when christian artists change the line in hallelujah from âmaybe thereâs a God aboveâ to âI know that thereâs a God aboveâ >:c
#idk why iâm so unreasonably angry#maybe cuz itâs my fav line
itâs also because Leonard COHEN (!) was Jewish and this is a quintessentially Jewish line, and changing it to that level of Annoying Certainty is stripping it of its Jewish meaning and imbuing it with that particularly American smug evangelical Christian attitude that makes me tired, so very tired
THAT IS EXACTLY WHY
I donât think Iâve heard any cover artist sing my favorite verses You say I took the name in vain I donât even know the name But if I did, well really, whatâs it to you? Thereâs a blaze of light In every word It doesnât matter which you heard The holy or the broken Hallelujah I did my best, it wasnât much I couldnât feel, so I tried to touch Iâve told the truth, I didnât come to fool you And even though It all went wrong Iâll stand before the Lord of Song With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
um woah
I will always hit the reblog button so hard for Hallelujah but ESPECIALLY mentions of the elusive final verses which are just about my favorite lyrics ever. Why do people always omit the best part of the song??
In Yiddish
In Hebrew
In Ladino
It got better
Also people keep putting it on Christmas albums? Like not only is it a Jewish song, holiday albums are pure cheese. Hallelujah is about losing faith. Itâs like putting Losing My Religion on a Christmas album because it has the word Religion in the title.
IâŠhad no idea this was a traditional Jewish song. That makes me all the more confused on why it was used in Shrek 1 the way it was.
more fitting in shrek than on a Christmas album itâs not like any of shrek makes sense already
i enjoyed this very much, thank you andrew huang.

I feel torn about tumblrâs love of southern gothic.  Thereâs a lot of cool stuff in that genre to be admired, but I feel like sometimes those posts (especially when made by people who donât live in the south- and hey, neither do I) come across as âarenât poor people spooooky?â
As a born-and-raised southerner, I was surprised to discover this literary convention because a lot of modern southern gothic fantasy written by southerners focuses on old-money families who turn out to be [witches/werewolves/vampires/etc]. I didnât encounter the âscary redneck mountain peopleâ variant in non-fantastical media until later, and it baffles me because the modern southern elite are TERRIFYING.
Endlessly smiling hypocritical senators in tacky palatial houses with wives who espouse âtraditional valuesâ while being poisonously sweet and cutthroat? Those make much more frightening antagonists for gothic heroes/heroines to fight. If you live in the south you will probably never meet backwoods demon sibling-spouses but youâve definitely seen the void staring out of a âLive, Laugh, Loveâ picture frame.
ACCURATE
Tumblr inherently misunderstands the function of Southern Gothic literature and has appropriated it for its pervasive almost supernatural poetic style. They donât understand its themes, why it was written, or how to properly write it. Actual Southern Gothic literature is not as melodramatic as one might think and it isnât about aesthetic style points. Itâs style is actually scathingly sarcastic in a nearly caustic way, and itâs meant to amplify structural violence by turning upstanding members of society into villains. It does make the poor grotesque at time, but in the same novel also redeems them by showing how societal ills have painted an unfair picture.
Southern Gothic is a genre for the poor, the colored, the queer; itâs not about signs that say âHell is hereâ or forcing tired stereotypes that fundamentally misunderstand poverty, racism, and homo-/transphobia onto the South in a sweeping sensationalist way. Appropriated Gothic Americana aesthetic takes the voice from Southern authors who want to talk about real systemic wrongs and evils in a way that provides accurate social commentary.
Thatâs not to say that the neo-gothic Americana style that Tumblr has no merit; itâs just difficult as a southern writer to watch people play around with serious topics for the sake of dramatic aesthetics and not realize that theyâre being harmful and sort of mocking a tradition that they havenât bothered to really study.Â

I love Gordon Ramsay so much.
He comes from a very poor family. His father was an alcoholic who beat him and his mother (he once poured hot tea over her and put her in hospital several times), his brother is a drug addict, he literally built an empire out of nothing.
He credits his mother as his biggest inspiration and often has her cooking in his shows.
When he left his first restaurant he pulled a successful Jerry Maguire - the entire kitchen staff went with him. That tells you what heâs like to work with.
He was one of the first to give a restaurant to a female chef.
He went to prison (Gordon Behind Bars) and taught inmates to bake and they opened a bakery (Bad Boys Bakery) that is still running. He hired one of them when he got out.
He did documentaries about the cruelty of shark hunting and cocaine. (when he discovered cocaine was used by his staff he didnât fire anyone but made sure they are offered treatment)
His kids are a treasure.
He is always ALWAYS kind to servers.
When one of his partners (Marcus Wareing) wanted to leave they got into a fight and settled it in court, they no longer speak to each other but this is what Marcus said about him after the fight:Â
I feel bad that the first association to him for a lot of people is this shouty TV chef when heâs truly a wonderful person.Â
Oh and then thereâs this:
this entire episodeÂ
Also the whole season 3 of Master Chef with the blind chef Christine Ha. Through the whole season we see Gordon working as her eyes: describing what the dishes look like, what the ingredients should feel like etc. He even describes her wedding photo to her (which her husband sent to her with a letter), which is like the sweetest moment ever. And when she made some beautiful pie but doubted herself on what it looked like, Gordon made sure that she could HEAR the perfect crust on the pie.

Just a heads up Patreon has plans to change their pricing model and its caused a lot of users to drop donations
I thought I should explain this on this blog because this is the only blog I have that regularly gets monthly patreon donations and its good to spread this information.
Patreon slammed after pitching fee hike as boon for creators
Iâm not here to encourage you to donate or not donate to my patreon for this blog, I just want to explain whatâs going on:
If you like my blog and want to continue donating to me, Iâm grateful, but if not I can also understand that. Iâve already lost one monthly donor this month, probably because of the change in structure which heavily punishes those who make multiple donations.
If you want to support my Canadian Politics blogging you can do so here.
If you think these proposed changes will hurt your chances of supporting my blogging in the future, I can look into other websites I can use instead. Iâve seen patreon users online who are already losing a fair amount of monthly donations due to this:
If you could share this so other Patreon creators are aware of these coming changes Iâd appreciate it. This has the potential to negatively effect a lot of artists, bloggers, and creative people online who depend on donations just to survive.
UPDATE: Patreon has backtracked on its promised changes, and now says it will not implement them:
More information here:
We messed up. Weâre sorry, and weâre not rolling out the fees change.
You can leave them feedback at the link above on what you recommend they do in the future.
Iâm glad this resolved in a positive way. This shows just what the power of speaking out well, and loud can achieve. I personally have never used Patreon as a donater or as a content creator, but I understand itâs importance for content creators out there.
I know there are more important things out there at the moment, but speaking out for EA, and Bungie to backtrack too. Donât be afraid to speak out, and stay informed. We donât want any more crying racist kid stories.
Nintendo Consoles Through the GenerationsÂ
Had the idea of âwhat if I did models of the Nintendo consoles as if they were rendered on themselves?â and I did just that!
I plan on uploading timelapses of the process for each one. I have other timelapses on my youtube channel right now! Check it out, if youâd like! Â
