Interview with the Vampire Don't Be Afraid, Just Start the Tape

Picture this with me, beloved: A chapel in the outskirts of a town called Kutná Hora.

In the year 1278, the King of Bohemia dispatched an abbot of the Cistercian order to Jerusalem, who brought back with him a jar of earth from Golgotha, the hill of skulls.

It was here that they put the nails through the carpenter’s hands, and he scattered this earth upon the monastery cemetery at Sedlec. The rumor of it traveled as such rumors do, which is to say with a velocity that has nothing whatsoever to do with the Almighty and everything to do with the terror of dying in unsanctified ground.

A half-blind ascetic thus descends into the subterranean belly of a provincial chapel, tasked by his superiors with exhuming forty thousand skeletons from the saturated earth.

( Or perhaps seventy thousand? One hears varying accounts, and I confess I have never troubled myself to verify them. )

imo by far the funniest thing about daniel making it to being a worldwide bestseller and then dating armand is that not only does it look like he invented a guy and then forced his controversially young boyfriend to pretend to be that fictional guy, he picked the villain. from every iwtv citizen’s perspective, a world renowned journalist wrote a novel analyzing the cycles of abuse from the perspective of one guy and his evil ass boyfriend, and then declared to the public that he, daniel molloy, can in fact handle allat

Daniel dismisses the affair as a "capitalist seizure," which conveniently absolves me from the pageantry. Still, there is some grim poetry in celebrating a saint who was clubbed and beheaded on the Via Flaminia.

The city at night on the saint's feast offers its own theatre; the streets will be teeming with those begging to be swept away by two dark strangers. What is a night of passion, after all, without a hunt? It is the modest gestures that keep a fledgling sharp. And I wouldn't mind a walk thereafter. Just to be... possessed, publicly. Hand in hand along the East River. Though I am hesitant to initiate it, lest he find it pedestrian.

We are navigating a fragile peace, he and I. One could only hope the air of love beckons a cessation of hostilities for the evening.

I have procured a small token for the truce. Nothing that would invite a tirade on consumerism, just a rare recording of a radio broadcast he thought lost to the archives.

IWTV Scent Profiles: Armand

Theme: “If I am an angel, paint me with black wings.” 

Armand on incense, leather, and the fine art of looking innocent.

Armand reads like: cathedral smoke + antique velvet + cold skin + expensive paper + “I haven’t slept since the 1500s”. So his perfume wardrobe is heavy on incense/resins, amber woods, old roses, myrrh, smoky tea, leather, with the occasional eerily clean “I’m harmless” facade.

I’m a beauty fiend that’s got an expertise on perfume. If you’ve followed my shenanigans before, you know I like to start with the most difficult. Of the core four, this is Armand as he’s the one we know the least about due to his being the most private.

Armand is Venice-Paris raised so of all the guys he’d have the most extravagant tastes and grooming rituals as these cities are infamous for being stages for extravagant human beauty. Historically if you were in these places you were the crème of the crème when it came to eye candy. You were stylish, devastating to look at, your looks were your main source of money if not exclusively, your entire life was beauty even death.

Without further ado, his royal pain’s scent roster:

The Basics/Daytime Rotation:

Serge Lutens – La Myrrhe: dark, sacred resin—iconography and menace in one bottle.

Comme des Garçons – Avignon: straight-up church incense; calm, severe, devotional. Angel outfit, devil agenda. In a crisp white shirt it becomes wrong in the hottest way: priestly + monstrous. It makes Daniel feel like he’s crossing a line just by standing too close. You don’t know if you’re in heaven or about to meet your maker with this one. This would be Armand’s “daytime” choice. How Armand wears it: clean, minimal, almost clinical. White. No jewelry. Then he leans in and Daniel’s brain forgets its own name.

Amouage – Interlude Man (or Interlude Black Iris): smoke + resin + drama; the “I arrived and everyone is doomed” cloud. A party scent for him I think.

Guerlain – Shalimar (EDP): vintage sensuality; leathery vanilla/incense that feels like old money and old sin. This one plays BIG on Armand’s unusual androgyny too. He’d have BARRELS of the OG version too.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian – Oud Satin Mood: plush rose-oud; velvet curtains, jeweled rings, soft control.

“Dubai-polished Armand” (immaculate, rich, unreal)

Amouage – Reflection Man: luminous, soapy-white-floral woods; angelic presentation, predator underneath.

Frederic Malle – Portrait of a Lady: rose + patchouli + depth; elegant, crushing, unforgettable.

Tom Ford – Oud Wood: smooth, expensive-wood minimalism; quiet power.

“1970s downtown / coven leader” (dirty glamour)

Serge Lutens – Ambre Sultan: dense amber resins; old apartments, old secrets.

Le Labo – Patchouli 24: smoky/leathery “campfire chic”; manipulative warmth.

