no dragon age romance will ever compare to zevran arainai. he's bisexual. he was raised in a murder assassin torture cult after being raised in a brothel. he has a bunch of tattoos and even knows how to give them. he tries to murder you when you first meet him and then poses sexily afterwards. he says he's skilled at lockpicking and then never manages to pick a single lock in the entire game. he murdered his last lover after falsely believing that she betrayed the crows. he regularly slept with his marks before killing them to give them one last good night alive. when you ask him to have sex with you he says one liners like "arghhh pirate zevran reporting for duty!" he gets upset and broody when he realizes that he's in love with you after you ask him for more in your relationship. he proposes to you with an earring from a dead guy before he even tells you that he loves you. he's the only companion to almost completely stay with you after origins (besides the dlcs and parts of da2, he presumably stays with you the rest of your lives). if you die, he never gets into a relationship or has sex with anyone ever again. he constantly talks about you when he's away from you (da2). he calls the sword of the dead king of ferelden "sexy" and says that he "must have it". he's a devout andrastian. he loves being an assassin and doesn't feel bad about murdering people. you can have a threesome with him and a woman he used to sleep with and helped save from her abusive husband. he's slept with countless people and you're the first person that he's ever actually loved. he spends the rest of his life when he's not with you devoted to terrorizing the organization that abused him as a child (and adult) and killing of its leaders. when you tell him that you love him, he says that "he knows." he's blonde. and he's perfect in every way possible.

Sort of jumping off of this post- it is something I have been thinking about a lot lately like. As a lesbian. The sheer dominance of f/m in fandom spaces like this and focus on male characters over women no matter what, even when the people playing the games and writing the majority of the fic are ostensibly, bisexual/pansexual, and I swear this isn’t me trying to be bi/panphobic or say that m/f relationships cannot be queer- I do not believe that. But I do believe there is an inherent misogyny reflected in the fact that so many people who are bi/pan just do not write f/f or romance any of the women while playing through the games. I cannot tell you the amount of times I have seen these people self report in the tags or replies of posts that were made complaining about this specific phenomenon. Talking about how oh they tried but then WhoopsieDaisy! They just tripped right into romancing their fandom fave #whiteboy again. Wow if only this female character wasn't Such A Bitch it would be easier not to hate her or care about her storyline or narrative or whatever but she's just sooooooo unlikeable. And you can tell like… reading their confessions that they think they deserve credit for… Thinking about romancing the female character once? Like that definitely counts as. Caring About Women. And it's totally not extremely misogynistic to bail out on that for the same exact male character they've romanced 7 times already and counting.

Like it's hard enough to get men to give a shit about women as people with interiority. But the fact that it is also so incredibly difficult to get bi/pan cis women and tme non-binary people to care as well is incredibly disheartening. I already knew this was a thing, nobody likes it when we point it out- but genuinely, it is So Often like pulling teeth to get people who are not trans women, transfems, and/or lesbians to care about characters who are women. (Though tbh I Would be interested to see the data break down here for race because this is not actually an issue I, personally, have noticed much with bi/pan poc, so it may just be a majority white fandom problem, or it might just be the ppl I hang out with in general and the fact that fandom is overall nauseatingly white).

Also this post demonstrates this really well, showing off more statistics in regards to fan works specifically, which I do find especially damning when paired with the survey results.

As a lesbian, I do not feel as if it is unreasonable, to ask that the people who claim to care about women, to be attracted to both men and women, to actually interact with fandom and the source material in a way that actually reflects that?

Why is it that the focus is so constantly on the male characters? Even when the people writing fic are bi/pan and supposedly also into women! Why is it so difficult to get broader fandom interested in female characters and their storylines? Many of the romance options who are women in Dragon Age aren't even hetlocked! You've got Leiliana, Isabela, Merrill, Sera, & Josephine if you still want to play as a woman! You've got Bellara, Neve, and Harding in DATV if you'd like to play as a woman or non-binary character.

I know there's bi mods for Morrigan because I've used one. I'm sure there's also bi mods for Cassandra!

I do recognize that it's work to unlearn the inherent biases we were raised with, and that centering men comes naturally because that's what is most common in the world we live in. But we've got to do better than this. It's so worth it to practice decentering men. It doesn't have to be this way.

Appreciate women with me. Appreciate the depths and nuances that these characters have- there's so much to dig into here if you'll just give women the time of day.
