Chapter 6: Baby Names & Big Chunky Baby
Tommy was hunched under the open hood of the car he was working on, Skylar sat on the stool next to him swinging her legs back and forth, it was his day off. There was an open tool kit on a small fold up table with tools he labelled with numbers and a few colours, it made the whole experience easier with Sky. Heâd call out a number between one and ten or a colour of the rainbow and she would pass him that tool, it wasnât just an easier way to do things for Tommy but a learning opportunity for his little girl too.
âCan I have blue, please?â Tommy asked, he held his hand out with his head still under the hood.
Skylar hummed, looking over the tools until her face lit up when she found the blue sticker on a wrench, âThis one, papa!â
âThank you, sweetpea.â Tommy glanced at her quickly, smiling and taking the tool from her.
For the next twenty minutes it was more of the same, calling out colours and numbers until Sky got distracted by a new presence in the room. âDaddy!â She shrieked and waved him over, her curls bouncing.
Buck had been at home all day too, complaining of back pain, heâd been resting in bed watching whatever documentary he was interested in that week on the tv in their room. He was due any day.
He stood next to the car, his hands against his lower back with a pained look on his face. He rarely came into the garage that pregnant so Tommy stopped what he was doing right away and straightened up, grabbing the rag in his pocket to clean his hands.
âI think Iâm in labour.â He sounded out of breath, one hand moved to run along the underside of his dropped belly.
Tommy shut the hood quickly, careful not to trap any fingers in it, âAre you sure?â
Buck scrunched up his nose and groaned, âYeah, that was definitely a contraction.â
Tommy scooped Sky off the stool and gestured for Buck to turn around, placing a hand on his back to guide him back up the couple of steps into the house. As Tommy hiked Sky up from slipping on his hip slightly and closed the door behind him, Buck pressed his hand against the wall, putting his weight on it as he groaned again. Then there was a sudden dripping sound.
âWater broke.â He mumbled, still recollecting himself.
âWhat?â Tommy walked around him, not fully hearing what he said.
âMy water broke.â Buck casually said while he started some breathing exercises. Heâd been through this once, he could do it again, so he remained calm. Tommy on the other hand, mister chill himself, was not so mister chill in that very moment.
âOh my, okay, um,â he started to panic a little, floundering around as he looked at the growing wet patch on his husbandâs sweatpants, âIâll call Maddie, we can drop Sky off with her on the way to the hospital.â He ran to grab his keys and ran back, Skylar blissfully ignorant to the situation, laughing at her papa running around and, in her eyes, being silly.
Buck just slowly made his way to the front door and slid on his crocs, leaning against the wall again, waiting for Tommy.
He reappeared with their to-go bags, one for Buck and baby and one for Sky. âIs that everything? Do I have everything?â He looked around frantically, âAre you hungry? Do you need food before we get there or a drink? Or a change of clothes?â He was almost out of breath from running around the house with a heavy three year old clinging to him in his arms.
âTommy, for the love of everything that is holy, you need to chill,â Buck reached out and grabbed either side of the pilots face, âIâm chill, itâs not like we havenât done this before, just- oh wait a minute,â and just then a contraction hit, he squished Tommyâs cheeks making his lips purse and groaned low, closing his eyes tight in pain, âokay, wow, that was a big one.â
Tommy watched with big, concerned eyes, âOkay, chill, I can do that, weâve done this before,â he jostled Skylar, her giggles not subsiding any time soon, âhavenât we, sweetpea?â
âYeah!â Skylar threw her arms up, having no clue what she was replying to, she just loved to feel included.
âTime to go, babe.â Buck had stated and opened the door.
âSo no change of clothes?â Tommy hadnât moved from his spot in the hallway.
Buck huffed, âNo, I donât think anyone will judge the heavily pregnant man in labour, we really need to go!â
They all clambered into the car and Tommy tried his best not to speed. Dropping their daughter off as her aunt and uncles, they left them with a few wishes of good luck and promises to see them tomorrow as they made their way to the hospital.
After getting checked in and given a room to get comfortable in, Buck donned a hospital gown and fuzzy socks while he walked circles around the room. He seemed to be stuck at eight centimetres dilated, so he chose to walk around to further the process while Tommy sat scrolling on his phone reading out baby names from the list they created, ones they narrowed down to.
âEthan?â
âNo, I donât like that one anymore.â Buck grumbled and scrunched his nose.
âOkay,â Tommy put a line through it on his notes app, âJames?â
âNo.â Buck shook his head, stopping for a second and grabbing his husbandâs waiting hand to get through a contraction before continuing his lap around the chair he was sitting in.
âKaden?â He liked that one, but Buck didnât anymore.
They went on like that for the next hour, halfway Buck got dizzy and decided heâd done enough walking, choosing to lay back down instead. Tommy rattled off baby name after baby name until they were left with just two.
Before they could decide, a nurse came in to check dilation and confirmed it was go time. Buck was sweating big time, he knew he looked gross, but with Tommy unphased and ready to hold his hand through it all no matter what, Buck didnât really care what he looked like.
He thought since heâd been through childbirth before this time would be easy, however, their son was bigger than Sky, much bigger. Each push felt like a battle against his body, tearing him in half. He gripped Tommyâs hand with all his strength, uncaring if he was hurting him, Tommy would brush it off anyway. He bore down and pushed with everything he had in him. With gritted teeth, he was determined to make sure his son made it into this world.
It felt like hours had passed, sweat dripped down the side of his face and his whole body trembled and then he heard those magical words, âJust one more big push and baby boy will be in your arms.â The midwife said.
And she was right, just one more push and he heard the best sound heâd heard all day. That cry. That first cry. It was beautiful.
He was lifted to his chest after Tommy had graciously cut the cord, their baby boy lay wiggling, covered in birth gunk but still beautiful. The midwife made quick work of the afterbirth and the slight stitch up job. He was certainly big, probably one of the biggest, chuckiest looking newborns they had ever seen. He had the cutest, squishiest looking cheeks that any grandma would love to pinch. Weighing in at ten point eight pounds, Buck had thought eight pounds was heavy when he had Sky, but it also was no surprise the two men would make big babies.
âDaniel.â Buck whispered.
