Neerja Bhanot (1963-1986) was a Pan Am flight attendant who sacrificed her life in order to prevent a greater tragedy. When Pan Am Flight 73, going from Mumbai to New York, was hijacked by four terrorists on September 5 1986, she alerted the rest of the crew, allowing them to flee, and took control of the cabin.

When the terrorists asked for the passenger’s passports so they could identify the Americans, she disposed of the documents and helped a number of passengers escape through an emergency door. She was killed while sheltering three children from a rain of bullets.

She was posthumously given the Ashkok Chakra Award, the highest peacetime bravery award in India.

O cinema é uma das maiores formas de arte do mundo, capaz de alcançar lugares inimagináveis. Infelizmente, também tem servido o propósito de impor um padrão que não representa a grande maioria da população mundial. Os filmes produzidos em lugares como a América do Norte (menos o México) e a Europa têm sido a norma por muitos anos, e, geralmente, são aqueles que podem alcançar uma audiência maior. Por causa disso, histórias (norte) americanas e europeias foram contadas e ouvidas repetidas vezes, enquanto as histórias de outras pessoas foram relegadas para às margens. Quero mudar isso, pelo menos para mim. Quero ouvir essas histórias, qualquer que seja a língua em que elas estejam, qualquer que seja o lugar de onde vêm. Algumas dessas histórias estão perto de casa, algumas são tão distantes que eu não posso imaginar o que esperar. Mas todas elas valem a pena ouvir. Eu também quero te encorajar a fazer o mesmo. Se você gostaria de se juntar a mim, aqui estão as diretrizes. Você pode segui-las, ou você pode fazer esse desafio da maneira que você preferir. O importante é ouvir essas histórias.

Cinema is one of the greatest forms of art in the World, capable of reaching inimaginable places. Sadly, it also has served the purpose of enforcing a pattern that doesn’t represent the great majority of the World population. The films produced in places such as North America (minus Mexico) and Europe have been the norm for many years, and, usually, are those who can reach a greater audience. Because of that, American and European stories have been told and listened again and again, while the stories of other people can be relegated to the margins. I want to change that, at least for myself. I want to listen to those stories, whatever language they may be in, whatever place they may be from. Some of those stories are close to home, some are so distant I can’t possibly imagine what to expect. But all of them are worth listening to. I also want to encourage you to do the same. If you would like to join me, here are the guidelines. You can follow them, or you can do it the way you find it to be better. The important thing is to listen to these stories.
