Day 4: from Cumberland we set off on the C&O, which promised to be much muddier and bumpier than the mostly paved GAP trail. Also the beginning of seeing over 70 locks and lock houses, and over three trillion turtles.
This was our easy day, so just 31 miles, ending up in Paw Paw, WV
Day 3: we stayed at a pretty excellent bike-themed BNB l, Inn at 9 Decatur. The next morning I had the best breakfast burrito I've had in many years
Day 3: Made it to Cumberland! The terminus of the GAP Trail and start of the C&O Towpath.
Day3: Bone Cave and unnecessary quotations between Meyersdale and Cumberland
Meyersdale itself had some cool buildings, a railroad museum, and POTATO BARRELS (giant loaded tater tots)
Day 3: Confluence to Cumberland (62 miles). Rode through a lot of long viaducts and scenic valleys, stopping eventually in Meyersdale for lunch
Day 2 ended in Confluence, PA. We had been hearing rave reviews of it our entire trip, and about River's Edge Cafe, so we had dinner (apps and salads) there. By the time we finished eating it was barely dark and not one place in town remained open.

Tours are only of the exterior until May 1, but given the design you can see most of the interior unobstructed. Rod C was a great tour guide, and our tour group was limited to Delia and me.
Day 2's afternoon contained a special treat: Fallingwater.
Ohiopyle State Park, the most popular state park in Pennsylvania, with waterfalls, rafting, and hiking. And the first of many trains we'd have to wait to pass.
Day 2 - through Connelsville and on the way to Ohiopyle. Connelsville (stained glass arch, houses) was meant to be a lunch stop but nothing was open so we soldiered on to Ohiopyle for pizza
Day 1 was 51 miles - we decided to ride around Pittsburgh before starting on the actual trail.
Day 2 was 46.5 miles - starting in Van Meter and ended in Confluence, with a stopover in Ohiopyle for a Fallingwater tour.
First night we stayed on this tragically historic property in a tiny house on stilts. Van Meter, PA
We came across this waterfall Day 1 - it was impossible not to stop and stare. It's a very visible marker of pollution from a dominant industry and I appreciated that pointing out the origins was not suppressed, even though those origins seem obvious.