Tommy hummed and looked up from where his eyes were trained on their son, his hand on top of Buckâs own on the little boyâs back.
Daniel wasnât on the list.
Buck was too scared to suggest it, he felt like it was wrong, he felt like it was disrespectful. But laying there with his baby breathing against his own breaths, his heart beating against his own heart, all the guilt and worry melted away. He gave life to this little boy.
âDaniel Thomas Buckley-Kinard,â he looked away from him and gazed tearfully at Tommy, âthatâs his name.â He choked on the last few words, kissing his sonâs head. Tommy wrapped his arm around his shoulder, sitting on the edge of the bed the best he could and leant in close, kissing Buckâs damp curls with tears in his own eyes.
Buck melted into his embrace, âItâs perfect.â Tommy couldnât agree more, he felt honoured to share his name with his son, he wasnât gloating but he also didnât want to ask Buck if he was sure, he knew it meant a lot to Buck. And he knew his first name meant even more to him.
Tommy kissed him again, he had the most considerate, caring husband and he gifted him with the two greatest treasures to look after for the rest of his life. He never saw himself having this with anyone else, the first time he even thought about it was when he admitted he had fallen in love with the man. And now here he was. Married, in love, a father of two, happy.
Life after didnât change much for them, Daniel fit into it all like a missing puzzle piece. He was such a happy baby, everyone was smitten with him, especially his big sister. Skylar loved him, maybe the most.
His chunkiness only grew, and to the two dads it was the most adorable thing in the world. They had a happy healthy baby, what more could they want.
âHeâll lose some of this fat when he learns to run, same thing happened to me.â Tommy said, squishing Danâs sleepy face gently between his thumb and pointer, he couldnât help it.
âIs it bad that I want him to stay like this?â Buck giggled watching the pilotâs actions.
Tommy huffed a laugh, âI think almost every parent thinks like that, Evan.â
âI remember thinking something similar with Sky, I liked when I could strap her in the carrier against my chest and just carry her around everywhere, she was so little.â Bucked hummed in nostalgia, propping his chin on Tommyâs shoulder.
The domesticity had somehow grown tenfold in their house. They created a home that was safe, full of love and care, a home they had both yearned for growing up. They created a home theyâve always wanted. Their kids would never feel the chill of loneliness, the neglect, the lack of love, that they both experienced growing up. And they were proud of that. Proud to be the parents they never had.
âWeâve done good.â Buck murmured into the fabric of Tommyâs shirt.
âYeah, weâve done good.â Tommy agreed his voice low as Daniel dozed off in his arms, he twisted his head and softly smiled at Buck.

Chapter 5: Body Pillow Jealousy
Tommy was the one who bought Buck the damn pillow and now heâs mad at his past self for thinking like a good husband. He stood in the bedroom, staring at it like it owed him money, and it did owe him something, cuddles with his very pregnant husband.Â
Buck slept with it up against him every single night, heâd stuff it between his thighs and below his belly, gripping the top in his arms like it was the love of his life. And that made Tommy unbelievably jealous. He wasnât usually a jealous man, but something about not being able to support his husbandâs comfort like he did when he was pregnant with their daughter just rubbed him up the wrong way.Â
Too many nights had he been pushed away for the soft body pillow for it to stay another.
He had to do something about it, he had to get rid of that wretched thing.Â
The day had come, Buck took Skylar to the aquarium and met up with Maddie and the kids for the afternoon, it was the perfect distraction.Â
He grabbed it off the sheets and looked around the room. Under the bed? No, too easy to find, plus there wasnât much room under there anyway. In the blanket box at the end of the bed? Too many blankets in there to fit an extra large body pillow too. In the closet? Now thatâs just silly.Â
Dragging it through the house, he looked for more hiding spots and none of them were good, they all were just too obvious for Buck not to notice immediately. Pregnancy brain be damned, Buck still had it together.Â
Then it hit him, like a light bulb lighting up above his head. The garage. Tommyâs more-or-less mechanic studio. Buck only went in there when he really needed to and with how big his bump is, he tried to avoid the trip hazard room the best he could.Â
Tommy opened the side door to the garage and flipped on the light. There was a shelving unit stacked with labelled boxes, a car lift in the middle, a mechanic station and the car he was currently working on with the help, if you could call it help, from Sky.Â
As much as he hated the body pillow, Buck loved it, he couldnât bear upsetting his husband by getting it dirty, so the shelves were a no. That left limited options for him. Circling the garage multiple times, clutching the soft pillow to his chest, he searched. He needed somewhere clean, not damp and big enough to fit it.Â
He stopped in his tracks and slowly turned around. The car. It was the perfect hiding spot.
Opening the door, he shoved the pillow on the back seats. It will be safe there. He shut the door and turned to leave, giving it one more glance before switching off the light and heading back into the house.Â
Now, Tommy just had to wait for night to come and Buck will forget all about the damn pillow and use him as his own personal living body pillow. He smiled to himself at the image in his head, he couldnât wait.Â
âWhereâs my pillow?â Buck stood with his hands on his lower back, belly popping out, clad in his pyjamas.Â
Tommy looked up at him from where he lay reading his book on the bed, reading glasses perched on the bridge of his nose. He looked at him in fake confusion, âI donât know.âÂ
âYes you do, Tommy, youâve had an issue with it for weeks.â Buck sighed, waddling over to look in the closet.Â
âI donât know what youâre talking about.â He tried to act innocent under his husbandâs unimpressed gaze.Â
Buck rolled his eyes and waddled back to the end of the bed, he placed a hand under his heavy stomach and reached down to open the blanket box, he groaned when he saw it wasnât in there either, âCome on, Tommy! Nowâs not the time to act all jealous over a stupid pillow. My back is killing me, your son weighs a ton!â The annoyance was clear in his voice, the weight he was feeling made him easily irritable.Â
Tommy put his book down and took off his glasses, inching to the end of the bed to reach out for Buck, âIs it too much to ask for you to just cuddle me like you did last time? I kinda feel replaced by a pillow.â He laughed a little, but Buck didnât, he just glared at him. And like always, Tommy crumbled under it, âFine, I put it in the garage, let me go get it for you.âÂ
Buck rolled his eyes again and huffed, moving away to get in bed.Â
None of what happened had gone to plan, the plan Tommy made up in his head because he felt replaced by a goddamn pillow. He grabbed it as quickly as possible, not wanting to anger Buck more and risk having to sleep elsewhere.Â
âHere.â Tommy threw it on the bed and turned to use the bathroom. He needed to cool off from the growing anger he was suddenly feeling. He was upset.Â
After splashing his face with water, he turned out all the lights and laid next to Buck. His back was facing him, which was unusual, usually he faced Tommy as he slept, said he felt better that way. So when he wakes up, Tommy is the first thing he sees in the morning.Â
He stared at the expanse of his back, the old baggy tee draped off his sides and laid out on the bed below. The curls on his head splayed on the pillow under his head, beautiful and soft, he wanted to run his hands through them.Â
âI can feel you staring.â Buck mumbled, clearly tired.Â
âSorry.âÂ
âGod, what has gotten into you?â Sighing loudly, Buck inched back ever so slightly, âJust get your jealous ass over here and spoon me, you big idiot.â To a stranger it would have sounded mean, but to Tommy, he could hear the endearing tone buried deep in there. Buck wasn't mad at him and he knew that.Â
âIâm sorry for hiding your pillow, baby, I really am.â Tommy kissed Buckâs shoulder and snuggled close, bringing his arms around him and cupping his bump.Â
âI know you are, now shut up and go to sleep.â And Tommy did just that. He knew never to mess with the body pillow again, he only got a taste of Buckâs rage and he was absolutely terrified to feel the full force of it.Â
No more messing with his pregnant husband for him.

