unfortunately i dont think its queerbaiting if the creator is just so terminally heterosexual that they never remotely considered the same gender relationship their show is centered around could be read as romantic. it is deeply painful however.
Maybe accidental queer baiting? The way someone may not mean to say something rude, but it may come off rude, so it's rude. Frustrating either way.
Not being a dick, just a friendly clarification.
By definition you can't accidentally queerbait. Queerbaiting is specifically using a same sex pair from the show to market the show to queer audiences with no intention of ever following through on a romantic relationship.
There is officially licensed Destiel merch signed off on by Kripke. Teen Wolf had a commercial with the actors for Derek and Stiles draped over each other talking about being "on a ship." Both shows actively used scenes between them as marketing while actively mocking fans for wanting them together. Sherlock has multiple characters refer to Johnlock as a couple, including characters we're supposed to believe are never wrong about human behavior and pushed those scenes in marketing. Then they acted insulted when fans saw them as a couple.
That's queerbaiting.
Done on accident it would just be queer subtext. Done because they had no other choice due to censorship is queer coding.
The specific meaning of the word is really starting to get lost and it's a pretty important one to keep accurate. It describes a very specific phenomenon that was done repeatedly and maliciously for decades and is meant to examine that specifically.
Doing it on accident sucks, but it isn't a tactic of capitalism intentionally intended to suppress queer representation while making money from queer fans.
Reblogging to keep the accurate definition and examples of queerbaiting circulating in the world

[ID from alt: A digital drawing of an entryway to an apartment: showing coat hooks, a door, a light switch and a side table. On the coat hooks hang Harry Du Bois and Kim Kitsuragi's jackets: green and orange, respectively. Text to the right reads, "I like the green. Goes with the orange," with a little heart next to it. The room is in partial darkness, lit from the side as if from another room. /End ID.]
idk guys i think i'm going crazy if i'm honest
I’ve actually been methodically rewatching The Sopranos over the last few months (I fear I’m starting to become one of those annoying people, “no good tv was made after X year!”, apologies to all) and I think one of the things that makes it great is how much strength it has in its convictions. Maybe it’s because David Chase lowkey dislikes the fanbase, idk, but I never felt like the Sopranos let itself be dictated by the most vocal fan response. To be sure, there were some little inside jokes and some episodes which seemed to condemn us, the viewers, for participating. But the focus of the show always felt so tightly controlled.
Contrast that with [redacted], which is so plugged in to the fans and fan reaction that it’s actively changing how the creators write, direct, and structure the show. There’s no strength in its conviction, because the creators are too busy either upholding or fighting against the most vocal fan response that they’ve (forgive me) forgotten the meaning of their own story.
The vision’s been lost.
A few weeks ago I was telling some IRL friends that’s it’s hard to connect with and/or not be disappointed by current tv shows because none of them are Black Sails, and I am still 100% correct.
In retrospect, as much as I love [redacted], maybe making [redacted] [redacted] with these specific circumstances was a bad idea. Idk
Biting my tongue and refusing to enter the discourse bc life is too short but [redacted] [redacted] [redacted] [redacted] [redacted]
The core conceit of Lord of the Rings is pretty funny. You are a twenty three year old in a suburb of Maine. The little bracelet in your grandpa’s attic has an inscription on it that is the password to the world’s entire nuclear arsenal. It is up to you to walk to the only hydraulic press in the world, located in Arizona, before the FBI finds the bracelet, kills you, and enslaves the suburb of Maine you currently live in
Also the 90-year old hobo that your grandpa beat in a rap battle for possession of the bracelet while hiding from the Romanian secret police really loved the bracelet because it was coated in small amounts of LSD and tried to hunt and kill your grandpa to get it back. He was then apprehended by the FBI and instantly gave them your grandpa’s address. Seal Team Six is about to break down your door and shoot you, says your local congressman who can also do cool magic tricks
There's a guy in NY who MIGHT be capable of destroying the codes but won't coz he simply wants to spend time with his wife. So it's up to your grandpa's old friend in rural Ohio to get you the friends capable of finishing the task.
And we must not, at any point, remember the existence of aircraft and ask aloud why we can't just fly to Arizona
We can't use aircraft because the fbi has access to all the flight data how many times do we need to go over this
We need more women characters who are Male Protagonists. You know. Slightly haggard. She's splashing cold water on her face and gripping the edge of the sink staring in the mirror for a minute. She's coping badly with her deadwife
Ok listen I get that people tagging posts with men is a rule of physics on this hellsite but it's kind of bizarre how badly some of you have failed the assignment on this one. A generic male protagonist archetype who is a man is nothing. That's just the normal cliche I'm talking about subverting. What?
Like if you are For Serious headcanoning your blorbo as a trans woman I am kissing you on the head. But I KNOW most of you are not doing that. Come on. For one dollar name a fictional woman. No being a loser does not make him a woman try again
You are an adventurer in a generic fantasy world and you use this weapon!
Do you like it?
YES!!!!!
yes
Eh it's okay
No
NO!!!!!!!
If i don’t rewatch Black Sails within the next 24 hours my doctor says ill die
FINALLY FINISHED
all of the disco elysium skills as harry du bois portraits!
This. This is sick as fuck.
the stages of black sails:
1. initial watching
2. processing
3. panic response to the word 'silver'
4. evangelism
5. finding references in everything you ever read for the rest of your life in any medium from fiction to academia and everything in between
i think it's really disingenuous to judge black sails characters (silver) by their betrayals because this is literally all they do the entire series, betray each other and anticipate betrayals and act accordingly in order to achieve their goals. so the thing that's killing me isn't really a breach of trust that was done by most of them in the end - it's how unbelievably wrong they all are. silver didn't just betray flint and madi, he decided he knew how to make them happy, and he was wrong. max didn't just betray nassau, she thought she was securing its' future, and she was wrong. eleanor didn't just betray vane or flint or her husband or the pirates. rogers didn't just betray eleanor. they all followed their own fears and delusions into submission, into forcing their loved ones into submission, all for a mirage of safety, and they didn't even end up safe. because you can't stay safe when your life depends on an empire's whim, and you willingly gave up your power to say no.
i just think the theme of eleanor using people (specifically and especially black people who she then claims to not see as Something She Owned (see: mr scott AND max)) wouldve hit more home w a black vane (who is the only one she doesnt have Ownership over yet she still tries to exert her power over him!!!!). and i think vanes whole history they gave him in bs wouldve hit more home w a black vane and his based opinions and his relationship with max and with jack and anne and scott and flint wouldve hit so much more home if he was black and it wouldve been like a beautiful foil to julius and madi and all the other black revolutionaries they have and he wouldve been there from the starrrrrrt and we couldve had a Really interesting dynamic and express all of the stuff bs leaves implied!!!! if vane was black. sorry zach mcgowan somebody else shouldve had your role it wouldve elevated the show tenfold!!!! ALAS!!!!! this would have required one (1) black writer to be in the writers room and see the character theyve written as vane and go this needs to be played by a black guy and well they did not have that bc everything is fucked and everybody sucks
season 3 maxanne makes me craaaazyyyy. from basically married cohabitation making future plans together "you're saying this ain't real" to amicable divorce "I trust you" to full on betrayal, not because they love each other any less but because they're both doing what they believe they have to to survive. also max terrified of Anne either dying or losing jack "not sure which is worse" and sleeping with an Eleanor lookalike to distract herself. they don't even know they don't even knowwww that there is nothing important that does not include you!!! they don't know that it feels like it's broken and it's going to hurt but they're going to be okay!!!!
