Stratt was not born cold. She was born bursting with life and laughter, finding joy in every part of living. She smiled when she heard the birds chirp every morning, and the sun shone in through the window. She smiled when she heard people laughing outside, or children playing on the streets. She grew up falling in love with every part of earth.

Grace was not born kind. He was born brimming with anger. He would frown when somebody insulted his intelligence, biting back sarcastic remarks. He frowned when teachers dismissed him, when his parents found time for others, but not him. He grew up resenting the people around him.

Stratt learned to be cold. With every fraction of the sun that dimmed, the part of her that shone and the smiles that once came so easy for her, dimmed with it. She learned how to shoulder responsibility and how to make the difficult calls when no one else would.

Grace learned to be kind. When he saw what his anger had cost him back in a conference room in Denmark, he let his anger and resentment die out. He learned how to be kind when he saw how kind children could be, and how to let that kindness become who he was.

When Stratt realised she had to send Grace, the one who shone for her, on the mission to die, the last lights in her were snuffed out. After years of carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders, she found this to be the hardest decision she had to make. She wouldn't, couldn't change it, not while her love for humanity and earth lived on.

And so she asked Grace to die. And Grace, who was born angry, refused.

Some rambling below (I’m not a writer be nice 🥹)

Eva Stratt a name which holds so much significance. To the PHM crew she is their fearless leader who is willing to do anything and sacrifice anyone if it means she can save earth. Although she is not cruel they can’t help but fear her. Stratt is serious because she has to be she can’t let her emotions get in the way not when she has the weight of world in her shoulders. Despite that her smile lines remind her everyday of she girl she once was.

Full of love and hope. She used to smile constantly until her cheeks would ache. And that’s what she wishes to protect. She can’t be concerned about her own happiness when she knows that unless she does something so many innocent people full of hope as she once was will suffer.

Sometimes her past version is brought out by a strange school teacher. Although they’re the same age he reminds of herself when she was younger so joyful. Grace shines so brightly and she can’t help but absorb some of his light. She feels it when he cracks stupid jokes which do not make her laugh or when they work silently side by side.

Even though the future is bleak there is comfort having a friend? Companion? Lover? Pet? Grace by her side. God knows what the future holds. Well actually she’s pretty sure she’ll be spending a lot of it in prison, but she hopes Grace is in the cell next to hers.