Chapter 4: Thanksgiving Dinner
âWe all ready to go?â Tommy stood at the front door, bags of food in hand and Skylarâs bag slung over his shoulder.
Crouched on the floor, Buck zipped up Sky's coat and pulled her into his arms, resting her on his hip as he stood up. He looked around for the pile of envelopes he'd be giving everyone to open at dinner.
âYeah, I think that's everything.â Buck slid the envelopes into one of the bags Tommy was carrying and moved past him to open the door. He held it open for his husband and locked it once he was through.
The short drive was filled with out of tune singing to Skylar's favourite movie soundtracks, it was something they all enjoyed as a family, something to distract from the nerves of the dinner.
As they walked into the station, they were hit with the smell of Thanksgiving. Warm baked goods, delicious butter roasted veg and two sizable turkeys. Buckâs mouth was watering like crazy, ready to dig in right away. After the initial morning sickness, this pregnancy had made Buck extra hungry, especially for anything carb related.
âButtercup!â Making it to the top of the stairs, Sky ran straight into Bobbyâs waiting arms, âHow's my favourite sous chef?â
Skylar gave him a rosy smile, one that looked a lot like Buck's own, âI've been a good girl, Grampa!â
âOh, have you now?â He laughed and kissed her cheek, greeting her fathers and telling them to sit, âFoods just about ready.â
Bobby walked back to the kitchen area with Sky on his hip, doing a few finishing touches while everyone found their seats. The tables were pushed together and multiple tablecloths laid across them, cutlery was placed out and a few salad bowls and bread baskets sat in the middle of each. Everything had come together nicely.
Buck pulled out his chair next to Tommyâs and sat heavily, rearranging his sweater over his small bump hoping no one noticed as it rode up slightly. He was eyeing up the bread in front of him big time. Next to him, Ravi took a seat, âHey, Buck, how's PTO been?â He said, distracting Buck from reaching over and tearing into the bread loaf like a maniac.
He smiled warmly, always happy to have a conversation with Ravi, âIt's been good, spending time with Sky has to easily be my favourite thing in the world.â In that moment Bobby brought little Sky over and sat her in Buckâs lap.
âI can definitely see why!â Ravi tickled her side, making her giggle and swat at her uncle Raviâs hand.
Conversation flowed and the rest of the food was set out, the remaining people had made their way to their seats and readied to fill their plates. Tommy had moved over a seat so Skylar could sit between her dads, the chair was stacked with pillows giving her the extra boost she needed.
Before everyone began, Buck took the envelopes out of the bag under his chair, âBefore we start digging into this delicious feast,â he looked over at Bobby and smiled, giving him unspoken credit, âwe,â he gestured to himself, Skylar and Tommy, âhave something for you all, so Iâm going to pass around these envelopes and when everyone has one you can open it.â
Everyone began to whisper and excitement started to grow as they were passed around the table. Maddie looked at her brother, an eyebrow arched as she mouthed, âA surprise?â Buck just shrugged nonchalantly in response.
âEveryone got one?â Tommy asked as he looked around to check. Every person sat at the table had one in hand, looking at the plain white paper like they were looking for clues. âOkay, you can open it now.â
They all rushed to get answers, ripping open the envelopes to find a picture with a date on it. It was black and white and fuzzy and kind of looked like a⊠baby. The room filled with silence, shock settling in.
And then it hit, âYOUâRE PREGNANT!â Maddie jumped up from her seat opposite Buck and ran around the table to hug him. The room erupted in congratulatory cheers, bringing tears to Buckâs eyes. His family was getting a new member and they couldnât be happier, he couldnât be happier.
Bobby patted Tommyâs back before pulling Buck in for a hug, âIâm so proud of you, kid.â
He hugged his pseudo father tighter, burying his face in his shoulder, âThank you.â He pulled away and waved his hands around, âAnyway, letâs dig in before it gets cold!â He demanded, causing a chorus of laughter around the loft.
âHappy Thanksgiving.â Tommy happily cheered and raised his glass.

Chapter 3: FREE SPACE (Big Sister!)
It had been a few weeks since they found out, wanting to leave it until they were safe to tell people, until they were sure it stuck.
The time had come and they knew who they wanted to tell first. Skylar, their beautiful daughter. She was going to be a big sister, it was only right that the three year old be in the know first.
âHow does one tell a three year old that there's a baby in daddy's tummy?â Buck asked Tommy one night while they were laying, cuddled in bed.
One of Tommyâs hands rested on Buckâs very tiny bump, stroking it in circles.
âExactly like that.â Tommy murmured into Buckâs curls.
