Juliaon Roels
Firaxis Gamesā concept artist Sang Han Sang on how to give your digital art a traditional look and feel. [source]
00. BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Many people have tried using brushes that simulate analogue bristles, but they may not have thought about how the paint is applied. Traditional painters take great care in applying each stroke of paint, which has been thoughtfully blended to the right colour and value on a palette.
Since the digital medium is so fast and forgiving, we tend to dive right in without much thought and noodle around until something happens. I think this leads to muddy colours, and the energy of the initial gesture gets lost.
01. SKETCH IT OUT
I begin with a rough sketch, trying to keep it loose and gestural. Itās difficult to think about design, colour, lighting and composition all in one pass so I break it down into steps and keep it simple at the beginning. These early steps are important because not only are they the foundation for an entire painting, but some of these strokes may show through in the finished work.
02. LAYER IT UP
Here I create a new layer and change the mode to Multiply. I then paint on this layer with a colour that resembles yellow ochre or burnt sienna. This will help to gauge value and colour more easily than if it was a white canvas. I could have simply filled the layer with a flat colour, but again, the painted strokes may show through and add to the final painting.
03. RENDERING
In this step, I block in the local colours and start rendering. As I do this, I try to remember not to overly blend or noodle around too much, as mentioned above. One of my goals is to retain the energy of each brush-stroke and put paint down with a sense of conviction. Sometimes I put a single stroke down, undo it and repeat this process many times until Iām satisfied.
04. LEAVE MARKS
Keep in mind that you donāt have to render everything. Youāll notice in traditional paintings, certain details are kept as abstract marks. This adds another level of interest to the viewer. As you get closer to the end of the painting, lay the strokes down with lower opacity to give the effect of thicker paint. I like to do this when rendering certain accents, such as highlights.
im having a hard time thinking of poses to draw????? cn you help maybe>???????/
UMM for me itās easier to come up with poses if I think of my character as doing an ACTION not a pose idk if that makes sense?
So instead of thinking of a fixed pose, I think of an action that my char could be doing e.g eating a piece of pie
itās easier for me to visualize a pose if thereās some context YEAH
ALSO I like to draw sequences? of a certain action, and then pick the one I like best e.g. if my OC is reading
1) Standard pose > 2 & 3 poses that might follow after if this is movingĀ
or if theyāre frying an egg
Ā I donāt draw it out in full all the time ofc, sometimes I just draw like really sketchy sequences yeah idk if that makes sense, but it helps me figure out poses besides the most obvious one!
WHEN YOU DONāT KNOW where to put the hands always go back to: WHAT WOULD YOU DO if youāre doing this particular action?? And if all things fail, you can always go to sites like pixelovely for poses
hair tutorial?! please :3
HELLO! Iām not too sure on how to make a hair tutorial since i kinda just go the hell out with it (its really inconsistent it hurts lol). But iāll try my best!
Scalp points is really important. You would want it to look natural, and from there you can control where your front hair goes. There are 3 main points, one in the middle and the other two by your temples.
I usually divides my hair sections into 3: the front, sides, and back. YOU DONT REALLY HAVE TO FOLLOW EVERYTHING THOUGH, JUST DO YOUR THANG. I know, my hair structures doesnt make sense with the points and stuffs lmao. But yeah you got my point.
Examples with different hairstyles:
Note to self: do not attempt curly hair if youāll just fuck things up
Side view examples:
Girls Hair example:
Girls hair doesnt make sense. Just go crazy and make them fabulous queens.
So yeah, thats all i manage to think of. There are great artists out there who make better tutorials than me lmao. Check out kelpls amazing tutorials, or just look at some fancy kpop artistsā hair for reference their hair are amazing
same
Pretty much

just fucking draw. donāt compare yourself to other people, donāt stop because you drew a lot last tuesday and you havenāt visibly improved. it takes time, effort, and a lot of perseverance. besides, no matter how ābadā you think you are, thereās still gonna be someone who thinks the stuff you produce is the best goddamn thing theyāve ever seen in their entire life. the artist you were five years ago would have their mind fucking blown by the artist you are today. so just draw a fuckton, because every new thing you draw is one drawing better than you were before.
I needed to read this.

THIS IS SO IMPORTANT OMG
For every artist who thinks theyĀ suck atĀ art.
Since Iāve been playing Wildstar so much here lately, I thought Iād celebrate with a little concept art dump!! Ā Some of the many random things I drew during my time at Carbine. Ā Also Iām sure Andy Cotnam, Mindy Lee, or Johnson Truong probably had a hand in the concepting of more than a few of these. Ā What a super talented team I had! Ā
Thatās not cool Tumblr.
Reblogging just in case this is true. Iāll get it off my blog here later, but for nowā¦.
Yeah if this is true⦠Iām just leaving this here and may or not remove all art.
TIME TO READ THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS CHANGES.
Bleh
Oh yeah. Itās true.
What makes this even more of a shitshow though? Well, if you donāt feel like digging through all the legalese to find this section, Iāve done it for you. This is what it says as of 2014-01-25, 19:53 PST:
Read that. Read all of it. Not just the legalese in white. Not just the āskimmer-friendlyā version in gray. Read both and notice how they technically, for all legal purposes, say the same thingsā¦yet completely contradict one another from any practical standpoint. The gray boxes are all nice and friendly. The legalese is basically a great big olā FUCK YOU.
So yeah, signal boost the hell out of this.
so anyone know what we should do if this goes through?
lmao im going to shit on someone i hate this
SIGN THE PETITION
Iām pretty sure this is the same terms other blogging/social media sites have? like facebook/twitter/instagram/blogger ect. So you canāt sue for work being reblogged or shared ect. I remember similar discussions about all those sites and wether or not you should post to them. So, good to be aware. But I donāt think theyāre trying to lie in the grey boxes. And I donāt think tumblr is going to start ripping content and selling it for profit.
This is like installing Windows on a Mac.
I am physically required to reblog this or my heart will stop beating.

like āwow youre really cool and funny and i want to be your friend but i dont feel like weāre there yet im just gonna stand here and hope you engage me in conversationā
This is SO TRUE