Orto Parisi – Boccanera: dark cocoa/woods/spice; sensual but unsettling.

The “Daniel-bait” options (soft trap, close-range)…this is his trying to appeal to Daniel. All are jovial but still keep his haunting smoke.

Diptyque – Eau Duelle: incense-vanilla that stays intimate—come closer energy. Park dates.

Hermès – Eau des Merveilles: amber-wood, salty sparkle; understated magnetism. Dinner dates and holidays.

Lalique - Encre Noir: Inky vetiver + elegant gloom…make out sessions during night school in the library or computer lab.

Tauer - L’air du Desert Marocain. Spiced amber air…timeless, cinematic, older than your country aura. The most priceless of antiques has a pulses. He’d wear this at home with Daniel. Thirst-trap/Moto Papi Armand (date night, maneater, leather + resin)

1) Dior – Leather Oud

Smoky leather + oud-resin darkness. “Come closer, worse will happen.” This is the scent he’d wear dating Lestat. There’s something awkwardly angry about this one but it still keeps Armand’s haunting sexiness that even Lestat doesn’t question. It’s honest but a little messy. There’s no mask but there’s no freedom yet (Cuir Mauresque is Armand full powered).

2) Tom Ford – Tuscan Leather

Ruthless leather (with that addictive edge). Confidence, dominance, hot menace…this would be Armand being “basic”. There’s nothing basic about this scent except the designer house name. However he’d a frequent patron of the house, not so much for himself but for Daniel. If Tom Ford tailored in the ‘80s before working for designer houses, you can bet Armand would hire his services to make suits for Daniel. Since Daniel had less occasions to dress up but Armand being a loyal fan would find ways to patronize…this is how he’d do that. I would say this is Armand when he’s not trying to be nice or read that (for that he’d use the Avignon).

3) Serge Lutens – Cuir Mauresque

Incense + leather + honeyed resinous warmth that feels antique, intimate, and unreasonably expensive. Like being trapped in a gorgeous antique…this would be his training Daniel, Pavlov’s Dogs style. When I sniffed this one I thought this is what a bratty sub would melt into the ground for if their dom walked with it. It hits like you’re being spanked with a fancy leather strap at church. This scent for Armand would have people bouncing on him begging to be fucked (or to fuck him). So he’d use it intentionally on one target he wants to go mating season ravenous. This and the white outfits it would immediately send a message to Daniel to not bother arguing as it’s that hot. This is the one that hits Daniel like: oh no. oh NO. The scent that would make Daniel chop off his left nut for Armand, without a second thought. It reads like: a velvet confession in a locked room. Daniel’s body clocks it before his brain can form a sentence. It’s that unholy. How Armand wears it: one spray under the shirt + a touch at the wrists. Not loud. Predatory-soft. He only needs one spritz and everyone’s deceased but he’s too controlled to wear this in public. I’m also convinced that after noting his relationships with his other lovers that he’d only wear this one for Daniel and would have an association with it because of Daniel due to this scent requiring a certain safety/trust. Armand doesn’t trust many but Daniel’s the closest.

4) Etat Libre d’Orange – Rien

Austere leather/incense/aldehydic bite. Feral elegance. Cold, erotic, severe. This would be his “clubbing scent”. Sexy but has a distance. Sharp, austere leather/incense with a cold edge—like immaculate tailoring hiding a knife. White clothes make it feel unnatural...this is his scent while dating Louis. There’s a little love in it but this scent is mostly stone cold survival using lust as the snare. It lacks the monsterous honesty of Cuir Mauresque.

5) Maison Francis Kurkdjian – Oud Satin Mood

Velvet rose-oud sweetness—the “I’ll ruin you nicely” option. (More seductive than scary). This is Armand x Marius or when Armand plays “kitty mew mew” (the cute twink act). Jailbait Armand. It’s dominated control. Controlled dominance. Happy Armand. He might even wear this with the Hermes for a party or bonding session with his adopted family (Sybelle and Benji). It’s happy but for an unusual type of monster. It’s not innocent but it can do kindness and sweetness. It’s the youngest and most innocent of Armand’s monsters. Stubborn happiness that’s not let its guard down or bared its heart out.

Molloy’s scent wardrobe follows this one, naturally. That one was as hard as this one but for different reasons. I had to focus on keeping a small wardrobe as Daniel would never have a large set unlike Armand. I had to account for Armand in Daniel’s choices because that’s the reason his scent wardrobe would exist in the first place. Finally, I had to keep the idea of Daniel being an immortal spring. Daniel’s power is his electricity, his joy, the sweetness, his never ending curiosity…how can a man read forever young without that being infantile…how can he remain the “beautiful boy” at 71? Why do we look at him older now and still think he’s the coolest guy ever? How does he still exude that energy even in death/immortality? Those are my questions with the next one and it will be up after this so if you’re curious, tag along! 😘