He laughed, pulling away to look at his comedic husband, âYou're not very helpful.â
âWell, Iâm not wrong.â Tommy yawned. Just getting off a 24 hour shift, he was ready to sleep till midday, and Buck would let him.
Buck rubbed Tommyâs arm and kissed his forehead, âWeâll talk about it more tomorrow, get some sleep.â He watched as his husband accepted slumber straight away, if thereâs one thing Tommy has gotten really good at over the years, itâs falling asleep instantly. A trait that was fortunately passed down to their daughter.
He pulled Tommy close and ran his fingers through his hair and thought about Skylar in the other room. She was going to be so excited by the news, she treated her dolls and teddy bears so kindly, there was no doubt in the two dads minds that she would be a great big sister.
As the light shone through the kitchen window the morning after, Sky kicked her feet, swinging them back and forth while she sat on the chair pulled up to the island, enjoying her stack of homemade pancakes. Tommy shuffled in, hair a mess, making his way to Buck leaning against the countertop, a mug of tea clasped in his hands.
âMorning.â Buck smiled softly, placing his mug down and passing his half awake husband a cup of warm coffee.
âMmm, âning.â He gladly took the mug and kissed him, humming against his lips. He then walked around the island and kissed the top of his girlâs head, âMorning to you too, princess.â
âGood morning, Papa!â Her smile wide, showing off a toothy grin.
He took the seat next to her, stealing a piece of pancake off her plate making her giggle and pout. Buck sipped his tea and watched the scene unfold, the two loves of his life chatting away, filling the kitchen with laughter and thinking how in a year's time itâll be different. Not in a bad way, thereâll just be more laughter, more kisses, more love.
His hand drifted to caress his abdomen, he was just barely over two months, the bump looked like a little bit of bloating, but it was there. Ever since having Sky, heâd had trouble losing the belly fat, he was still fit and in shape, just softer, so it was no surprise the bump was coming out earlier. Especially it being the second pregnancy.
He cleared his throat to get Tommyâs attention and he whipped his head around instantly.
âIâm impatient, letâs tell her now.â Buck was just too excited, he wanted his daughter to be excited too.
Tommy looked back at Sky, who had gone back to her food, picking off blueberries and eating them one by one, then looked back at Buck, âOkay, fine by me.â He shrugged.
Buck downed the last of his lukewarm tea and placed the mug in the sink to wash up later. He stepped in front of Skylar on the other side of the island and took a deep breath. He looked nervous and Tommy could tell, giving him an encouraging smile, he stroked Skyâs curls and said, âSky, Daddy and I have something really important to tell you, okay?â
She looked at him with curious eyes and a serious expression, or as serious as a three year old could muster, âOkay, Papa.â
Her stare turned on her daddy, making him straighten up before releasing a sigh and leaning on the marble surface of the island. Looking into his girlâs eyes calmed him, there was no need to be scared or nervous.
âYou know how I told you aunt Maddie is my big sister, and how I look up to her and how she took care of me growing up,â Skylar nodded at Buckâs words, âand you know Jee is the same, she is Bobbyâs big sister and she looks out for him?â She nodded again, her face a pure look of innocence.
âWell, how would you feel if we said you are going to be like that? A big sister.â Buck raised his eyebrows in wait as she looked like she was thinking over the information given to her.
âI get a baby brother?â She asked, brow furrowed.
âYeah, or sister.â Tommy replied in confirmation to her slight confusion.
âWhere?â She cocked her head and looked back at Buck.
The two men stifled their laughter, she was just too cute.
âTheyâre in daddyâs tummy, safe and sound.â Her eyes grew wide in a way Buck was hoping wasnât fear, âTheyâre in here growing, and when they are ready, theyâll come out and meet us.â Hearing his own words spoken out loud made him cringe slightly, he could only imagine what mustâve been going through the three year oldâs mind.
Her gaze flicked between her parents, the unsure look still plastered on her face, âA baby?â
Tommy laughed through his nose and smirked, trying to hold his composure. Buck gave him an unimpressed look, so much for the help of his dear husband.
âYes, a baby.â Buck said softly, he prayed that she finally understood in some way, otherwise it would have been a really long morning for them in the Buckley-Kinard household.
And just like that, her smile slowly grew and it grew wide, then came the shriek of excitement and pure glee. She stood on the chair which made Tommyâs dad instincts kick in, putting out his arms so she wouldn't fall and hurt herself.
âA BABY!â
Buck couldnât help the sudden spring of tears, he was just so damn happy that his baby girl was happy. He knew that from then on he wouldnât have to fear her feeling lonely, she would have someone to protect and be protected by. Of course they would fight, all siblings do, but at the end of it theyâll always have each otherâs backs, like him and Maddie. Forever and always.
He hadnât realised that she had clambered off the chair and made her way around to him. She wrapped her arms as best she could around his legs and stepped on her tippy toes to place the softest, most gentle kiss to his stomach.
And the tears just kept flowing. And hearing a sniffle from the other side of the kitchen signified he wasnât the only glassy eyed dork in there.
âYouâre the sweetest girl in the whole wide world.â Buck whispered to her and she looked up at him with adoration.

Chapter 2: Fertility Challenges (Trying)
Rated: M
Buck and Tommyâs sex life had always been adventurous. Sure it settled down a bit after having their daughter, but nonetheless, it was something. So trying for a baby seemed fun to them.
In the first couple months, they planned date nights. Handing Skylar off to Maddie with the excuse of wanting to rekindle the romance in their marriage, unbeknownst to her, their marriage was thriving, they just wanted to keep their plans private for the time being to save themselves from the pressure of others knowing.
They would go out for dinner or go see a movie and then crash through the front door at the end of the night all over each other. Sometimes they would cancel their plans all together, skipping date night and jumping right to sex.
Buck would pin Tommy to the mattress and have his way with him. Not that Tommy was complaining, no, he loved watching his hot husband bounce and rock like he was a cowboy in the midst of a rodeo. Sweat cascading down his chest, dripping over the soft rolls of his tummy. It took everything in him not to flip them over and lick every inch of him.
It was heaven, sweet blissful heaven.
After a month, the first negative pregnancy test came, but it didnât bother them too much as they just started trying. And then the month after that, another negative. That one had a bit of a sting, Buck was so sure as he'd been feeling under the weather, it turned out he just had a stomach bug he caught off of Skylar.
