Rewatching a shounen show you watched as kid as an adult is such a funny introspective experience, because as a 12 year old kid I only cared about the hype badass fight between Hollow Ichigo & Ulquiorra and I got bored with all the mushy "overly-wordy" scenes between Ulquiorra & Orihime.

But now as an adult watching, I just skip the entire fight and go straight to the scene where Ulquiorra, who started out as the embodiment of nihilism and the captor of a girl who's the complete opposite of nihilistic, reflects on just how invested he has become in the girl he previously deemed as so insignificant and how hearing about her views and feelings has made him question what he believed in and by the end he’s technically not even fighting Ichigo anymore, he's fighting himself and trying to prove to himself that the girl is wrong and that the concept of a “heart” doesn’t exist, only for him to realize that there was a heart being born in him all along because of her, but that realization only hit him a few seconds before his death and we don't actually see what he does with that new information and how it changes him then I sigh and think to myself about how they're basically a tragic version of The Beauty and the Beast.

Ulquihime is great because while they didn't have enough time to be fully in love, all the love Ulquiorra was capable of was exclusively hers and all the heart and soul deep connection with someone who sees and loves only her that Inoue longed her whole life for was made only with him.

In a brief window of time they have the most intense, intimate relationship of the series, picking each other apart, challenging each other, and ultimately becoming the ultimate realization of each other's deepest wants and desires.
