Society really couldn’t function without them. Anthropologist Robin Nagel did this fabulous ethnography of NYC sanitation workers called Picking Up where she actually became a sanitation worker herself. In NYC alone, there’s fewer than 10,000 sanitation workers dealing with a daily load of about 11,000 tons of garbage and 2,000 tons of recycling. It’s a more dangerous profession than firefighting or police work (cops and fire aren’t even in the top ten most dangerous jobs in the US), and if the sanitation workers aren’t able to do their jobs, cities become unlivable overnight.
(Also you should read that Robin Nagel book, it’s really fascinating. Even if you don’t live in a city, it’s a great read.)
This is REALLY fucking good news. It means those put in prison for consensual gay sex are free. This changes their discharge status; meaning, they will be able to get benefits from the VA that they had been unjustly denied! It means they can travel to other countries (it was a felony), not get fucked out of jobs because of being a felon and so much more!
if you’re telling israelis who are actually living this war that they deserve hamas attacks and have blood on their hands because of the actions of their government, i want you to tell me what the fuck country you live in where you don’t have blood on yours.
if every israeli is responsible for the actions of netanyahu and his predecessors, by god, tell me what your country is so that i can tell you how much blood is flowing from your hands onto your keyboard even as you type your fucking bullshit.
I don't know if this was in the context of American elections, but I'd just like to point out that for all of the girls and women who have been forced to give birth after Dobbs due to Trump appointing 1/3 of the Supreme Court, there were catastrophic consequences with his victory. Oh, and I'm sure the children permanently traumatized by the Trump administration's family separation policy at the border must count. And the thousands upon thousands of needless deaths from COVID after Trump knowingly downplayed a deadly virus. Need I go on?
I have been through a fair number of elections at this point and they absolutely have not been all portrayed as the most important election ever. They’ve been portrayed as important, because they are, but not as consequential as they have been since 2016. I hate this downplaying of things like what we’re dealing with now is what it’s always like. It’s not. Trump and what he’s wrought is a unique threat and deserves to be treated as such.
Yeeeeeah, I mean, the 2000 election was portrayed as a "the lower taxes guy or the environment guy" election and it wasn't particularly contentious or high stakes. No one expected it to turn into a shit show that led to 9/11. The 2004 election was portrayed as, "this guy or that loser lol," because John Kerry was a pretty weak candidate running against a sitting president. The 2008 election was portrayed as meaningful because the first black candidate was THE candidate, and as important because of that meaning, and you know what, it was. But that meaning wasn't portrayed as catastrophic by any means. The 2012 election was pretty chill because people took Mitt Romney about as seriously as they did John Kerry, and he lost pretty badly. It was 2016 that felt suddenly important and potentially catastrophic, partly because we saw the way social media propaganda had affected the Brexit vote already, and because of how good Trump's numbers were despite all his blatant racism and fascist speeches. 2020 was important and not just potentially catastrophic, but potentially even more catastrophic than the 4 preceding years had already been. And the legacy of that presidency is why this upcoming election is so important and potentially catastrophic too. And that's just this century; I haven't even gone back to Clinton v. Dole and Clinton v. Bush or Bush v. Dukakis etc., none of which were portrayed as catastrophic. Neither were either of Reagan's campaigns, and that presidency sure was catastrophic if you were lower middle class or a vet or had AIDS.
So yeah, anyone saying that every election is portrayed as the most important election ever either has a short memory or is too young to remember past only a couple of them. Pro tip: sometimes it's useful to have older people around who remember things you weren't there for. Maybe listen to them.
So there was a pogrom against jewish people in Los Angeles yesterday. Dont know what else to say except that anyone who bothers to listen to jewish people saw this coming a long way away
Violent clashes broke out in the Pico-Robertson area as pro-Palestinian protesters encountered counter-protesters.
Targeting a Synagogue for protest* and barring people from worship - not to even get started on the physical assault - is an act of violent antisemitism. You are not pro-Palestine for doing this, you just hate Jewish people.
Those of us advocating for Palestine have a responsibility to not only condemn these actions and actions like it, but actively take steps to protect Jewish people everywhere.
Palestinian freedom and safety and Jewish freedom and safety are not diametrically opposed. They are, arguably, fundamentally linked. We are responsible for doing better - and it is our duty to stop this from every happening again.
*Also, as OP said: this is not a protest, it was a pogrom
In their new film, "Guns & Moses," Salvador and Nina Litvak portray an Orthodox Jew like no other.
Go to page 6 and you'll see a page exactly like this-
I've seen people tie race to the 'Anglo'* part. That's not what that means. It means English speaking. The group that does this is called 'My Home in Israel'.
A pro-Palestinian protest at L.A. synagogue Adas Torah in Pico-Robertson, on the city’s Westside, was about West Bank real estate sales.
The event at Adas Torah was organized by My Home In Israel, a real estate company that specializes in helping American Jews buy property in Israel. The organization’s website lists Israeli homes ranging from between $435,000 and $4.1 million, the vast majority of which are inside the Green Line, the pre-1967 Israeli border.