A few knock backs didnât stop them though, another month of âdate nightsâ would do the trick, or so they thought. The third test had Buck thinking they were doing something wrong.
âI donât understand, I came off birth control months ago, so it should be out of my system by now.â Buck sat in their bathroom on the closed lid of the toilet, staring down at the test in his hands.
Tommy brushed a hand through Buckâs curls, âMaybe itâs just taking a bit longer than usual, everyoneâs bodies are different.â He reassured, "There's no rush, baby.â
His husband's words settled his nerves, there was no rush, no deadline, they could slow down a bit. But part of him didnât want to.
The nights out together slowed, the excitement of what they meant dwindled. They didnât need to wine and dine to romance each other when they would just do all that at home anyways. Plus evenings with their baby, Sky were the best reminders of what they already have, a home filled with love.
One evening, standing over a sleeping Skylar, Tommy felt arms wrap around his waist and a chin rest on his shoulder. He and Buck watched as Skyâs breathing evened out, signalling that deep sleep had finally settled in.
Walking out the room quietly, hand in hand, Buck pulled Tommy to the living room to sit on the couch.
âDo you think we're doing the right thing, trying to give her a sibling?â Buck whispered, scared to ask it any louder.
âOf course, why do you ask? Are you having second thoughts?â He whispered back, not wanting to burst the delicate bubble he felt around Buck.
He shook his head, âNo, itâs just,â Buck sighed, âit feels like itâs the universe telling us we donât need another kid, like Iâm being selfish wanting another one.â
âNonsense!â Tommy's voice shattered the bubble into a million pieces, âThree negatives does not mean we should just give up, I know it hurts, trust me, I know.â He grabbed Buckâs hands and gave them a squeeze, âBut fuck the universe, it doesnât know you like I know you, you are a fan-fucking-tastic dad and thereâs no way in hell that you wanting to give our daughter a brother or sister, to be her friend for life, is seen as selfish. In absolutely no way, shape or form!â
Tears spiked in Buckâs eyes, taking a hand back to swipe across his nose, âSorry.â He murmured, letting out a quiet sob.
Wiping a tear off Buckâs cheek, Tommy kissed his forehead, âDonât be sorry, thereâs nothing to be sorry for.â Pulling back, he looked him in the eye and kissed his husbandâs lips gently.
Buck nodded, his throat too clogged with emotion to speak.
âIâll fight the universe for you, just so you know,â Buck laughed wetly at his ridiculous words, âIâm being serious, Iâll fight anyone and anything for you.â
For the rest of that night they held each other close, just laying in the warmth of their love, under the covers of their bed. The journey ahead seemed rocky, but having each other to lean on was that light spark in the dark that they needed to push through.
From then on, they went on as usual. Not trying but not preventing a baby seemed to be the easiest way to view it in their eyes.
Days turned into weeks. Their sex life seemed to simmer down and their schedules booked up. There was no time to fret over what was playing in the back of their minds when they had work to do and birthday parties to attend.
After spending the morning in the park with the moms and dads of Skylar's friends and a gaggle of hyperactive toddlers, Buck took Skylar over to Maddie's for some late lunch.
When he appeared on her doorstep, sleepy Sky in his arms, Maddie told him it was lucky she was having quiet time with Jee and little Bobby. Sky sat slumped against her big cousin Jee and watched her colour, too worn out from her morning of fun to pick up a pencil for herself.
âShe's too cute.â Maddie coos, watching the girls from the dining table, a mug of coffee in her hands.
Buck turned in his seat to see as Skylar fell forward slightly, jolting herself awake and leaning back on the older girl, âShe's fighting that sleep so hard.â He giggled.
âShe doesn't want to miss anything.â Maddie smiled, remembering how Buck used to be the exact same.
Jee looked around, seeing the pencil she wanted just out of reach, she gazed down at Sky trying to work out how to get it when Bobby grabbed it and passed it to her, âHere you go.â He said, like it was just another normal task for him, going back to his own paper.
It pulled at Buck's heartstrings, making the mellow he felt over the recent months come flooding in all of a sudden. Bobby really loved his older sister, just like he does, and hopefully one day like Skylar's younger sibling. If they ever get there.
âHave you and Tommy thought about having another?â Maddie asked innocently.
Buck felt like his yearning had been caught, he smiled softly and picked up his coffee mug, warming his hands, âWe've spoken about it.â
Maddie raised an eyebrow, knowing her brother too well for her own good, âJust spoke about it, orâŠâ she wiggled her eyebrows, âyaâknow, got practical about it.â
He blushed furiously, leaning over the table as far as he could in his chair, âI don't really wanna discuss my sex life with my sister!â He yelled in a whisper.
Maddie failed to suppress a laugh, âNever stopped you before, what's different now?â She smirked.
Returning a smile, he leaned back and simply said, âI'm married with a kid, I grew up,â sipping his coffee, he added, âplus, I think Tommy would be very embarrassed to find out my sister knows how amazingly good he is in bed.â
Maddie groaned, pulling a face, throwing them into a fit of laughter.
The conversation ended when Buck felt small hands touch his side and a tiny voice asked for a cuddle, he kissed his babyâs head and let her fall asleep against his chest.
He didnât discuss it any further with his sister, not wanting the pitying looks he knew would be cast his way in her presence if she heard his and Tommyâs current struggles. She wouldnât mean it, but it would still hurt a little coming from her.
Months went by and Buckâs determination grew again, so they had tried all the mom blog techniques. Waiting for the fertile window in Buckâs cycle to be wide open, or lifting his hips after sex, Tommy would sit in front of him so he could drape his long legs over his back to keep them upright, or even went as far as changing his diet.
But nothing seemed to work.
âJust, just stay there.â Buck panted in Tommyâs ear, his legs locked around the older manâs waist, âDonât move.â
âGoing back to the classic leg lock?â Tommy murmured against Buckâs collarbone, leaving a kiss there after.
Buck shrugged, âWeâve run out of new things to do.â
âNow that canât be true.â Tommy snorted, rewarding him with a light smack on his shoulder.
Just over a week later, still nothing.
