I was listening to an art podcast and I heard someone use ācreative hibernationā as a term to describe a period of time when your creative energy and flow of ideas is slowing down.
Honestly, it sounds so much better thanĀ āart blockā. To me,Ā ācreative hibernationā sounds less like a negative thing and more like an organic part of the creative process.Ā
āArt blockā sounds very definite. They sound like something you MUST actively fight against to break them down in order to continue.Ā āHibernationā on the other hand sounds more like a thing that happens every now and then but that will go away on its own when itās time. Itās a stage of gathering energy for the next creative pursuit. Art block on the other hand is an artificial, mental block that actually just seems to solidify the more you treat it like an obstacle to get around.
All creative people go through this type of slowing down all the time and it is completely alright. I thought I would share this because I think the right kind of mentality is actually one of the most important things of recovering your creative energy.
I needed this.

Did you know that after they switched to blind auditions, major symphony orchestras hired women between 30% to 55% more? Before bringing in āblind auditionsā with a screen to conceal the the candidate, women in the top 5 major orchestras made up less than 5% of the musicians performing.
so I believe it was actually more complicated than that, in interesting ways. Because at first, when they did blind auditions, they were STILL hiring more men.
ā¦Then they put down a carpet, so that high heels didnāt clack on the floor,Ā and BOOM women were suddenly getting hired.
The testers didnāt even know thatās what they were picking up on, which just goes to show how tiny of a cue it takes for misogyny to kick in.
The case of blind auditions for orchestras and how it dramatically changed the gender makeup of orchestras is a very illuminating example of gender bias, and an interesting possible way of countering it.
You can be sexist without knowing it. You can be racist without knowing it. This is not a moral failing; it is a moral imperative to remember that you are fallible, and take steps to limit the damage your squishy ape brainās foibles can cause.
I havent seen anyone talk about this yet so im making a post.Ā
So lets say youāre researching something for a paper (or just for fun) and the research paper you want to read is behind a paywall, or the site makes you create a account first, or makes you pay to download, or limits you to only 5 free articles, or otherwise makes it difficult for you to read what you want.

Varying Your Body Types
By me, Sara D. (Heh.)
I think itās very important for artists to vary the types of bodies they draw! Not only does it add visual interest and diversity, but different body types can enhance your characters! (Plus itās more realistic; when was the last time you walked down the street and everyone had the same body type?) I know I have a hard time drawing different bodies, especially with men, so Iām making this tutorial to teach myself as well (Iāve heard the best way to cement learning something is to teach someone else).
So! Bodies! Iām going to use women for this tutorial because I feel they have more variety in their bodies. One of the most obvious ways bodies differ is in their amount of fat.

On average, people store fat mostly in core areas like the bust, the waist, and the hips. It is important to remember that people gain and lose weight differently, and this is true no matter how fat or skinny one gets. However, these are common places people store fat:
The face and neck can be immediate indicators as to how much fat the rest of the body has; when someone loses or gains weight, itās initially obvious in the face. This is possibly because the eye is (usually) drawn first to the face.
In addition to differences in the amount of body fat, bodies vary vastly in their proportions. The two main ways they differ is skeletally and in fat distribution. The hip to shoulder ratio is skeletal, and someone with wider shoulders might look more powerful or masculine, and someone with wider hips might look more grounded or feminine.
The torso to legs ratio is also a skeletal ratio. Someone with long legs in comparison with their torso might look taller than someone of the same height with a long torso, and they might also look skinnier.
(I say as I finally get some visual variety all up in here.)
Because the hips are also one of the places with the most weight gain in women, large hips can also be a matter of fat distribution. The three main places where the fat ratio really matters is in the bust, the waist and the hips (making up the core of the body).
While men usually carry weight in the belly area, the fat distribution can really vary with women. Some women carry more weight in the bust, some in the belly, and some in the hips/thighs. Some women carry more weight in two areas, like the bust and the hips, the bust and the belly, or the belly and the hips. Some women show no obvious bias to any area and carry weight equally.

Taking into account skeletal ratios, fat distribution patterns, a vast human weight range, muscle tone and age, there are endless permutations of body types. It would be a shame if you used only one!
Oh, and that first image looks really interesting as a gif.

I canāt stress enough how much Megamind is a magnificent movie and how much I love it unconditionally. Aside from all the comedy and entertainment, if you analize pretty well many things about the movie, you get a bunch of very interesting important life lessons:
Metroman was theĀ āgifted childā, always pushed into an ideology that they must be perfect, iconic. When Metroman reached his peak, he felt that āideal lifeā was too much and it slowly became a burden to him as he never got the opportunity to follow the life he wanted in the first place in order to pursue the life others wanted for him.
Megamind was raised in a place with wrong influences and was isolated from the very beginning being held as another prisoner just because he looked different. Him becomingĀ āa villainā came from him believing he was one because of the way people treated him by bullying him and labelling him, never given a chance to grow properly.
Roxanne is the person everyone saw as theĀ ādamsel in distressā, yet when all seemed lost, unlike the rest of the citizens of Metrocity, she was the only person trying to find a way to change things. She never stopped looking for clues and possible solutions in order to fight back, to stand up for herself and for the rest of the city.
Hal Stewart, aka Titan/Tighten, is theĀ person you thought you knew, the kind of person you have interacted on a daily basis, an ordinary person, the one you never imagined could become such a dangerous threat when suddenly given power and when they donāt get what they thought they deserved just because they wereĀ āniceā.
Minion is the love and support we all deserve.
Have I mentioned how much of a nerd I am for Megamind?
Hot take: Megamind came out like five years too early, it wouldāve EXPLODED now in meme culture
