Today, I read an article on how to beat procrastination.
I think it was by James Clear. It spoke of something called the 2-Minute Rule.Â
It states that if you have a task in your head, then just calculate if it can be done in under 2 minutes. If yes, then just go ahead and do it. And with bigger tasks, you break them into chunks and then see if the chunk can be done in under 2 minutes.Â
It’s 1:30a.m. and I’m sitting high as a kite with my wife after we decided to call it a night of irresponsible drinking to celebrate being married for 2 weeks now.
We haven’t put the clothes to dry yet. But when I went to dry the clothes based on James Clear’s advice, I realised I couldn’t put the clothes to dry because to do so I’d need to bring the dried clothes down from the line. That is definitely a task that will take more than 2 minutes as it comes with the repercussions of needing to be folded to be placed in the cover.Â
What I learnt from this is that perhaps sometimes we just don’t do the tasks that we know we have to do because we’re afraid that they’re just going to bring up more tasks for us to do and we don’t want that headache in our lives either.
Or maybe I’m just sitting here irresponsibly high and forcing myself to type something. Because I figured this would definitely take less than 2 minutes.Â
Maybe I might even bring the clothes down from the line after I’m done writing this. But I probably won’t.