With a negative test in hand, Buck shuffled over to Tommy in the kitchen and pressed his face between the bigger manâs shoulder blades. He reached around and gave him the test in silence.
Buck was lost on what to do next and the tears fell out of frustration. He wiped them away quickly when he heard the little running footsteps of Sky. âDaddy!â She shouted, speeding in with her arms in the air.
He swooped her up in his arms and hugged her close, âOh, my baby.â He kissed all over her face, listening to her shrieking giggles.
She drew back and looked in his eyes, she frowned cutely and cocked her head, looking just like Tommy in that moment, âWhy sad?â
He was taken aback, he tried to hide it all away from her, not wanting his sadness to spread to her but she was too empathetic for her own good. A trait she inherited from himself. âIâm not sad, little birdie, Iâve got you!â His tone lightened, erasing the pain of his bodyâs failure to focus on her. His lighthouse.
With Skylarâs birthday so close, he had to push everything down again. He wanted her third birthday party to be perfect, no distractions.
âHow about we take a break from sex?â Tommy asked him as they laid in bed, combing his fingers through Buckâs hair.
âHave I lost my touch?â He jokingly replied, knowing the real reason Tommy asked.
âI just donât want you to feel the incessant pressure and stress, and just take a breather from it all,â Tommy pulled him closer, âIâm pretty sure over the last year weâve had more sex than we have our entire marriage, and to be honest, itâs actually quite impressive.â
Buck huffed a laugh, because like always, Tommy was right. Over the years of being by his side, his husband had been his rock, someone who understood him better than anyone else. No matter how silly, stupid or dumb Buck felt about something, Tommy never belittled him, never insulted him or made him feel like he was being silly. That is what love is.
Love is understanding.
Love is gentle.
âOkay,â Buck rubbed a hand across the pilotâs chest, âand I want to book a doctors appointment.â
Tommy kissed his forehead, âWe can do that.â
They booked the appointment for after Skyâs birthday. She was their sole focus and they made sure she knew that. Her party was filled with family, friends, food and a mountain of presents. She was spoiled rotten by everyone. Buckâs phone gallery was filled with pictures of her holding her new toys excitedly, face covered in cake frosting courtesy of Hen, and her running around with the older kids.
He couldnât have asked for a better day before his appointment. It was in the furthest point of his mind, too distracted by the mayhem in their house to find time to dwell on it too much.
And when the day came, the doctor had run some tests and sat them down in the chairs in front of her, she smiled. Papers in hand, she leant back, relaxed in her seat, âWell, Mr Buckley-Kinard, you seem to be one hundred percent healthy.â
The information stunned him, he gripped Tommyâs hand for dear life, âThen why canât I get pregnant again?â The question fell from his mouth instantly.
The doctor put the papers down and picked up a leaflet, handing it to Buck, but he didnât take it. He knew it was full of everything he had already read, countless hours sat in front of his laptop screen, getting headache after headache just to figure out what was wrong, what he could be doing better. So Tommy took it, even though he knew it all too.
âMy guess, it could be stress related, sometimes it doesnât take due to high stress hormones, but also sometimes it just doesnât take and takes a while.â Her smile dropped to something softer, âI believe you will conceive naturally when your body believes itâs the right time, but for now, I can prescribe some vitamins that might give you that extra boost in hormones.â
With his new vitamins and their new sense of hope, they went to sleep that night feeling lighter than they had in the past year. Still agreeing to their bedroom activities being on the back burner, they wanted time for the vitamins to kick in and for any stress to dissipate, all they needed was time.
âAre you excited for a fun girls night with auntie May?â Buck turned in the passenger side of the car, looking into the back to see the excitement on Skylarâs face.
âYeah!â She shouted, wiggling in her car seat.
Tommy looked at her in the rearview mirror, smiling at his girl's glee. Tonight, they had plans to go out for a few drinks with the 118, Ravi had suggested it, saying they donât have fun anymore and itâs been a while. So, with their 72 hours off over a weekend, they thought it couldnât have been a better time to do it.
âI think grandma Athena is there too.â Buck added.
âYes!â Her cheers of joy grew louder. She loved Athena, always has. Tommy thinks itâs because Athena spoils her, but who doesnât in their extended family?
When they arrived, Sky couldnât wait to get out and run to the house. As she made her way up the path, the door swung open and May caught her in her arms, squeezing her in a tight hug.
âThere she is!â May bounced the little girl on her hip, eliciting giggles from her.
The two men werenât far behind, Tommy carried her bag while Buckâs hands were full of grocery bags filled with baking ingredients, a promise he made to May to bring as payment for having Sky overnight.
âCome in, come in,â she moved aside, putting Sky on the ground so she could toddle into the house herself, âRavi wonât be long.â Buck still couldnât believe his pseudo step sister married Ravi, one of his bestest friends.
âGamma âthena!â All three of them heard Skylarâs joyful scream from the other room.
Saying their hellos and getting their hugs, they sat around and waited till it was time to go. Buck was excited himself, in a very different way to his daughter, but excited nonetheless. It had been a while since he let loose, and an even longer time since he last went out with Ravi, he recalls getting a bit too drunk a few of the times and one time in particular being the reason he and Tommy even got back together.
He had a lot to thank the younger man for, he was like a good luck charm at times and he appreciated how kind and understanding he has been to him over the years. He truly found a friend for life in the ex-probie he used to traumatise.
âYou guys ready? The car should be here soon.â Ravi entered the room, shrugging his jacket on and marching over to plant a kiss on Mayâs cheek. Buck and Tommy had agreed to leave their truck there and pick it up the morning after when they got Sky, so they could both drink, and after the year theyâve had, they thought they deserved to get a little wasted.
At the bar, Chim bought them all a round of drinks to start and the conversation flowed. Glasses were downed, bodies swayed and shots were thrown back with grimaced faces. They were having a great time.
Buck had lost count of how many drinks he had drunk, lost somewhere between six and ten. He had tripped on his way over to Ravi at the bar, stumbling into him and sending them both into a fit of drunk laughter. He pushed his back up against the counter and perched his elbows on it leaning back, gaze trained on Tommy twirling Karen around on the dancefloor.
They were all pretty far gone at that point.
