I also want to point out that not only will spanking your kids harm them, it also DOES NOT WORK as a disciplinary action. Studies have shown that spanking actually increases defiant and anti-social behavior. It teaches children to fear authority and to be secretive around their parents.

The link between action and consequence is so disconnected and disjointed in most cases that instead of children making the connection between their actions and the punishment, they instead make the connection between their parent/s and the punishment and come to fear or resent their parent (or both). They then don’t trust the parent/s and are more likely to ignore their advice in the future (openly or secretively).

Maybe you were hit as a kid and you were “fine” but that’s not what the data shows overall. In the same way many people drive without a seatbelt but are “fine” that doesn’t mean its good idea to drive without one.

So yeah, the long and short of it— pros of hitting your kids: none. Cons: you are hurting someone.