At least one piece of property was for sale on the company’s website at the time of publication. It’s located in Efrat, an Israeli settlement in the West Bank.
It’s not clear whether the distinction between internationally recognized Israeli land and West Bank settlements — generally considered in violation of international law, though Israel disputes that — would make a difference to the protest’s organizers. On a digital flyer announcing the protest, Palestinian Youth Movement said the seminar promoted “settler expansion.”
So regardless, this was going to be seen as 'settler expansion' regardless of how many homes were actually in the West Bank being sold. The ad itself seems to be about Tel Aviv, given the high rises and beach front.
Kind of gives me 'Jews will not replace us' vibes.
And this is from Code Pink (antisemitism warning)
You legit have a call to violence from Code Pink here. So yeah, given that no one bothered to actually specify anything and assume the absolute worst because they don't see Israelis and/or Jews as worthy of such consideration, this is how we got the violence from the pogrom. And you know, the call to violence.
I can absolutely agree expansion in the West Bank is bad. But clearly, that's not what this was about, so don't try me. If it was, they would have been specific in their criticism and done far better to express it without immediately jumping to violence. It was just an excuse-the propaganda train keeps rolling, people don't care to actually look into things and are far more content being used as a weapon to harm because they think themselves right. Violence was the goal here. To harm Jews. I mean, protesters attacked Jewish people outside a Kosher Bagel store.
*If anyone from Israel can chime in-my current source on the matter is from here.
Oh another thought-Code Pink is a Russian/Chinese asset and want Ukraine to give up. There's nothing from them on Russians taking Ukrainian homes (Like Crimea-in fact, they're mad the US doesn't recognize it as part of Russia-from the horse's mouth), so yeah, they're full of shit.
I saw some additional explanation/really important context about this and now unfortunately I can’t find who it was that posted it, but I will add these:
I love how in In The Cards Worf is just standing in the corner meticulously inspecting Sisko's wall art after they've eaten dinner. Sisko said I will invite Worf and he will eat and be included in our little night but we will not be forcing him to talk or directly participate. Love it. That's solidarity, babe
I think an easy way to sum up american domestic architecture is that if you are remodeling and older bathroom you have to watch for razor blades in the walls
What could possibly be more american than creating a disposable version of a product (safety razor vs straight razor), determining that the waste generated was both dangerous (sharp!) and compact (flat!), and that the best solution was to just.. put a hole to stuff them in the walls and make it the next generation’s problem
#a couple years back there were news stories about renovations to an old commercial building where they opened a wall #and it was full of HUMAN TEETH
#there used to be a dentist's office in the building and it seems the dentist was using this same disposal 'solution' with pulled teeth
#and apparently this was at least the third WALL FULL OF TEETH discovered in the state of georgia #just all sorts of creepiness being shoved into the walls in the early to mid 20th century i guess
Ever since I realized that HGTV's "Ugliest House in America" doesn't pick the ugliest house, it picks the easiest one, that also fits the renovation budget of $150K, I don't bother watching the finale. I actually loved this house as it was, but they picked it to be redone by designer Alison Victoria. Here are the befores and afters. This fairytale retro home was blue outside.
It's white now.
Granted, the quirky little cottage was colorful, and I guess it didn't fit owners Joe & Jack's taste. The round tower foyer was yellow with pink carpeting. It was nicknamed "The Barbie House." Then, why did they buy it? And, why didn't they repaint some of it?
Look at it now. Meh.
The pink living room walls matched the pink carpet. After seeing the other homes in the competition, truthfully, this one looked good.
TBH, I think that HGTV got a good chunk of their budget back, b/c they didn't do much reno with this house. This was just paint, new furniture, and wallpaper.
Luckily, she kept the round dining nook and glass block.
But, Joe & Jack did kind of embrace the quirkiness- look at the funky mannequin.
The wall was opened to accommodate the new modern kitchen. And, new built-in seating was added.
I loved these cabinets so much.
They're gone.
I don't know, I like this. It's cozy.
Don't like this.
This was original retro. Look at the cool floor and the curvy counter. I loved this house. There had to be a way to upgrade and preserve it. It's architectural history.
Reconfigured, bland, and modern. I can't believe the original retro design was destroyed in favor of this. It had personality before.
The bath had original turquoise fixtures. HGTV called it a "turquoise terror."
Reconfigured. I wouldn't have minded the rearranging, but the gray, black & white is so modern/cliche.
This room had character.
Well, it's so boring now, it would put certainly you to sleep.
They don't show the before deck, but Alison commissioned this mural for the floor. So,there you have it. The winner and its reno.
I have no word for how much this infuriates me. the beige. THE BEIGE. They made it heterosexual. oh my god they took that wonderful unique and fun house and THEY MADE THAT SHIT BEIGE.
THIS is what I mean when I say that the worst style sin you can ever commit is to be fucking boring.
What they did to this house is the embodiment of the Republican agenda. Oh my god.
I need to go sit down somewhere.
