- Avery is half-white, half-Filipino and is fluent in English and Tagalog and decently proficient in Spanish. Derek is Haitian-Canadian, grew up in Canada and moved to the US for his brief stint in college, and he’s fluent in English and French but his Haitian Creole is not as good (still proficient but not fluent)
- Avery’s last name is DeMayo, unsurprisingly. All of his online friends considered the revelation of the correlation between his username quite hilarious.
- Both of them went to college at some point in their lives. Avery went undecided and ending up dropping out after a few years due to a massive amount of pressure and stress. Derek went for Comp. Sci. and did get a degree, never pursued anything more in that field before AWTDE took place.
- Avery loves physical activity but his depression caused him to lose passion in a lot of things he used to love. He used to be a pretty good skateboarder and soccer player, but dropped out of many of his teams or groups as time went on and he crumbled under academic and familial pressures
- Avery did go to therapy for a while in his college days, but stopped when many of his therapists weren’t right for him or downplayed his issues. He had a bad experience with therapy, but he did get a depression diagnosis and a referral for an ADHD analysis (of which he has but doesn’t have a diagnosis of)
- Avery can fight. He’s taken self-defense and basic combat classes. He’s a little rusty, but he focuses less on pure hits and power and more on strategy and leverage. (He got into it through Minecraft PVP believe it or not, which convinced him to take classes and his strats in-game influenced his fighting style)
- Derek takes absolutely abysmal care of himself, even before AWTDE. Yeah, unfortunately, he was the type to lock himself in his apartment and not come out for days and he would ignore his hygiene, though mostly not on purpose. The responsibility and pressure would build up and stress him out even more.
- Avery needs glasses but never got any. He refuses to get contacts. His prescription is close to Derek’s, but a little worse. Derek’s prescription changed after AWTDE, so his glasses are a little less useful since his eyes got worse.
- Derek has anxiety and some pretty terrible self-esteem. It’s part of the reason why he struggles to hold meaningful connections and why a lot of his faith and passion for the world faded, even long before AWTDE. He couldn’t see the point in a lot of things, in himself. He likely has depression as well, but he can’t unpack that right now. He’s never gone to therapy, a little too intimidated by it.
- Derek finds peace at night. He has a connection to the stars because he had a big astronaut phase as a kid and he has multiple different constellations and galaxies and star maps nearly memorized. It’s probably one of the last things he considers beautiful until he meets Avery.
- Avery maintains a decent social circle, but he doesn’t have anyone he would really consider close to him. He’s lonely. He has been for a while.
- Both of them have some terrible self-worth and are constantly trying to solve their loneliness in self-destructive ways.
- Derek would be taller than Avery if he fixed his posture.
- Derek is worryingly thin. His diet was terrible and continues to be.
- Avery’s parents aren’t around, they were pretty toxic and manipulative to him and he broke contact with them when he went off to college, and continues to not speak with them. They continue to try and reach out, but he doesn’t want to.
- Derek has one sibling, a younger brother, but they haven’t talked in years. Not since… not since their mom passed. It wasn’t a choice, they just drifted apart in the grief. Derek doesn’t realize that his negative emotions in the brief memories of his brother were because of the grief from his mom, hence why his reaction to remembering his mom in Ch3 is much stronger than his reaction to remembering his brother in Ch2
