ok but being in those lessons where there was a class debate about gay and trans rights as a gay/trans kid in high school was so traumatic like wtf... whoever thought it was a good idea to make kids listen to their homophobic and transphobic peers who they have to study and coexist with in the same space for several hours every day for years discuss how they literally want them dead you're ugly you're disgusting i'm gonna kill you give me $200

oh man back in high school (a catholic high school, mind you) our world religions class made two kids debate on whether or not Islam was a religion of violence and nobody else except me and the other Muslims objected to it. It’s awful being forced to argue for your humanity, but sitting in a room full of silent onlookers who see no issue with your dehumanization does something to you. I came out the other end unable to trust nonmuslims to stand up for me.
