If we go with the fannon that Susan was just a trendsetter on gallifrey and that's why the Timelords came to call them TARDIS's, I posit she also started the trend of choosing human sounding earth names.

I've got Thoughts about the TARDIS thing... The slightly ambiguous way Susan explains the acronym could be interpreted to mean that she made up "time and relative dimensions in space" from the initials of TARDIS. Meaning the word already existed, she just turned it into an acronym. So I like to think that "tardis" is the Gallifreyan word for "timeship," but Susan thought it would be fun for the translation circuits to still make it sound like the same word in English. So anyone who knows what it stands for hears the acronym "TARDIS" but anyone who doesn't know just hears the translation "timeship."
