted, "today's agenda: gaslight gatekeep and most importantly girlboss." And then I think it was a-m-e-t-h-y-s-t-r-o-s-e, wasnât it, who reblogged it with an image of the phrase edited over a piece of "Live, Laugh, Love" wall art? And then gaslight gatekeep girlboss showed up in the feeds of eight different Twitter repost accounts. Then it filtered down through Instagram and then trickled on down into some tragic âalt side of Tiktokâ where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that meme represents millions of notes and countless Tumblr users and so itâs sort of comical how you think that youâve made a choice that exempts you from Tumblr when, in fact, youâre wearing the meme that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of âstuff.â
I swear this is how I feel every time I see a Tumblr screenshot out in the wild
*goes to Coachella in a white linen suit like an antebellum lawyer, sweating profusely and dabbing at my forehead with a handkerchief* now, Iâm no fancy scientist, but would you folk know where a simple gentleman such as myself could obtain some acid? Now, Iâm no big city lawyer, but could any of you fine youths point a country boy such as myself in the direction of some fucking acid?

doomed by the narrative but not to death. doomed to survive. doomed to stay alive inside the story. doomed to never escape the narrative, not even through death. you are allowed no exit. there is no way out for you and there never was. you couldnât die if you wanted to. the narrative has a hold on you and it wonât let go. death is too sweet a doom for you. the story has something much worse in mind. there is no way out.
The reason you can't be the next J R R Tolkien isn't because you don't have the talent, but because you're not the right kind of unwell. Tolkien wasn't bent for fantasy worldbuilding; he was bent for constructed languages, and got into fantasy worldbuilding in order to provide a material context in which to ground the notional evolution of the languages he invented. If you want to be the next Tolkien, you can't start with the worldbuilding; you've gotta find something extremely specific to fixate on, and develop it in such depth that inventing a world to contain it is genuinely the most logical next step.
#the best route is clearly to get really into a specific kink scenario and invent a world to justify it (via @salix03)
That's not even a joke. Developing a kink scenario so elaborate and so excruciatingly particular that it can only properly be contemplated in the frame of a world created specifically to contain it is genuinely closer to Tolkien's actual creative process than 99% of the stuff that plays at being heir to his legacy.
it's so wild when your parent changes when you become an adult. my dad is very cordial and non confrontational - he regularly helps me with adult stuff like changing the oil or providing insurance tips. he's always smiling when i call him on video and providing jokes when i complain about college
when i was a kid, i would have to tiptoe around his anger issues often, sometimes running quietly past his work table until he got his own place completely separate from our family, locked away for days. every so often he would start screaming in the car and trying to hit me or my brother for talking too loud while my mom attempted to calm him down as he swerved on the road. and now he, smiling, helps me with car insurance.
like oh, this is just who you are when you have power over someone, and this is who you are when you dont have power over someone. no wonder you can have a normal life, friends, work while scaring the shit out of your kids and wife. i see it now. i see why no one would have believed me. that, i think, is one of the core fears of trauma - seeing the outside of it from the perspective of other adults that brushed you aside, and understanding. of course, that understanding gives the opposite of solace; it just gives you more grief with nowhere for it to go
id also like to add to this with the note that people absolutely can change and improve; while it is less likely, even very abusive individuals can change, if they sincerely put in the work
however, this is not what my situation is referencing. there is one important distinction between people who genuinely change for the better for everyone and people who change for the better for those they see as worthy. once i became an adult and my parents treated me with more respect, i still saw how they treated others considered below their power, which informed me of exactly who they were, and how they in actuality did not change at all
i believe this is an important point - just because someone treats you nicely, it does not mean they treat everyone nicely, and vice versa. that is why it is important to not automatically brush off stories of abuse, and why people who hold awful, bigoted beliefs can also hold the door open for you with a smile.
people should be allowed to have low ambition, and also be able to feed a family on the salary of a cashier at a convenience store.
And! We need cashiers. And convenience stores. And I think it's kind of broken that society says people who want to do stuff like that have "low" ambition (not you OP, I get you're using it illustratively because that's what society labels said jobs) and don't deserve to live at the same standard as people with "high" ambitions.
If we need someone to do a job, that job is a role in the community and deserves not just a salary but cultural respect for the role.
"high" ambition jobs are all jobs that involve domineering and controlling others. "low" ambition jobs are all jobs that involve service to others. Have you noticed? Because I have noticed.
But serving others is actually more needed than controlling them.
Attended a rattlesnake conference yesterday and one of the presenters was talking about public attitudes towards snakes, specifically how showing them in a non-aggressive context helps to create more positive attitudes, and. Y'all. I NEED to show you the image he used as an example
Look at him. Look at this smiley newborn sidewinder sitting in a bottle cap. He is so small and so happy he is EXACTLY the right size to sit comfortably in a bottle cap
You gotta be really publicly passionate about things if you want your friends to text you. Bc people will forget to text you because theyâre human. But if youâre really openly the friend who loves identifying ants your friends will think of you when they see ants. And theyâll text you âwhat ant is this [blurry photo]â. And then theyâll ask you how youâve been and we should get coffee sometime. But if they donât know what you love theyâll never know what you like
And then when the ant convention is in town theyâll be like dude⌠we should go to the ant convention. But they would never think to go if they didnât know u loved ants
And sometimes you need to ask them to go to the ant convention. But you Will not get anywhere hiding your passions
