The distant mention of children, and how Jennie (the husband's sister) is doing everything that the lady protagonist should be doing as a mother/lady of the house for the time period is a really effective way to contextualize the sheer loss of autonomy she had at the hands of her husband with a simple decision. Yet, in between all of this, it shows the kind of mental strenght the lady protagonist has, one that she is sadly losing every day she spends inside that yellow room.
With all of the stupid explanations about hysteria and the misogynistic notion of women being handled like simple minded creatures, no one can stop the lady protagonist from feeling things, reflecting things, writing or expressing her emotions. Even whe she makes sure to hide everything well, even if the image of herself created by her husband makes her feels guilty of this the protagonist still does it because she wants to subtextually reclaim what little autonomy she has left.
From this point, at least I'm glad that the lady protagonist is slowly going insane with the yellow wallpaper of her (metaphorical jail) bedroom when the alternative seems to be an utter sinking depression that would leave her in the hands of an actual mental asylum. That seems to be the most tragical part of this so far, how it's more engaging to see this woman unravel in yellow paper because her brain is yearning to do something in the mind numbing isolation ordered by her shit husband.

when i was a young woman on tumvlr ten years ago everybody liked american football, tigers jaw, ajj, and teen suicide. and we all had a little tin plate with a candle on it, and we needed to be careful not to let the candle go out because we needed it to read the posts. one time a mutual told me they were scared of their candle going out while their phone was charging at night. the dashboard didn't have the overhead fluorescent lights yet. and we had fan mail, and we liked that comic where the girl is a possum. and the stock market crash hadn't happened yet. i made a lot of money selling my tunblr stocks and i bought a boat. i would take the boat out to sea and lie down on the deck and go on tumbr and answer fan mail, but i had to use the candle to read the fan mail, because we didn't have lights yet. it was very dark back then, and one time i fell into the gap between two posts and twisted my ankle. and some people liked elvis depressedly, also, but i can't say that i was one of them.
i think i tend to forget how good boredom is for creativity because we're all so addicted to numbing ourselves with screens and stimulation. but standing in the shower or going for a walk with no music or just sitting in your bedroom without being allowed to touch any screens & all of a sudden i have multiple new projects to start, a solution to a months-long plot problem & 4 new original characters

World's worst wallpaper...? the yellow wallpaper narrator laments
So, since we have another entry of the Yellow Wallpaper, I have decided to read what were the treatments for "hysteria" as an illness, and it's incredible... this pseudo-scientific "being a woman" illness has been mentioned since ancient egypt.
From hypnosis, straight up pregnancy, and smelling salts the treatments for this made up illness are so bonkers that all of them showcase the misogynist dismissal for women's health to either a silly mental womanly problem, or the uterus somehow going crazy. Therefore, the "treatment" showcased in the Yellow Wallpaper falls in line with the image of hysteria in the 18th to 19th century, where it was associated with the brain as a neurological illness, which in turn made neuropsychiatrists of the time order stuff like bed rest, and avoidance of activities so the brain could not be "overstimulated".
No wonder the lady protagonist is frying her mind observing the yellow wallpaper again and again, on top of hiding her writing in fear of it being taken away, there is literally nothing for her to do! To read how the protagonist is desperately trying to convince herself that all of the "treatment" imposed on her by her husband is somehow helping, then recalling how he keeps dismissing every single opinion she has, only to switch to her obsessing over the patterns on the wallpaper because she is exhausting her talking topics it's really melancholic.
