remember the time i pitched a longform piece to buzzfeed and the editor was like, “this sure is an interesting idea, how about you write this entire 12,000-word article on spec and then i’ll take a look at it and see if i like it enough to publish it and pay you for it” and i was like, “no, i want some assurance that you will publish my work and pay me for my labour before i spend several months researching and reporting and writing this piece, that is standard in this industry,” and she never replied to me, and i eventually pitched it to another publication with a fraction of buzzfeed’s budget and got paid literally thousands of dollars. bc i think about that a lot.

Quotes were lifted from my blog an attributed to “one anonymous blogger” like wild, you have my url and my name right there but okay.

Huffpo did a similar thing with one of my chronic health posts. All of them were taken down after I made it Abundantly clear that I am very much not anonymous and wanted to be credited for my work which I put a lot of time and emotional labor into, not to mention academic qualifications. I didn’t even ask for money, I just wanted my work to be acknowledged, but even that was too much. I’ve since taken steps to ensure everything I write, even here on tumblr, is copyrighted, because if my words are good enough to steal, they’re good enough for places like that to Pay Me.

Funnily enough after that I stopped seeing my words being anonymously attributed. Weird.

To date TOR publishing is the only place that’s ever properly attributed my name to something I’ve written.

Also huge shout out to people who do contact me and ask if they can quote me in their journals and podcasts. Thank you for not erasing me from my words. They’re all I have left in terms of my ability to work and provide income for myself, so thank you for asking permission and for sourcing properly. It matters more than you realize.

I was a little late to the Hozier party. I mean I loved Take Me To Church and I laughed at the dark forest prince memes and I even reblogged them, but I figured it was all kind of a tumblr exaggeration.

Then I listened to his album, wherein he sings about:

decomposing in a field with his love and getting eaten by foxes

being dug out of the dirt by his love, who he implores to kiss him “like real people do”, implying that neither of them are real people
