I've seen a few comments now like "but without chatGPT I don't know what to make for dinner" or "but character.ai is vital to my mental health" and those are not arguments for genAI. They're signs that you need to sort yourself out.
An adult human being should be able to decide what to have for dinner. Yes, some days it's rough and you don't wanna, but the point is, you can do it. And if you can't, you can learn. Hell, make post-it notes with dinner options, stick them on a dart board, and on days when you really can't decide, throw a dart.
You'd really rather put these decisions in the hands of an AI? As in, a company? And you don't see the issues with that? You don't see how easy that makes it for companies to manipulate you, influence your choices and your spending and your entire life?
And if your mental health relies on talking to a robot about your issues "because it listens and cares" - no, it doesn't. It can't listen. It can't care. It's lying to you. It's parroting phrases said by other people in similar contexts. It's an elaborate predictive text machine.
And again, you're just giving all of this information about yourself to a company. A company that wants to make money and likely has no compunctions about selling your data. You're trusting a software run by a company. And you don't think that'll be used to manipulate you? I've got a bridge to sell you.
What you need is actual human connection with other humans. And if you don't know how to connect with other humans then it's time to learn. Start by caring about other people. Take a genuine interest in them. Listen to them. That's how you connect. Not by treating others as entities to dump all your issues on or monologue at about your boring life. Sure, character.ai will put up with that and humour you, but there's literally nothing genuine about it and you will never ever learn to make actual friends.
Relying on genAI for any of this means you'll never learn, in fact you'll get worse, and if genAI ever goes away or you find yourself without access to a computer/phone/internet or the people running chatGPT or character.ai take down the website or put it behind a paywall, you'll be completely adrift. You are handing control of your life over to a piece of software run by a business. Instead of developing skills and independence you're just handing control over to someone else, someone who by the way does not care about you, someone who's only here to make money.
"But some people need--" to stop infantilising themselves, to start taking responsibility and control of their own life, to realise that they have agency and power, to learn that agency and control are not the same as blame and guilt and that someone trying to help them reclaim control is not trying to blame them for their situation.
People, yes even people with your exact diagnosis or background or medical history, were living and making decisions and dealing with their issues and going to therapy and learning and coping for millennia prior to 2022. As in, before genAI was even an option. You can do it. Trust me.
just my humble attempt at raging against the machine
i made a follow up! if this blows up, pls remember it is illegal to be mean to me. and i am a small artist you can give money to btw ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

*Whatever happens to musicians will happen to everybody
I cannot recommend enough that we decouple our music listening from Spotify, and if possible, generally try to just get away from relying on streaming services for our music needs full stop.
It is tremendously convenient to have a streaming service with a consistent account that follows you across devices, I know, but the streaming model has been absolutely terrible for actual working musicians, and it continues to get worse year over year as services enshittify and push harder and harder to replace all those annoying expensive human artists who you have to pay royalties (even if they only ever pay a pittance) with generative AI music that can be shat out infinitely and crowd out the real art.
If you pick your favourite musician and play all of their music continuously on a loop as your ONLY music listening for an entire year on Spotify, you would probably STILL put more money directly in that artist's pocket if you pirated their entire discography and sent them five bucks on Venmo.
If at all possible, buy your music directly from the artists you love. Apple or Amazon ain't much better than Spotify ethically, but a direct sale on those platforms at least ACTUALLY puts some money in the artists' pockets, and if you can buy from them more directly through their websites or something like Bandcamp, so much the better.
It can be annoying to have to maintain a file library on your own devices, rather than relying on the streaming services to organize and make everything available for you, but there are a lot of free music library apps out there you can use to make it easier, and which can often also synchronize your playlists and music libraries across your devices. I personally use MusicBee for music and podcasts, and I'm very happy with it, but there are lots of other options.
It is time to return to the old ways. It is time to rebuild the MP3 libraries.
God damn I'm so glad people are finally waking up to how shitty streaming music really is. I've only ever wanted my music stored locally on my device so that no one can take it away from me and I know I'm not giving money to a middle man that screws over the artists.

hey peeps, i would be calling your doctors STAT to see if you're in the clear about where your drugs are manufactured
then i would definitely be call your representatives and bitch them a new asshole
people are legit going to die because of this
also surgeries??? anesthesia? where is that medicine from? like this is so fucked up
The US largely imports pharmaceutical products from India and Europe.
Now, today is September 26th, and this is supposed to go into effect on October 1st, which is like nine months in the warped dog-years time of the Trump administration. And it's very possible he'll walk it back or conveniently forget about it, which happens pretty frequently.
Which means that calling your reps now may actually make a difference in whether this kills people.
Step 1: Search up the generic name for whatever meds you take, then call your pharmacist - not your primary - and ask where it comes from and whether any part of it is manufactured in the US. THEN call your primary and tell them to pre-order your next round, even if you're not due yet. (They might try to tell you they can't do that. They can.)
Step 2: Call your reps - by now you should be calling them so often they're one of the top numbers saved in your phone, but you can also find them very easily here - and tell them specifically that you are worried about the financial impact on American business this will have and ask them what they plan to do about it. Because sadly, concerns about money and saving their own skin will probably get their attention faster than any concerns about the harm it will do to vulnerable individuals.
NONE OF THIS IS INEVITABLE. I'm serious, call your reps. We've gotten other Orwellian nightmare shit walked back or shot down - because remember that we're not dealing with actual politics anymore, we're dealing with a spineless madman with late stage dementia who's favorite pastime is Just Saying Things To Say Things - and we can get this shot down too.
CALL YOUR REPS!!!

Copyright class actions could financially ruin AI industry, trade groups say.
AI industry groups are urging an appeals court to block what they say is the largest copyright class action ever certified. They’ve warned that a single lawsuit raised by three authors over Anthropic’s AI training now threatens to “financially ruin” the entire AI industry if up to 7 million claimants end up joining the litigation and forcing a settlement.
well…darn

ICE raids are starting on Tuesday in Chicago.
Yell “ICE” and “LA MIGRA” to disrupt them. Notify people and use your privilege as a citizen to make ICE’s job as difficult as possible.
Fascism has been here. It’s just loud now. Time to be loud too.
If you cannot attend protests in person, it’s time for you to organize with your community and educate yourself.
Donate to bail funds in your city now. Find the sanctuary cities near you.
Go to libraries. There are groups organizing. Do not let the censorship of TikTok allow these communities to go silent.
What they’re doing to TikTok and the timing of it, whether Trump saves it to make himself look better or he censors it on the doorstep of his new reign, it is intentional.
Trump is expected to issue an emergency executive order regarding the southern US border tomorrow after inauguration.
California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, be ready for ICE and border patrol.
#WTF isn’t Chicago a sanctuary city?
Yes. Trump is targeting sanctuary cities. This report on Chicago was originally a leak, so all sanctuary cities are on alert.
Tom Homan, the incoming "border tsar", has promised a big raid on illegal immigrants in Chicago and elsewhere.