He eyed Tommyâs chest, the buttons on his henley undone making a perfect display window for the hair that Buck has spent many nights running his finger through. He wanted to do just that in the middle of the bar.
Thoughts of, god heâs so perfect, were on repeat in Buckâs mind.
âI want him to put a baby in me so bad!â Buck whined, taking the shot Ravi offered to him.
The younger firefighter pulled a face, but couldnât decide if he was grossed out by the statement or thought it was the funniest thing in the world, his brain was too hazy to fully comprehend that particular moment.
He threw back his own shot and said, âDonât let me stop you.â
Raviâs simple words were all it took for Buck to stride over to his husband, grab him, grab a cab and practically barge through the front door of their home.
It had been just about two months since they last got physical in the bedroom, so all that pent up sexual lust came pouring out in an instant. The alcohol running through their veins made their actions clumsy, but ten times more heated.
Buck tugged at Tommyâs henley, âOff, take it off.â He demanded against his lips. While the older man struggled with his shirt, Buck went straight for his belt, pulling at it as they made their way to the couch. They werenât making it to the bedroom.
Nails scraped on bare, sweaty skin and one of Buckâs hands gripped the cushion beneath them as he rocked his hips forward in Tommyâs lap. Moans filled the air, swallowed by hungry kisses. This was different to what they had been doing before, this was unrestrained attraction, raw and beautiful without purpose but for purely pleasure.
âOh, Tommy.â Buck moaned as he threw his head back in ecstasy, Tommyâs mouth found his throat, he sucked at it and left a mark. They were in their own world, riding the high of being consumed by one another.
But after reaching their peak, Buck slumped against Tommy and promptly fell asleep. Tommy followed shortly after, rearranging them and grabbing the blanket draped across the arm of the couch to cover them before closing his eyes and holding his husband close. Thoughts of back pain and showers forgotten for sleep.
It wasnât until a few weeks after that night when Buck first started to feel off.
He was prepping dinner at the station when all of a sudden the smell of raw meat hit him, churning his stomach and draining the colour from his face. He pushed it down, looking at the meat in question. Had it gone bad? But it was in date on the packaging, he checked, he always checked.
âEverything okay? You look a bit pale there, buckaroo.â Hen made him jump, not noticing her approach.
âUh, yeah,â he curled his lip up in disgust at the smell, âdoes this smell off to you?â He pointed the knife in his hand towards the offending food.
Hen walked around the island and leant in close to the cutting board it was laid out on. She frowned and shook her head, âNo, smells fine to me, is it in date?â
He nodded in response, âThen itâs fine, you sure youâre okay?â
âYeah, yeah Iâm fine, probably just being paranoid or something.â She gave him a look that didnât seem like she was convinced by his answer, her suspicion only grew when he cut into the meat and slammed the knife on the side, rushing to the closest bathroom.
The contents of his stomach ended up down the toilet as he wretched into the bowl. Sweat instantly stuck to his brow as he tried to breathe evenly again, and as he was coughing, a soothing hand rubbed up and down his back.
He moved back, shoulders hitting the wall and looked up at Hen.
âYou should go home, Iâll get you a glass of water first.â He didnât say anything, just sat there breathing, trying to think if Skylar had shown any signs of a stomach bug again or if he ate something bad. He didnât want to jump to the other thing, too scared to get his hopes up again.
Hen came back shortly after, glass of water in hand and her phone in the other, âIs Tommy off today?â He nodded, not trusting his voice and took a sip of water, washing the taste of bile down. âIâll call him and ask him to pick you up.â She opened her phone and dialed.
The whole car journey home he was thinking about those negative pregnancy tests, what if this was it? What if the time was finally right? After a year of trying on and off for a baby, was this it?
âWe need to stop at the drug store.â Was all he needed to say to Tommy.
Buck was so nervous after taking the test, he left it on their bathroom counter next to the sink face down. He set the timer on his phone and walked to the kitchen where Tommy was feeding Sky bits of cut up strawberry.
âEverything alright?â Tommy didnât want to push or feel overbearing, he was just as nervous. He handed a strawberry slice to Sky who took it happily, oblivious to the tension surrounding her.
âJust waiting for the timer to go off.â Buck sat down next to their daughter, stroking her hair and tucking it behind her ear.
They waited in silence before the jingle of the alarm sounded from Buckâs phone, he turned it off but didnât move. He looked at Tommy with round eyes, wordlessly communicating that he couldnât do it, he couldnât suffer the heartbreak of thinking they made it when they didnât again. So Tommy got up and made his way to the bathroom.
To Buck, it felt like Tommy was taking forever, which could only mean bad news. As he heard footsteps getting closer, he braced himself. He had made up his mind, this was the last chance, he knew Tommy would understand.
When the pilot came into view, he couldnât read his expression, Tommy was like that sometimes and Buck hated it, especially in that exact moment. Tears had already welled up in Buckâs eyes, he wasnât ready.
âEvan.â He said softly, reaching out a hand to beckon him closer and he took it.
Buck squeezed his eyes shut, Tommyâs fingers brushing his tears away gently.
âEvan, look.â He whispered.
With all the will power and strength he had left, Buck finally opened his eyes and took in what was in front of his face, the test in Tommyâs hand. The test he peed on not that long ago. The test that was positive.
It was positive.
He could finally breathe again.
He almost knocked Tommy over with the sheer force of his hug, wrapping his arms tight and not wanting to let go. They were going to have another baby. Skylar was going to be a big sister. It was all falling into place.
âI feel like I need to thank Ravi.â Confused at his husbandâs words, Tommy pulled Buck back and arched his eyebrow in silent question, âWhenever we go out anywhere with him he seems to bring us closer somehow, I joked in my head that he was our lucky charm.â
And all Tommy could do was laugh, laughing so loud it startled Skylar and in return she gave him an offended glare.
âWe can make him the godfather.â Tommy said, getting that rosy cheeked smile from Buck he always loved.

Chapter 1: Small Family
There were discoloured shapes dotted along the painted living room wall, family photos missing from their places to be laid out on the dining room table. Buck fiddled with the little metal tabs trying his hardest to get the backs off. He just wanted to spend his day off doing housework and ending up staring at the family photo wall for an hour straight trying to figure out what was wrong. He told himself they needed updating.
