Originally the wing of an altarpiece, this panel represents Maurice, the Roman legion commander martyred for refusing to slaughter Christians. It was likely commissioned by Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg (1490–1545), the most powerful prelate in the Holy Roman Empire, who established the collegiate church at Halle as a showplace for his art patronage and his collection of over 8,200 relics. Cranach’s painting reproduces one of the church’s treasures, a life-size reliquary statue of Saint Maurice in a gold-trimmed suit of silver armor. The collar of the Golden Fleece and the imperial eagle on the banner are references to the reigning emperor, Charles V.

This panel was the left wing of an altarpiece, dating from about 1522–25, probably once in Halle, Germany. The figure is based on a life-size reliquary statue in gold and silver made in about 1521 for Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg’s famous reliquary collection kept in Halle. The reliquary was melted down in 1540/41, but is known through the “Hallesches Heiltumsbuch,” the illustrated 1525–27 inventory of the reliquary collection (Hofbibliothek, Aschaffenburg), with drawings by a pupil of Cranach. The reliquary of Saint Maurice is reproduced on fol. 227v. An altarpiece dated 1529 in the Marktkirche, Halle, includes a panel also based on the reliquary statue of Saint Maurice. The reliquary statue, and thus the drawing in the “Hallesches Heiltumsbuch” and the two paintings, may be wearing the ceremonial armor worn by Charles V at his coronation of 1520 and possibly subsequently given to Cardinal Albrecht. Matthias Grünewald shows Saint Maurice wearing similar armor in his “Saints Erasmus and Maurice” (Alte Pinakothek, Munich) of 1520–24. According to legend, Maurice was the commander of the Theban Legion, a group of Roman soldiers comprised of Christians from Thebes, Egypt. While serving in Gaul, they refused to persecute some local Christians, and were executed by Emperor Maximian Herculeus in A.D. 287.
