i could fuck up a raw handsized onion rn
i must learn every language so i can read the cool things they make in the native tongu(s)
just finished watching i love boosters. it hits on a v cool & undertouched theme of the international character of capitalist production, & by extension, proletarian struggle. ties this into the general issue of individual alienation, solvable through the relationships u build w/ others (shown in macrocosm as community building & union organizing). theres a lot of other little flourishes that make it clear this is a communist work - the boosters being generally precluded from the worker, described as having a "bit of" the billionaire fashion designer - & then the Dialectical Materialism Ray. the surreal comedy is deeply cartoonish & reminds me a lot of modern filipino pure-comedies where shit Just Happens bc its funny. everything is so colorful, not just in set design & costuming, but the sound (the goofy brass as the main theme is rly good), the stop motion sequences, & the shit that actually goes down in scenes
what i wish was it was able to unify all the disparate & ambitious ideas it has into something so much tighter on all levels throughout the whole watch. nothing gets the space it deserves, some things get more space than they need, & the structure ends up as a mess that eventually stumbles toward its otherwise beautiful point. the climax & denoument ties together more imagery than i had expected during the watch but its still inelegant, reflective of just how much was put into this movie that ends up as just cruft - it rly didnt help its case
enough time has passed.

Lesbian community I feel like we slept on Kiwi Cyberpunk and not in the sexy way unfortunately
It's always "Lucy this" and "Rebecca that" right well have you considered that
"Kiwi is like 35-40 though" yeah what's not clicking.
Important note on Kiwi's appeal:
now having finished binging tadc & thus being like two to three years late on all forms of discourse on it - one thing i havent seen talked abt much is how tadc models transsexuality as fundamentally relational in form. all prior media depictions of transness ofc implicitly carry this notion, but theres never a point in tadc where the trans character roots their transness as a question of essence - female mind in a male body, etc - & thus it breaks from the normative ideation of transness. which is p sick
overall tho: p well made character drama. it rejigs i have no mouth in an interesting way for entirely different experiential aims. kinda a mess in terms of what it has to say abt abuse & accountability - abstraction thematically occupies the text as a deserving/punitive self-harm, still tragic & delivered with sympathy but like. the only one in the main cast to Get It is the tadc-equivalent to ted (knowers know). still handles it better than most so
if i was better read abt feminist theory i mighta been able to whip up something on the literal penetration politics which occupy satanophany far more than the 'how far is too far gone' themes that the cast actively monologues about. but im not so i wont
and like, if individual pieces of art aren't materially impactful on the world, is capital a Art capital I Important in some big metaphyiscal way? i don't really think so either honestly. i mean i love art and creating art and thinking about art. that's like half of what this blog is about, the fact that i need somewhere to put all my thoughts about works of art. art is hugely important to me and has shaped my life. but ultimately art is just a particular set of social and intellectual activities, and many people live perfectly happy and fufilling lives without ever particularly thinking about it. i think "art is a deep metaphysical need of the soul", "art is what makes us human" etc is just more artist self-flattery
Looking for advice here, genuinely, and feel free to delete if this is an overstep or comes off as aggression or bad faith:
Is it the obligation of marxists to not make work in genres with reactionary origins or make works based on reactionary assumptions (e.g. a cyberpunk book or action movie ttrpg)?
If not, how do you deal with it?
i mean, i think marxists have a lot of obligations and frankly none of them have to do with what kind of art you make. i don't think that matters more or less at all. and, like, respectfully, with no malice--i think you have been on tumblr a lot and held onto a lot of ideas about, like. 'irredeemable media', this looks like an ask from the midst of the steven universe discourse wars with the word 'problematic' turned to 'reactionary'.
i do think like, as an artist you do have some responsibility to grapple with the historical context of your work and the traditions you're drawing on--to bare minimum just be aware of the foundations you are working on. but i think like, the responsibilities of making art are very low-valence because unless you are part of an organized movement producing propaganda, making art is ultimately a very low impact activity
the problem w/ growing my hair out is that its now reached the point of having gained enough volume & mass to be tuoylike; yet is not long enough for me to tie up into buns or tails, forcing me to sweat to death in the ph heat