He finally got the back off of the one he was holding and took out the picture, it was of Tommy, Skylar and himself at the beach taken when they first took Sky. It was such a fond memory, they placed her tiny toes in the sand and she did a full body scrunch, the laughter the two men shared over it still rang clear in his mind.
He couldnât replace this photo, it was too dear, what was he thinking?
Buck quickly placed it back in the correct way up and closed the clasps heâd spent the last ten minutes trying to pry open. He looked around at all the other pictures and dropped his head in his hands groaning.
Shaking his head, recollecting himself, he grabbed his phone to check his baby monitor app. The screen lit up showing his sleeping daughter, not having moved an inch from when he last checked her thirty minutes prior.
There was just this restless feeling under his skin, one that heâs had ever since Skylar turned two a few months back. Sheâs growing so quick, it felt like only yesterday he was laying in a hospital bed with her draped across his chest.
Looking back at the photos again he spotted one of him and Maddie on his wedding day. His big sisterâs smile shone so bright.
He wished Skylar had a sibling.
The thought hit him so hard he straightened his posture and looked around like there was someone there in the glow of the kitchen light that could read his thoughts. Was that what was scratching at his brain every night?
The sound of the front door closing made him jump, wiping away the dazed feeling of his realisation. A soft thud hit the floor and sock covered footsteps approached him.
Tommy rested his hands on Buckâs shoulders, leaning over to kiss the top of his head, âHoney, Iâm home.â He mumbled into his husbandâs curls.
Looking up at him, Buck swivelled slightly in his chair, âHow was your shift?â
He saw Tommyâs eyes scan over the table, his brows furrowing, âIt was good, whatâs all this?â He pulled out the seat next to Buck and sat down slowly.
âWell, it was bothering me all day and I thought they needed an update, but then I couldnât bring myself to change most of the photos,â Buck paused, breathing in, âI know itâs stupid and I should put them back, it just got me thinking and yaâknow.â
Tommy moved to catch Buckâs eyes, âKnow what?â He took Buckâs fidgeting hands in his own steady ones, âWhatever it is, I know it can never be stupid coming from you.â
Buck took his hands back to pick up one of the frames and handed it to the older man, âDo you feel like something is missing?â
His eyes grazed over the picture before him, it was taken a few months ago, they were at the zoo with Skylar and were given the opportunity to feed the giraffes. At the time, one of the zoo keepers was kind enough to take the photo for them.
The pilot scratched his stubbled cheek, deep in thought trying to see what his beloved saw, but he was stumped. In defeat he shrugged his shoulders, âI donât know, babe. Do you think thereâs something missing?â
Buck sighed, taking the frame back, âItâs nothing.â
He stood up and gathered the pictures in his arms to take back into the living room.
A worried expression flooded Tommyâs features, he got up quickly tailing Buck, âHey, no, talk to me, what is it?â
One by one, the pictures were returned to their rightful spots on the wall, âI told you, itâs nothing.â
He hung the last one when he felt hands land on his hips and twist him around, coming face to face with Tommy. His brow was furrowed more deeply than it was in the kitchen and his eyes sharp.
âTell me, Evan, you can tell me anything thatâs bothering you, itâs quite literally my duty as your husband.â His eyebrows raised from their furrowed position and eyes widened in a quiet plea.
Buck avoided his gaze, burying his face in Tommyâs neck and groaned. His arms snaked around his torso, needing to feel as close as humanly possible.
âAre you happy with the size of our little family?â He mumbled into Tommyâs clothed shoulder.
Not quite hearing what he said, he pushed Buck away from him slightly, forcing their eyes to meet again, âAm I happy with our family?â He laughed, âOf course Iâm happy with our family, did something happen to make you think Iâm not?â
Buck, for what felt like the hundredth time that evening, groaned again, âI donât think youâre getting what Iâm saying here, Tommy.â
Confused, Tommy cocked his head like a puppy, âOkay, what am I not getting? Because Iâm starting to feel a little confused with this conversation.â
He managed to draw a giggle out of Buck, he couldnât help it when his big, strong firefighter-pilot husband had his himbo moments. He grabbed either side of his face and felt as Tommyâs hands slid down lower on his hips. God he loved that perfectly sculpted face, he was an adonis, no wonder his daughter is so beautiful when she has a father like Tommy.
He wondered what their next child would look like. He wouldnât even be mad if their kid came out like a mini Tommy again, he was over the moon when Skylar was born and she was his little clone. He sighed dreamily, he couldnât take it anymore, he wanted another child.
âHow would you feel about having just one more baby?â Buck asked, âBecause I know weâre not young but weâre not old either, so two kids would be the perfect number,â he started to ramble, âtwo would mean they always have each other, I really want Skylar to have a sibling and I know we said we would keep our family small, especially because of our jobs-â
âEvan.â Tommy tried to interrupt.
âOur free time is limited as is, but you did say you wanted to limit your hours and you could always take that teaching job that youâve been thinking about and-â
âEvan!â He said a little louder, stopping Buck in his rambling tracks and stunning him into silence, âYes!â
Buckâs smile started to creep up on his face, âYes? As in yes to having another baby?â
Tommy closed the short distance between them and captured Buckâs lips in a soaring kiss, âYes, letâs have another baby.â He said against his lips, slipping his hands under Buckâs ass and lifting him suddenly. Buck yelped in surprise, laughing hard.
âYou wanna start now?â Buck flirtatiously questioned and Tommy started to walk in the direction of their bedroom.
âWhat does it look like Iâm doing?â He lustfully grunted in Buckâs ear before kicking the door open and swiftly closing it behind them.

Hey! Itâs almost the spooky season, and as such, itâs time for the SamBucky Halloween Bingo! From October 1st to November 7th, we will be reblogging and sharing the work you guys create here on our blog.
You can post fanfiction, art, fic rec lists, comments, moodboards, podfics, edits, etc. Itâll be a low-stakes event. No need to sign up. Just remember to tag @sambuckyhalloweenbingo in your post for each fill, and we will be tracking #sbhalloween2025 for reblogs.
If you are posting on AO3, please add it to the SamBucky Halloween Bingo 2025 Collection.
If you'd like the rules and guidelines, feel free to check out the FAQ!
