Tuira Kayapó brandished her machete in the face of a government official who was trying to convince indigenous leaders to accept a mega-dam project in the Amazon, 1989
“Electricity won’t give us food. We need the rivers to flow freely. Don’t talk to us about relieving our ‘poverty’ – we are the richest people in Brazil. We are Indians.”
part of kayapó’s speech during this event
also! she’s still alive! that sort of thing is always worth pointing out to show that we really aren’t too far removed from events like this! here’s a 2019 photo of her:
I just checked, she passed away in August 2024 - but not before working with a filmmaker to make an hour long movie where she explains her life and her activism. If you want to hear what she has to say for herself, here’s the opportunity.
Movie is ‘Tuire Kayapó’ (First Contact) by Pınar Yolaçan, in case the link breaks
It is hard to express the horror I feel when seeing the decline of critical thinking across the internet.
Initially I felt it was maybe people not being able to analyse the author’s perspective or failing to read between the lines, but I feel recently it’s people straight up not being able to understand the written text in front of them in a literal sense.
This is even more frustrating in a political context, particularly when discussions are happening between people with opposing views, and is made much worse by the way social media works.
There’s been a problem on here recently with people expecting folk to cover off every possible tangent and every nuance for any given topic. This is a huge issue in left-wing politics because it’s treated like a loyalty test. People with big egos like to play ‘holier-than-thou’ in an attempt to bolster their own reputation of supposed progressiveness, often at the expense of a productive conversation with people who maybe aren’t as politically involved.
I’m just musing at the moment, but out of context discussions that are designed to appeal to people who aren’t already left wing, are often criticised for not immediately pushing entrenched left wing views immediately.
Relating it to the post above, folk not being able to critically think about why you should take different approaches to different people when talking politics is really frustrating.

I think what most annoys me most about the "nerd vs jock" discourse that twitter has every week is that for some reason, people think that a lot of self proclaimed "nerdy" men being absolutely horrible towards women somehow means that your average fratbro being a rapist is a lie made up by Hollywood, when like two type of horrible men can exist actually. Maybe even more.
i notice this alot in like vaguely leftist internet spaces, where people notice that there's a lot of right wing rhetoric in nerdy spaces (gamergate/comicgate/most American anime discourse) which is true, but somehow come to the conclusion that, that means all jocks are actually leftist himbo golden retrievers which like. Has never been true. And very much feels it comes from the mentality that "if two groups of people are mad at each other than one of them must be good and one of them must be evil" as if like. Republicans never argue with each other.
in general every (accurate) criticism of white male nerd culture also very much applies to white male frat culture, like it's true that alot of white male nerd spaces get extremely angry at the idea of black people or gay people EXISTING in the same spaces as them, but I think it's strange when people use that to "prove" that fraternities are inclusive and queer friendly, when not only are they on average extremely white and homophobic, but also fraternities are by design exclusive. That's kind of the point.
We need to kill everyone who works at youtube yesterday.

On the day of Dick Cheney’s death, I’m thinking about a lot of horrible consequences of his actions, but I’m also thinking about Lauren Hough telling Dick Cheney to waterboard her “if it makes him feel better” when she repaired his cable.

hi my name is anonymous asker, but you can call me anon. i'm a big fan of your posts and i couldn't help but notice in your latest one that you failed to clarify a couple points. one with good faith would fill these blanks, but as someone who values journalistic integrity i must ask if you actually support the act of launching the state of connecticut into the sun for fun?
it’s actually wild how terrified of the general public most usamericans are. like you don’t realize it if you’re someone who mostly walks and takes transit and spends a lot of time in populous public spaces but then you talk to one of the thousands of people that seemingly never set foot in any public space besides a parking garage or a starbucks and you suddenly understand why it’s so easy for fascist rhetoric about the dangerous alien to take root. this country’s median voter pretty much never interacts with strangers who aren’t their coworkers or people they met on dating apps
saw a post on instagram that was literally someone citing statistics saying public transit is one of the safest travel options out there and the comments were literally just “ummmmm op this is so ableist and misogynistic of you :) don’t you know the average public transit user is a dangerous violent criminal who wants to set you on fire :)))”
it must be so terrifying and sad to go through life convinced if you set foot outside your car in public or interact with people outside your nuclear family you’ll instantly be raped and robbed by the Evil Poors no wonder so many of these people are reactionary tar pits
Eternally relevant read is True Crime is Rotting Our Brains by Emma Berquist, a woman who actually experienced a (rare!) stranger-attack while just walking outside, and thinks that people who panic about this shit need to chill the fuck ouuuuuutt and also recognize how much they're using it to launder their bigotries
Edit: I've attempted to add this link at least three times and Tumblr is being stubborn, so let me try posting it on its own:
