hi there. I'm very sorry if my question is not appropriate, but it's been something on my mind for a while. with the rise of "cannibalism as a metaphor for love", how do you tell that kind of story with Black characters without leaning in to racist stereotypes OR neglecting the history of Black people being subjected to this treatment?

I mean to say — if it's "love", if the context is appropriate for it ... is that still okay? it makes me personally very uncomfortable but I wanted to ask your/others' thoughts on it

Asking the Black blogging crowd! What are our thoughts on this one?

Me personally, what I get uncomfortable with is seeing white people eating our bodies. That's the bit that I don't care for. Especially when it's treated as a throwaway, something that's a given and even an honor to have done, versus something that is supposed to lean into vulnerability to the point of literal consumption and an honor to the person doing the consuming.

I'm sure it can be done well! I don't doubt my writing ability to do it. But it's not for me, least not from white writers, and that's because knowing the history of it, the last thing y'all need is to act like consuming everything about me while simultaneously hating me is a romantic deal 😅 I'm cool. Not until we stop doing so psychologically in real life.

When it comes to everyone else, I mean, I would think it worked much the same. But I am one person, thus me asking the crowd.

i wanted to chip in from the perspective of a black person who is currently writing a story where a black character wants to be cannibalized

tl;dr read the delectable negro and treat the concept of cannibalism as narrative shorthand for all consuming love with the nuance and complexity a topic with such racial implications like that deserves

i think when you write something with this much historical predecent, boiling it down to just "cannibalism as a metaphor for all-consuming love" becomes a little... gauche? tone deaf? if the black character is the one consuming, that obviously has its own history of depictions of black people as savage, violent, and yes, cannibalistic, but black people as consumable is something that has equal baggage (see: The Delectable Negro, which i think should be required reading for anyone writing a black character in a story about cannibalism)

for me, i found that using consumption and cannibalism as a concept in a much more complex/nuanced way than just "to love me is to consume me completely" and having my characters being cognizant of those racial biases and histories in their own ways has given it a lot less of a bad taste in my mouth.

to give my own work as an example, cannibalism serves as a multi-tool of analogies: it represents sexual consumption, sure, but it also represents structural violence, mental illness and egodystonic thought, lack of bodily autonomy, externalization of trauma. the person who desires to be eaten does so because by choosing have something in such a final way happen to him, he feels like he has a level of autonomy over his body and its ability to be packaged and consumed that was never afforded to him as a black person.

this is a thought process that isn't rewarded by the narrative either: the person he wants to do this to him is firmly against it because cannibalism, to him, represents a lack of autonomy-- the inability to control himself and his actions due to the effects of structural violence and trauma. that conflict is what drives the story, and i find something like that way more interesting than just. you know. To Be Consumed Is To Be Loved as an uncritical observation. there's a lot of weird tension that comes with that when applied to the black body.
