In the future, internet advertisers will have been run into the sea like the dogs they are. After a nearly uninterrupted half-century of stealing our very souls from our body in order to push some ads about buying casino-enabled hearing aids, the decent parts of humanity will finally decide that's it.
How will it happen? Not law enforcement, that's for sure. Go scroll down on your local newspaper's website. How long does it take until you get an ad that's a complete bullshit scam? I'm guessing about two seconds. If something could have been done, even by Dirty Harryesque vigilantes, then something would have been done by now. No, I think they're just going to make the ads too good.
I would like you to imagine now a bumper sticker, on the car in front of you. Perhaps you have become accustomed to getting incredibly angry at bumper stickers throughout the years. They invariably display some sentiment that you disagree with. The only bumper sticker I agree with says "I brake for reasonably priced used cars," and even then I don't like the idea of having a rival on the streets so close to me in case I find a cheap Dart or something.
Advertisers will notice this. As flexible display technology becomes better, some asshole is going to roll out the smart bumper sticker. When you pull up behind a car with one of these bumper stickers, it'll scan your car, look up your advertising profile, and display an opinion that you agree with.
Humanity cannot survive such a turn of events. On the internet, a bunch of fake people agreeing with you is just taken in stride. They're not real, you rationalize, looking at their profile pictures with two pupils and exactly 13 fingers. A bumper sticker is real. A bumper sticker is in-group, out-group, monkey psychology shit. You'll go to work convinced that everyone else agrees with your fucked-up crackpot opinions, no matter how cracked those pots are.
Once you are emboldened enough to make contact with the driver in front of you, that's when the whole scam will evaporate. You'll figure out that, actually, the Dodge Durango in front of you does not break for reasonably-priced used cars. There will be harsh words. There will be open violence. And from the ashes of our civilization, we'll build a new, better world, without the kind of marketing assholes who would dare to make your bumper ever say anything other than "Honk if you love boobies."
